Are John Woo's newer movies bad? What do you think the last good movie he produced was. I've only watched hard boiled and I really loved it and wanted more but now I'm not sure if this was just lightning in a bottle.

The gunplay in this film is something that has to be seen. Even when this film was released back in 1992, it was way ahead of it's time. In today's world this would still be a serious contender for one of the best action films of it's kind.

Ironically, the sequel to Hard Boiled came in the form of a game that was considered to be a clone of the max payne games. It's called John Woo's Stranglehold and it's an amazing game with an awesome storyline.

Chow Yun-Fat is one of the greatest action stars ever. His style of acting keeps the audience engaged. These type of action movies are hard to come across nowadays. Hopefully, in the future there will be more directors who are nostalgic enough to give us new movies with high-grade action.

In trailers, you don't need dialogue to get people interested. All you need is lots of explosions and gun fights to get people interested. Hey it works... Ok maybe not for Michael Bay, but it works with John Woo!!!
That's because unlike Bay, Woo has an imagination.
F-ckyou Gogledeckheads And Woo pays attention to the geography of a scene. In Bay's movies I'm always confused because there isn't enough effort on choreography.

Best Action Flick Ever Made
When I saw this film, sometime in 1993 or 1994 at an art house theater in LA it changed my whole expectation of what an action movie could be and should be, forever.

Superheroes belongs to TV animation and comics in the 90s, and I'm glad they did.

No dialogue whatsoever!
The teahouse shootout is one of the coolest action sequences ever. It is a lot better than anything you saw in the Matrix or Face Off. I also loved the shootout at the hospital especially the part where Chow Yun Fat is carrying the baby around.
And that's just how the movie starts :O
Seriously, it's not even funny anymore how Hollywood gunfights (except the 1995 Heat movie) are significantly inferior to the ones in Hard Boiled. Hard Boiled is such an amazing adrenaline-fueled action movie.

There's plenty of good "Hollywood" action movies, they're mainly just not done by big studios anymore, with rare exception. Dredd is a good example.

I think one of the reasons this film is so popular is because it relates the tale of "to destroy them, you must become them". It's the same motivation behind Clint Eastwood, John Wayne and countless other Western "heroes"; if they play dirty you play dirtier and bloodier.
I love when a movie has so much going on that you can show a lot in the trailer without showing everything.
We need more trailers like this. It shows audiences what to expect without all the misleading editing. Just action and characters.

If you were fortunate to watch this on the cinema at the time of release, I can honestly tell you "It was amazing". Up until this day, Hong Kong have always made the most creative, strange, exciting, unbelievable films of any era. The gun play films are unequalled. You only have to watch "The Killer". The martial arts catalogue is also massive, along with all the ghost/vampire type movies. Hong Kong has many many hidden treasures, you just have to make time for the journey because trust me, its deep. Old school Hong Kong movies for life.
I started this journey years back, still in it. Though I've covered all the major names!

Loved this movie...John Woo was free to direct the way he wanted...and glad they did not spill any beans with the trailer...the storyline is really good.
This movie is on par with Die Hard, Terminator 2, The Killer, Lethal Weapon and other action film greats in my book, i saw this 20 years ago in middle school after hearing about it in the movie magazines, movie books, Siskel and Ebert and more and rent it with The Killer, i loved it and became a favorite of mine.

The Killer is John Woo's masterpiece but Hard Boiled is probably his best film and the culmination of his signature "gun-fu" choreography. I also love A Better Tomorrow but the gun fights are very raw and unpolished in that film.
Eric Rhodes I describe A Better Tomorrow as "a soap opera made for guys with some cool gunfights." The scene where chow yun fat speeds to the rescue on his boat and pulls out that rocket launcher never fails to get cheers.
