  • Keir Starmer promised to "root out 14 years of Tory rot" as he defended the decision to means test the winter fuel payment in a speech on Tuesday.
James O'Brien said: "That was a boring speech, by a boring man, dealing with the boring business of getting Britain back on its feet, and if you don't like that, you don't like Britain."
He is later joined by Natasha Clark to discuss the Labour leader's pledges further.

Starmer‘s honeymoon has been over, not even a month into his premiership to say it’s going to be over. It’s over it’s gone. He is a poor prime minister. I’ve said it before I said again, Starmer is not the man to run this country. We all know who he is, and he would galvanise it, and it is not anything to do with reform because they are equally as bad, so I’ll leave it to the people to work it out

All of these economic ills were pretty much public knowledge and the IFS made that clear. The Labour Party didn’t need to sign up to Tory fiscal rules and it is a political choice as to whether the pain is dished out on the poor or the rich. Starmer has proven he is no different on economic policy at least to Cameron and Clegg. When will James stop uncritically defending Starmer as anything other than continuity old school Tories

Yet the service is awful... So what gives?
The answer is that the money is being spent _badly_ in the wrong places, on the wrong things.

We need to redistribute some of the wealth from the owning class back to the working class, everything else is just tinkering around the edges of an unequal nation.

    - The extra £4.7 billion he mentioned was going to be spent on capital investment projects (hospitals, rail, etc). This is almost always borrowed from "new" money via the BoE. Labour has cut these projects.
    - No mention of renters.
    - Says "the broadest shoulders" but only mentions nondoms and fines for water companies. No mention of wealth taxes for the ultra rich or big business.
This was 20 minutes of nothing from Keir (with the unsaid part being what you have to listen to). I'll hold out hope he's avoiding mentioning my third point before the budget for fear of spooking the markets and causing a reaction but that hope is already running on fumes. Them going straight for the pensioners because they can't cut anything else off UC/benefits claimants has given a clear indication of where they're going with this.

You sound like a right expert!! Do you really want him to stand their and tell you what taxes are going up, do you really expect that? I hope its a wealth tax, and its a massive surprise that catches them all out.. because its the only thing they can really do and must do.

@@Aegmog By "depression and anxiety" benefits I assume you mean ESA/PIP? PIP is a vital tool in ensuring that those who are so ill/have conditions (mental or physical) that means they can't work can survive (mobility, attending appointments, needed extras such as above-average energy reliance or equipment, etc).
If you are clinically depressed, you should be applying for those benefits if your depression is so debilitating that you're unable to reliably attain or hold down a job. That is one of the many reasons why PIP exists. Just like with physical, mental health conditions have a large variable degree of effects on individuals. Some are on the "lesser" end and able to continue on as normal (albeit with additional struggles) and some are so severe that they can't get out of bed in the morning.
I certainly wouldn't want that taken away from people nor do I think they should have taken away the winter fuel payment. There's other avenues to accrue that money - governments just aren't willing to do it.

more taxes for the "ultra rich'..there are not that many left in Britain.. they are fleeing to greener pastures... and they are taking their skills with them.. so, what are you going to do next? Why not cut taxes for them and lure investment back into the country..
