    I purchased the truth about golf, messaged/emailed AJ back and forth, and loved our interaction. He responded directly to me at the time, and explained the concept a bit more clear for me. He's an incredible teacher. Thankfully I no longer subscribe to any online golf instruction or concepts learned online because I bit the bullet and took full on lessons with my local Pro. The result has been a drop in handicap from a 15 in June to a 11.7 by November. I now play golf vs golf swing. With all that said, it is an absolute joy to listen to AJ speak as I love his stories and love the science behind his explanations. If anything, to me, for a good discussion, there needs to be balance, and AJ does just that. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to the next videos.

    Found AJ in 2003 after years of frustration and futility. What he says is absolutely the truth about golf. I began to have fun with golf even though it doesn't happen overnight, but the foundation was laid and everything AJ has said has proven to be true as I applied the principles he explains to my golf game.

    Thank you for interviewing AJ. I met AJ when I taught at The Golf Academy of the South and AJ taught at the San Diego Golf Academy . He is a great teacher and he knows a lot about club fitting. He is one of the nicest person you can meet. I'm looking forward to seeing your other videos with AJ.

    Thanks for getting AJ on the channel. I love his simplistic approach about the application of the tool. He was highly criticized for his approach being too simple when it’s simply the truth. If the toe doesn’t rotate the shaft would be in the middle of the club head. Take whatever swing theory you like but don’t forget the hand eye coordination aspect and hit golf shots

    Interesting take. I’ve taken physic and engineering for a while so I know all about incertia and moment arm but surprisingly I never applied it to golf. The only thing about this is speed and mass/moment arm can be interchanged. Force comes from mass times acceleration. Increasing Moment arm will make distance look effortless while speed will require more work.

      Yea I hate when people talk about physics and things that they really aren’t qualified to speak on. He knows just enough to make a person that doesn’t know about physics think he knows what he’s talking about. To be fair, I do like his philosophy on ball striking. Works well in practice

    The explanation of 'moment arm' is a revelation. I see a direct connection from AJ's straight left arm at contact (longer moment arm) to Monte's swing thought of getting his left arm 'off his chest'.

I will say when your all paralyzed from too many swing thoughts his methods and mental thoughts work very well, especially in the middle of a round when the wheels are falling off.

    I enjoyed your interview with AJ. I now understand why forward shaft lean is needed at impact. I think that you still need right wrist flexion/extension for more club head speed, so long as you don't let the club head reach the ball before the left hand.

    As a guy who has really good hand-eye coordination, meaning I was an excellent hitter in baseball, can play a mean game of ping-pong, and is a really good pool player, this makes complete sense to me. I can positively say in all those areas I don't even think about body movement. If the body needs to move, it just moves. This is so simple but complicated because it challenges about everything I have ever been taught when it comes to hitting a golf ball. Great stuff!

    Bonar is absolutely right about the wrist not firing at impact creating more power. Watching this starting around 11 minutes forward answers the question everyone asks about what the right wrist angle is at impact and should the wrist fire going into impact.

    As a physics nerd this was right up my alley. But in his examples it seemed he was always assuming the acceleration (clubhead speed) was the same whether you broke (shortened) the moment arm or not (his example of breaking at the wrist vs connection to the shoulder...also in his examples of of the bowling ball on a string). If your moment arm is longer you'll have a higher acceleration (larger arc to travel) for a given rotational constant (angular velocity). Thought experiment: think of holding a laser pointer. At the tip of your fingers where you're holding the laser and you move it side to side at 1mph (short moment arm). Now look at the wall 10' away and the laser beam is racing back and forth at 70mph (long moment arm if it was an actual connection). So the gist of all of my gobbledygook is that his method doesn't create more efficient force,
    his swing concept creates more efficient speed....which then correlates directly to the definition of force (Newton's 2nd law F=MA) Erkel...out!

    • @agenthex
      @agenthex 4 года назад

      Not only is the physics presentation in the video misleading, it also misses that the "secret" of a good swing is actually the *whipping* motion of the torso and arm, which is what maximizes that angular velocity and thereby head speed at the ball.

    I flip my hands, extend early, hit fat shots, hit high weak misses. Basically I make every mistake he talks about. I’ve been working to get my hands in front of the ball by practicing hitting low shots. This is great stuff which rings true to me. Knowing ahead of time what to do. I feel like it’s better than having debilitating swing thoughts. One of my go to shots off the tee is a low stinger with a hybrid. I tend to hit it great when I say to myself, hit it low, get your hands in front of the ball.

    Moment of inertia can be thought of as rotational inertia. E.g. a bicycle wheel that is rolling along real fast is very difficult to make it fall over, shift its plane of rotation.e. it resists rotating at a different plane/angle. That's why it's harder to ride a bike when you are moving slower,,,less rotational inertia, its easier for the wheel to tip over, change planes....less resistance to moving /spinning through a different plane, angle.
    this is why, once the backswing is done, and an angle of attack/downswing is set, it's, its very difficult to shift the plane of the downswing as the angular moment builds as the arm club shaft unit swings faster. Yet the body senses the plane is off and tries to correct during the downswing,,but its too late..and ,,,shank!

