Mine has been trouble free for 94,643 miles as of today. Bought it with 9,000 miles on it in March of 2015. Just a great, trouble free, reliable fun ride. No complaints at all.
Wow Vijay, that's a great record for longevity. When I was researching the bike I saw the kind of mileage Nick Sanders was doing and that sold me on it. Glad you've had a similar experience. I came off a 110,000 mile VFR with equally good reliability so my expectations are high.
In all fairness next to my VStrom that I gave to my nephew to learn on that had 118,000 miles on it Yamaha has consistently been my most trouble free bike. My FJR went 143,000 when a Pot Hole and I had a major disagreement; resulting in it becoming my former FJR. But only repair I did was my radiator which had a big rock chip hit and I decided to replace rather than attempt to repair., But no oil leaks, coolant leaks ietc. nothing. My FJ-09 now has 53,500 trouble free miles. I can see why Consumer Reports continuously ranks it as the most dependable motorcycle.
Nice job on the video. I have had my 2015 S10 ES for about two years now, getting close to 20K miles. I just got back from a 12K ride to Alaska and back and the bike did great, no mechanical issue at all. The S10 does not have all the bells and whistles of the BMWs or the power of the Ducatis or KTMs, but it has more than enough power and torque to do the job. It is a solid, reliable, pack mule. Which is exactly what I wanted.

I've been encouraged by a couple of Tenere riders who have really put the bike through its paces: Nick Sanders and Paul Pelland, who have each put tens of thousands of miles on their Teneres during long distance, record setting rides with minimal maintenance and few problems.

Another great video. Love my Tenere ! I use the moose skid plate and it provides awesome coverage. I found when changing the oil if you start with the minimum amount ,run it until warm and let cool over night you can top it off the next day and the level in the middle of the sight glass works best. I have never had a oil venting issue that way. Also make sure you use actual motorcycle oil filters and not ones that were for an auto that happen to cross over and fit the Tenere. It's amazing the bad quality control of auto filters and I have seen oring leaks on those auto filters in many cases. (I have 30 years service experience in the motocycle industry) Great job with your channel.

I had the same overfilling issue on a m/c that I had many years ago. Before draining the oil, the level was right on the mark. I measured the volume after draining the crankcase and from the filter, which I had cut open to check for metal. I found that the total volume was several ounces short of factory spec. With the help of a friend, we tipped the bike way over to the right and left and an additional 5-6 ounces came out. Obviously some oil was trapped somewhere. That explained the overfilling and why the oil seemed to get slightly dirty right away. The S10 sounds like a great adventure bike! Well presented video. 👍

Great review, you've gained another follower. I was looking at the Tiger 1200 XCA, but the reliability and low maintenance of the Tenere has made me forget about the Tiger. Valves every 42000km...thats pretty good.
Nice video, really nice, there is only one thing - XT1200Z first edition was announced in 2010. So it was for the BMW R1200GS LC (K50). BMW probably has now some more ps (XT - 112; GS - 125), more technicals features, more technicals issues, some more kg and more expensive than before! ))) About S10 everything, that you say is true. I have already 30 000 km with and without the passenger, in Italien summer and German autumn and nothing, only standard service every 10 000 km. You make a good job! Thank you.
Nice bike, I'm thinking about getting one. I ride a Goldwing now. I live in the country, a lot of nice backroads and trails here. I don't use the Goldwing for touring anymore. I think this would be a good bike for me. Good video.

I haven't ridden the Africa Twin but I would bet it's a better ride in the dirt. I've seen them at bike shows and they look significantly lighter than the Tenere. For Africa Twin money you can get a great used Tenere that is favored for road touring or you could get a new A Twin for the dirt and light touring.

I have had my s10 now for 12 weeks and have put almost 6000 miles on it including two big trips (Scotland and Spain) I am loving this bike and so is my pillion who has done the trips with me. Just routine service and a rear tyre with no issues. For a big heavy tractor it moves quicker than I expected it to. I spoke to many people before I made my purchase and all that have owned an s10 love them. I got the yam and not a gs because of the reliability and cost issues of a BMW also to be different as there are too many gs bike out there. Keep up with the reviews.

