    'Sad song'; written from the winter of late 1929 to early the following year when the composer was merely aged eighteen, lies amongst the earliest surviving dated pieces by the French composer, organist, and pianist Jehan Alain; who dedicated the work to his friend, Jean Billard (brother of one of his friends, Denise Billard).
    Published posthumously by Éditions Alphonse Leduc under the auspices of Marie-Claire and Olivier Alain (the composer's siblings) in 1989 as the eighth of his ten pieces for piano, and subsequently publicly premièred 26 January 1990 at the Mémorial de Caen.
