Small talk is always a waste of time.
Americans love small talk. One moment they might be discussing work, and the next, they’ll shift to talking about movies, cars, or vacations. Of course, this doesn’t happen during business meetings or official visits, which are serious and focused. However, it’s common for people from other departments to drop by to discuss something, and conversations often drift to other topics.
My mother stood with her arms across her chest.
If my mother did that, it meant she was upset. I could tell she was thinking hard and maybe frustrated. When she stood like that and it wasn't directed at me, I would back away, just in case she lashed out.