2 yrs of ownership and I'm still loving my s10 haven't seen anything else that I would honestly want to replace it with it just gets on with it my friend has a 2015 bmw r1200 gs and trust me on closer examination the bmws build quality is shocking plus he's had reliability issues if people can overcome the snobbery thing the s10 doesn't disappoint 👍

I echo many of your sentiments from the value of learning from the experience of others like our brother from "Living Off the Slab" to yourself given my own coincidental ownership of a 2013 KLR (24,000 km) and a 2015 S10 ES (15,000 km). When I bought the S10 I sat on a number of GS's and was sorely tempted. But the reality up here in British Columbia at the time was that the BMW would have cost me $10,000 CA more than the S10. And as well, I stumbled across a consumer reliability report which placed BMW (in general) at #4 and Yamaha at #1. I have no doubt about the quality and desirability of the GS but $10 K buys a lot of ....whatever....! So far, no grief whatsoever and the simpler routine tasks of maintenance are a breeze. I am hoping that you would kindly respond to one question that nags me, at the risk of revealing what I consider to be one of the very few imperfections of our Canadian S10's: Does your US S10 have the ability to switch back and forth from MPH to KM's? thanks for the kind words Rob! $10,000 CA or US is way too much price differential with the BMW. I don't blame you at all. I have a number of friends with BMW GS bikes and they have been trouble free for them, but I can't get over the price difference. Yes, the US bikes can switch between MPH & KM's, though it's not easy. You have to hold the menu switch down for 2 seconds to enter the setting mode. Then use the select switch to move down to "Units." Push "Menu" and KM or Mile will flash. You can use the select switch to pick which one you want and push Menu again to save it. I would imagine the Canadian bikes would have the same system. Do you still ride the KLR much? I felt there was too much overlap with the Tenere.