  • @Eric-zk2hu
    @Eric-zk2hu 6 лет назад

    I tried it at the driving range, it does work. After you get used to it and swing thru the ball you can hit some really solid shots. It is a lot simpler swing, like a rope or really flexible shaft extending from your upper chest to the clubhead. You have to resist the urge to "add" speed with your hands or wrists,... just swing back, shift your weight then from that point just swing the rope and clubhead all the way thru. It may seem like casting, but it isn't, casting is extending to just drop down the bottom.

      To find the maximum speed and distance then, they would need to compare this method to one in which you are generating more power through hands and wrists, and compare the two ball speeds...you can't really get a sense for which works without testing both methods side by side

      Actually I learned about the so called new ball flight laws from his DVD "A.J. reveals the TRUTH" many years ago. That the start direction of the ball flight is governed by the face orientation not the club path as previously believed by the golf teaching world for 50+ years. A.J. acquired this knowledge while working at Taylormade's lab using certain launch monitor and hi speed cam. At that time Trackman had not been born yet. I told my friends that there is flaw in the old ball flight laws and no body believed me until Trackman.

AJ's jacket was pretty 'hot' and looked a little blown out so, want to see how my TV does with that, too, knowing my iMac panel is better. Anyway, looking forward to seeing some golf vlogs with it as well. How much longer does it take to upload the 4K content? Do you have fiber at home or a fast upload pipe?

    Actually energy is the one that is conserved, so kinetic energy of the clubhead is delivered to the ball as potential energy. The more potential energy the farther your ball can in theory fly. Kinetic energy is 1/2 mass time velocity squared, which is why clubhead speed is still king. It is true though that the longer the moment arm the more clubhead speed one could in theory generate. Regardless, the sternum to the club head is one moment arm and your hands to the clubhead is another moment arm. So called power accumulators. So throwing the clubhead or releasing lag does generate more clubhead speed, but is not necessarily optimal for spin or launch. Just my thoughts...

    Brandon, from your body language, u r right in not buying to what AJ Bonar is selling. Club head speed is still the dominant factor in distance. The moment of inertia mentioned by AJ is still from club head to shoulder sockets, and the action of the wrist, adds to the club head speed. Try hitting with no wrist action..U will get a lower club head speed without wrist action. I sincerely think that AJ is misled into thinking otherwise.

    • @gensyed

      Unless your wrists perfectly line up at impact, then you are always reducing the length to your wrists. Like AJ says...trying to gain speed with your wrists will always be a timing nightmare and almost always slow down the clubhead.

    Take a look at this one Brendon. MOI matching.

    • @andyss5582
      @andyss5582 6 лет назад +1

      MOI matching is a club fitting method. It is different than the moment arm AJ talks about here. That said, I don't think what he says about the left arm plus the club makes a "bigger" moment arm and therefore a more powerful swing. The club and arm are only in line for a moment during the swing. In AJ's video series he spends a fair amount of time talking about the hands and wrists and how the wrists are the final accelerator to put speed in the clubhead.
      The closest thing I can guess as to what he is trying to say is to get the left (lead) arm off the chest. There are two hinge points in this moment arm and when the two arms are lined up give the maximum club head speed. The ball feeling "light", I contend is the center of gravity of the head is lined up with the ball, and the MOI of the club head does not factor as there is no twisting to feel around the COG of the head.
      In fact, his video series spends little to no time discussing a swing and far more about using your hands to control the tool to put the club face on the back of the ball. One of the more informative pieces is showing how the club face is in represented in your hands when you hold the club and how moving your wrists and hands affect the orientation of the club face.

    See page 146 of the acclaimed study Search for the Perfect Swing, this group of British scientists say that the clubhead is "free wheeling" at impact. There is as if there is a complete disassociation from the golfer. Speed of the clubhead whether accelerating or deceleration is paramount. The moment of inertia explanation given in the video is not supported. Clubhead speed is what governs.

    • @Spudroe
      @Spudroe 5 лет назад

      Ball speed is what governs in reality. In other words, all things being equal, you have to strike the golf ball in the sweet spot in order to transfer the energy efficiently.

    It would be interesting to see you revisit some of the ideas of old talks and lessons with instructors and compare them with other teachings and see which ones truly hold up. this is a great video but AJ seems to me to be suggesting that most amateur golf swings don't use their entire arms in the downswing. Clubhead speed will always generate more ball speed if all other things are equal right? The only situation I see this making sense in is if someone makes a swing using only their wrists while keeping their arms stationary vs a swing with the whole arm. I would be really interested to see your thoughts! Huge fan of the channel!

    • @WhoDunnit32
      @WhoDunnit32 5 лет назад

      Tennis is the perfect example of how you use the wrists, think of it like this if you want to hit a very powerful hard to return topspin shot in Tennis what do you do? do you keep your arm stiff and completely straight? and never turn the wrist over? no this would result in an iconsistent weaker shot, what he has advocated for 20 years is the wrists in all the tour pros rotate through impact just like a topspin Tennis shot, I was surprised AJ did not show you the ball behind method any any of the videos? he shows this in his original truth about golf video. it really helps, you place a ball 12 inches directly in line and behind the ball you are hitting now you take the club away without touching the ball on the way back or the way through, it dramatcially improves your ball striking, because you are forced to take the club up nice and steeply and come down on the ball nice and steeply, more than you would actually think you need to, it will dramatically improve your skills in hitting ball first then turf. it teaches you how to use the correct leverage and get the elusive ball / turf contact.

