Thank you so much for sharing this! I'm an ICU RN of 3 years and this is something I can't prepare for without an expert showing me in detail. I feel much more prepared after seeing you perform an "emergency" trach change and taking notes. I have well-written protocols provided to me at work, but without actually seeing someone do it, it's hard to imagine how the process goes. You made it seem very simple, but I know this is life saving information. Thanks again!
Wonder Woman! Thank you and wow! Grateful for the time and effort made to put together this video, and for the skill you have developed with your own experience ❤
You're so brave and amazing!!!😍😍. What's the best advise/tip you can give to a nurse who is afraid of changing one? She always thinks the new trach will get stucked entering the hole and the toddler won't be able to breathe😞😞how much time will you have before someone becomes in respiratory distress if unable to exchange??
Hello. The best advice is to stay calm. If a person panics, mistakes will be made. Set-up everything before getting the toddler involved. Lay the toddler on his back to do the trach exchange. If the trach gets suck, wiggle the trach tube back and forth and apply gentle pressure. If the trach tube will not go in, withdraw the trach tube. Attempt a second time to insert the trach tube. If the trach tube will not go in, have another trach tube one size smaller available. Try inserting the smaller trach tube. If the trach tube will not slide into place, withdraw the trach tube and try re-inserting the trach tube. If the toddler is struggling to breathe, ventilate with an Ambu bag, placing the mask over the toddler's mouth. If the trach tube will not go in, go to the nearest emergency department to have them exchange the trach tube.