Thanks for sharing. Just a comment on oil fill. I have had engines in the past that were very difficult to judge the levels during fills. So now I get measure containers for each application. I bring the old oil up to temp ... let it drain till it's only a few drops per minute left in the case. The if it's 900ml capacity for example, I'll put in a measured 850ml's then tickle up to full level. It end's up being quite a quick and certainly accurate method. I hope this is of some help to you. I got my own kitchen liter/quart pyrex. then when buying the gallon (don't quote me, 3.78L) , pour off the .3L into the pyrex and then pour the exact 3.5L (close enough) into my bike, same for my wife's.
Own a 2013 S10 for the past 5yrs.No issues at all. Easiest bike to access plugs, air box, battery without unscrewing alot of panels/screws compared to other similar adv bikes.
Happy trails.com has pictures of the mounting system ..all are bike make model and year specific..but panniers are universal mount so if I want to take the boxes off the super tenere and place them on the klr there is only the 4 bolts and the panniers bolt right to the system on the klr
yes the main mounting racks stay attached but the are not that bad,comparable to any other pannier mounting system..and the panniers are easily remover buy removing two top bolts and loosening the two lower bolts...takes less than 5 minutes for both...
I recently took a 2017 Super T for a test drive during our local Yamaha demo ride day, I was very excited to try it, it looked to be the perfect bike, but I was pretty disappointed, I found it to have a pretty long throw for its shifting, which meant a lot of false neutrals. the route of the demo ride was pretty lack luster, and the group got split up which meant the ride pretty much sucked as the guy leading the portion of the group that i was in got nervous and kept everyone going pretty slow. I am not writing the bike off, and I do plan on giving it another test ride someday to see how it truly performs, but i do know i was not a fan of the long shift throw (but to be fair to the bike, my daily driver is a sport bike, so the long shift is probably something I am just not used to) the one great thing I did notice was how smooth the power delivery was, I was very nervous jumping on a 1200cc bike for the first time, but it was very easy to control the throttle response.
That's a tough test ride route they put you on. I've found the bike really excels at higher speed travel as well as twisty roads and packed gravel/dirt. I hope you get a chance to really stretch the throttle next time. I came off a VFR800 and haven't noticed the shifting being that long of a throw. I just don't have false neutrals with it. I would think you would notice the bike's power/weight ratio is down compared to a sport bike. It doesn't have the power of its rivals and it's heavier. That's something I do notice. I'm wondering if something like a Multistrada or KTM Adventure would be more up your alley. They are lighter, more powerful and have gobs of character to them. Christopher Leslie went from busa's and previous bike was a b king so the tenere was my first adventure bike.Have it now 10months or so and love it gear changes you will get used too and they wont bother you at all.probably you just needed to ride it a bit harder that day but i understand you couldn't because of the circumstances.A great bike really.
Thanks for welcoming questions. Is it easy to loft the front wheel over small obstacles? My old and trusty R100GS was an old hand at clutchless wheelies from walking speeds and I loved that easy ability. Low speed torque is beautiful.
That Oil Level thing is pretty common. My FJ-09 does the same thing. I do the oil change meticulously, making sure it is only 2/3 up the window. Go for a ride and sure enough the level shows as though it is overfilled. It's not though... I put it on the sidestand, have someone lean the bike upright and can see how the level is just barely at the top of the window.
My '03 Kawa Voyager is one of those type of bikes where the Guru's say, ignore the sight glass. With it's 2 drain bolts and large canister filter hole that is exposed when you pull it out to change it, it drains well. Then exactly 3.5L back in. As long as no leaks, you just ride it till next change (or if smoking). Actually, other than a road debris punching a crack into my aluminum oil case 4 years ago (replaced with a good used one), no engine problems at all in 81k miles. They say these hydraulic lifted, water cooled, engines will go 300k. Anyway, I think you in a later video mention the amount to add then never mind unless no oil in the sight window (???). Cool video. I'm looking to buy an adventure bike this year and your comments and videos about the Tenere are very helpful. I'm just worried about the seat height . I'm 5'10 , so not short but I want to feel stable when I come to a halt! How do you feel about this as I like the Tenere the best out of the adventure bikes. thanks , Tom.
Hi Tom, thanks for the comment. I'm only 5'8" and I can flat foot the Tenere without problem. There's a seat adjustment bracket on the frame so you can move the seat to a high or low amount. I always forget about that in my videos.
I lowered mine with lowering links from Soupie’s. They are adjustable and I lowered it about 1 1/2-2 inches Just enough to feel more comfortable.Also lowered the front by sliding the fork tubes up into the triple clamps as far as they would go. It’s been like this for 6 years now with no problems.
Of all the reviews/comments on the super 10, The most common "issue" was the lack of quality/construction of the panniers. The super 10. from Yamaha seems to have the best owner's review for reliability. This seems to be over a few model years as well so take it for what it's worth.
A RUclips reviewer said the ST has 'stability issues' at speeds in excess of 80m/h. He also said he's using some sort of 50/50 tire (which I presume is dirt/road compound and tread) and feels this could have something to do with it. What has your experience been in this respect? How fast have you ridden/cruised on the Tenere? What tires do you use? (as appear in this video). Thanks so much
I'm using the Mitas E-07 Dakar's, which are a 50/50 tire. I've felt those stability issues too. Not sure what to call it. Yesterday I had the bike up to 100 mph and while I didn't feel unsafe, the bike didn't seem as planted and smooth as a sport bike with street tires. I think the tires have something to do it with. With those tires the Tenere seems happiest at about 75 mph. Thanks for the question Daniel!