    Also, his moment of inertia discussion seems to be confusing itself with simple torque , i.e. force through distance.
    And to compare the moment length of arm to ball vs. hands to arm, only works if for the entire length of the rotation, the arm is moving at same angular rotational velocity speed as the club shaft. And it isn't. Also, force - mass x acceleration. The club needs to still be accelerating through impact to maximize the rotational force into the ball,,,yet for the top of the club face to actually travel faster than the bottom of the club face, the handle needs to be rotating forward, relative to the bottom of the club face, so the top edge moves faster than the bottom edge at impact....all the while the whole moment arm needs to be accelerating the arm/club shaft through impact. Which makes it impossible for the top edge to be traveling faster that the bottom edge of club face at impact.

I tried his methods and they do work, but like anything you still have to practice. If you have some type of physical limitation that hampers a golf swing, AJ's way is a good route to try.

    Hammering a nail is NOT a straight line deal - your lower arm is travelling in a circular route with the elbow as its center. But I get the point he is trying to make. - think LESS circular and MORE straight into the back of the ball.

    Teach and fit with Trackman daily. Distance (power) is derived from the proper combination of ball speed, launch angle and spin rate. What I find, without fail, is that if the golfer makes center contact on the clubface, ball speed is directly proportional to swing speed. Doesn't matter if the golfer is flipped and extended at impact, or holding several degrees of shaft lean. In other words, if you're hitting the center of the face, the only thing that's going to make the ball go faster (fly farther) is moving the Club at a greater rate of speed. 100% disagree with the increase mass, heavy hit theory discussed here. If a golfer wants to hit the ball farther, speed has to increase (while solid contact is maintained).

      If you flip you’re just not going to play consistently good golf. It’s not that complicated, you need shaft lean to create consistent ball first contact. The reason most amateurs suck is instructors have overcomplicated the game

      Lol physics doesnt care if you agree or not. The kinetic energy equation includes mass. If you want more kinetic energy you add mass or velocity. KE= 1/2 mv ^2
      In golf you add lbs of force into the shaft then it delivers the force into the ball

    When the ball was feeling light is cause you hit it in the center of the face, therefore getting max smash factor. Also the center of your swing is not your left shoulder, your swing rotates around your sternum via your left and right arm connection. The golf ball doesnt care how long the moment arm is. If you make square contact at same club head speed the energy transfer will be the same regardless of whether the moment is long or short. Obviously it's better to tow it rather than flip, but arguing that energy transfer differs is nonsense.

    This guy is not an engineer. He does not know what moment of arm really is. Dr Kwon is a mechanical engineer, and here is what he has said. A person’s center of mass (COM) is slightly below your belly button & is the balance point of the body. The moment arm is the distance from the force to the axis of rotation. The moment arm is the difference between the COM & the center of pressure (COP). The COP is the point where the body is producing maximum force into the ground. The more pressure you put into the lead foot on the downswing, while keeping COM behind the ball, the more clubhead speed you will create. Some people act like they know what they are talking about, but when you investigate, you find out they really do not know what they are talking about. Very sad.

    This is 100% nonsense. The ball feels lighter when you hit it out of center. Increasing your moment arm SLOWS down your speed. Speed directly translates to distance. Moment arm has nothing to do with distance.

      Not exactly the opposite of Malaska. The release Malaska does from the top is not the wrist releasing forward. He is simply tipping the club out with an inside over the top move. You can do the Malaska move and still not prematurely fire the wrist.

    The angle between 2 and 3 oclock is 15 deg. Not 30. Guy doesn't know what he's talking about. If hitting a golf ball only required a back swing of say 5 inches - the back swing of using a hammer to hit a nail - he would be out of a job.
    And the only way to create speed of the top end of face, faster than bottom edge of face, is to begin the 'roll over' motion at hte very last moment. This is flipping the club face. Not a good move.

    • @seth1455
      @seth1455 4 года назад

      AJ is correct, it is 30 degrees
      360 degree circle divided by 60 minutes on a clock face equates to every minute on the clock face is 6 degrees.
      5 minutes between the clock face 2 and 3 ..... 5 x 6 degrees is 30

    Sorry but this is classic case of misunderstanding and misuse of basic physics. You don't transfer the moment arm to the ball. Club head speed and centre contact will translate to ball speed. Optimised with the best launch angle and backspin to match the speed, you will achieve the most distance. Ball doesn't care about the moment arm of the club or the person swinging the club.

  • @benpennington7532

    A sweet man, but this is nonsense. Moment of inertia applies to rigid objects. He seems to have ignored the flexible face, shaft, wrist and floppy arm. With his argument it follows that one could use a very heavy head on the driver, increasing the MOI and therefore the ball speed!