We don't have lane splitting here in the Northeast. But with the side cases I probably wouldn't. I did lane splitting in CA years ago with a VFR with hard cases and it was a close fit.
hi just wanna ask on what is your front fork suspension set up to maybe get a plusher ride but not too much as to sacrifice bike performance. i.e. spring preload, compression and rebound damping. thanks
I literally went to the owners manual and put each setting as it was described in there. I'm about 170 lbs, which is close to the rider weight they calibrate it for. I haven't had any issues. I just set it there and forgot about it.
I have a quick question. You have the mita’s e07 Dakars on your bike. I have the same. Have you had any problems with the front tire vibrating enough to cause your had to get numb? I am wondering if I have thrown a weight ? Would you mind giving me your input? thanks. Love this bike
Hi Jim, sorry for the delay in answering your question. No, I haven't had that issue with the Mitas. In fact I was riding the bike most of the day yesterday and the e-07's felt like sport-touring tires after a while. Very smooth. I'm sorry you're having that issue. It might we worth looking to see if it's balanced...but I don't balance the tires either. Most of my riding is slower speed and it didn't feel as necessary to me.
It's really hard to get all the old oil out of a bike when you change it. That's why I've seen a LOT of bikes with too much oil in them. Don't just put in what the bike says it can hold. Put in a quart less and then see where you are. I'm 6' tall and I'm on my toes with most of these adventure bikes when I come to a stop. I understand you need clearance, but it seems like you would want your feet to touch easily in an "off road" environment.
I agree with you about the ground clearance. For probably 95% of the situations you ride in you don't need all that ground clearance, yet we sometimes suffer with excessive seat height 100% of the time. I need to try putting a lot less oil into the Tenere when I change it.
The S10 is very comfortable for a passenger...it has plenty of power to handle the extra weight even when fully loaded with luggage...may be best to ride in touring mode to give smoother ride for passenger...ES model very good to quickly change suspension depending on passenger cargo combinations
As for hard cases nobody sells them so they endure fall, but had you installed original yamaha engine guard, you'd probably avoid damage - they don't look like much but I had fall aroud 30 kmph and don't even have a scratch on side cases.
The altrider guards on the bike look a lot more robust than the factory Yamaha ones. I'm not sure how you could avoid having the side case strike the ground when the bike goes over.
Just had my good old TDM stolen (God knows why!) and my local dealer has a s10 in black 15 plate, all the bells n whistles with 39k on the clock. One owner and has fsh looks good. Selling at just under £8k GB. Do you think mileage high or would you anticipate the bikes reliability would mean I should get it before it goes. Great vid, by the way.
My Tenere has about 18,000 miles on it now, so that's pretty low to compare. So far no problems at all. Never been to the shop. The only thing I would consider on that bike is if the valves have been inspected or adjusted yet. That would be my only consideration. There are a number of high mileage riders who have used Tenere's with perfect reliability: Nick Sanders & Long Haul Paul. Check them out. The bikes are very solid. I would expect mine to go to 100,000 miles, as my last bike did (Honda VFR).
I think the oil leak was caused by using an automotive filter. It's odd because I've used them for years on other bikes without trouble. Once I switched back to a factory filter it was fine. Great bike for camping. With the factory bags I can pack everything I need and no one can tell I'm fully loaded for the road.
It's really a shame that they stopped making the E07-Dakars....I have one left to throw on the rear once I wear out the one that's on the bike. I like it paired with the Shinko 804 on the front.
@@AdventuresWithMe00 There may be a few left (Revzilla doesn't have any rears for our Super Tenere's anymore). It's been superceeded but the Dakar "plus". Completely different tire. If you can find an original Dakar rear in the proper size, I'd snag it an shelve it!
Does your tenere get pretty buzzy in the handle bars, seat, pegs and pretty much all over (blurry mirrors as well from the vibrations) at about 5000 rpm and up. Asking bc my 2014 does. Thanks
I don't get this obsession with riding on dirt roads, all we had was dirt roads for long enough, I'm glad to see the tarmac!! I'd take a super ten anyday over that troublesome German tractor the GS.
I think there is something very cool about riding dirt roads and exploring places that are off the beaten path. Life moves a lot slower on the dirt roads.
This is a heavy and tall bike. How "technical" terrain have you ridden with it? Is there a big difference in handling to XT660Z Tenere when riding rocky paths with slow speed? Dropping the bike can be a nightmare?
I have a video of me crashing (more like it slid out at 12 mph) the Tenere in a pretty slick, muddy area. It's not the bike's strength. It will be happy all day on groomed dirt/gravel roads. I sometimes take it on unimproved dirt roads, but only if I know they are relatively flat and smooth. I imagine there would be a big difference with an XT660Z. If you are looking to ride rough or rocky terrain, that would be a much better choice for you.
Unfortunately, I think it would be too tall. Even with the lower seat you'd have to lower the bike several more inches and I'm not sure how that's possible. I wish manufacturers could come up with better ways for the ADV bikes to fit people of all sizes.
from the Yamaha web site: "has an 1830 cubic inch capacity capable of storing a full-face helmet." It definitely holds a full face helmet, but not much else.
Maybe you explain that, but I just heard you say that Yamaha says "NOT" to have all three of their bags on at the same time????? what left bag off, with top and right on. Or top off so you can have both side cases????? Sorry, either that is a lawyer thing, but would be a deal breaker for me. How do you adventure and meet their requirements?
Yamaha continues to say on their website that all three bags shouldn't be used at the same time because of the risk of overloading. I use all three bags pretty frequently (dirt & street) and have never had an issue with instability. I try to keep the top case light so that most of the weight stays low. I think Yamaha's warning is just a lawyer thing.

It's a 2014, first year of the redesign. I bought it used in March 2015 for $10,800. It only had 700 miles on it and already had all of the farkles that you see in the video (about $2500 worth by my count). Yes, that windshield lip was already on it. I think it would compare nicely to a VStrom 1000. The shaft drive is a nice change for me.
I did tighten it up and thought that would help, but it kept leaking. I changed the filter from an automotive one to a Yamaha one and it stopped leaking. I have used automotive filters for years with no issues, so not sure what the cause of this one was.
K&N is my favorite for all my vehicles. Of course, i was quoted $32 + tax at a shop here in Panama, but I am shipping one down from US for about $7 plus a few $'s for shipping. I use the reusable air filters also in all my vehicles as well. Of course, Arizona and New Mexico are dusty places.
@@AdventuresWithMe00 The manufacturers making auto oil filters changed to a convex design. This is a common problem that, as you mentioned, you solved using a concave designed filter.

I got a klr with 28K miles and would like to upgrade to a super10 for my first South America trip in a few years. I found a 2012 at $6400 with all the farkles I need but has 71K miles. Would that be a good deal?
that seems about as cheap as you can get a Tenere for. That's more like KLR money. I guess it depends on your budget. I think for a few thousand more you could get a 2014+ that, to me, is a nice improvement over the first generation. You'll get a smoother power delivery and electronic cruise control. 71,000 miles is high for most people, but I think it's actually okay. My previous bike, a Honda VFR, had 110,000 miles on it when I sold it and it was still running well. This seems like a pretty good deal, 50% off or more off retail. Thanks for the comment!
Thank you very much for the reply. I appreciate your insight on the 2014+ models. I kind of find the 71K miles a bit high, since i would be adding about 45k miles. I still got about 4 more years to work hard and save up to travel for a year. Hopefully by then, the 2014+ super10's will be more budget friendly. Looking at all your Super10 videos, keep up the great work!
Nice video. Why would Yamaha say "not to use all three bags at the same time" I don't get that. I would think Yamaha would design their bags (or any bag manufacturer) with the intention that at some point the bike is going to be dropped in an off pavement situation and would (try) build for that.
Those are good points John. I'm not sure what Yamaha was thinking. The legal department may have been behind the "don't use all three bags at once" recommendation. But I've done it many times and never had an issue. I do wish the factory side cases were engineered better. I've tipped a few bikes with side cases and not seen a break that dramatic, especially in a first gear tip over.
A side note about the happy trails panniers, they will protect your bike and you in case of a drop or tip over..I learned this the usual way,,kicked up to put side stand up in a parking lot right foot slipped on wet surface of pavement over I went with bike running, side box caught the bike,able to get off the bike super easy,and fast made picking it back up super easy and no damage to me (leg) or bike and box was also unharmed, not even a scratch..
that's good. you know the knock on the hard panniers is people say you can break a bone in your leg if you fall since the bags don't give. IDK. Soft luggage is a bit of a compromise in practicality for me.
perhaps,but if your leg end up under the panniers you would probably end up breaking something anyway. we can justify anything we want by telling ourselves this is why i like or dont like something,or this might happen if you do this or that. but truth is you dont know until it happens..then its a mute point because you know at that point exactly what will happen...
I have been using Shell Rotella-T 15W-40 for about 15 years now with no issues. I had over 100,000 miles on my previous bike. But oil is a very personal thing. I would never say you must or should use a particular brand.
It was somehow related to the oil filter. I used an automotive filter. I switched to a Yamaha filter and no more leaks. I have used automotive filters for years without a problem. Not sure what happened here. Yes, I still have the bike. I only put about 4,000 miles on it this year. It's currently in hibernation.
I don’t even notice them. I use the front brake only most of the time, and also the back when I need to stop quickly. I also use the rear only when I’m going slow, parking lots and such.
I'm not entirely sure what caused the leak, but once I replaced the oil filter with a genuine Yamaha model it stopped. I don't know if it was a compromised seal or something about the Bosch filter. I've used Bosch filters for many years on my VFR and never had any issues.
AdventureswithMe I live in Thailand about 3 months out of the year. Every smallish town has a Yamaha and Honda dealer. The only BMW and KTM dealers are in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Two huge cities.
I'm 5'8" with a 30" inseam. I don't have any issues getting my feet down with the seat in the low position. I think you could still do it fairly comfortably if you were a bit shorter.
low position is when you remove that four legged plastic part under the seat which holds the seat inch or two higher ? Or there is more to lowering the seat?
It might seem that the gauge cluster is further away, but I think it's also higher than on many street bikes. You don't have to look down too much to glance at it. I've never thought there was an issue being able to read the display quickly. I think Yamaha did a good job with it. I'm 5'8" and don't have any issues flat-footing the bike at a stop. The seat is at the lower setting. At 5'5" you will probably have to do some balancing to make it work. It's certainly a lot heavier than any dirt bike, but it's well balanced too.
2015 Super 10 ZE 30k km with no probs..just flashed the ecu to release the beast,instant throttle response now..big difference to std..will not part with this machine.

Dont buy the factory bags they are straight junk and if you drop it like in this video the plastic parts will break. The tires are not needed and like he said he did regular dirt/ grave roads which it wont make a difference loaded on 50/50 especial since your mostly on roads. On top of that hes got oil leak on a new bike which he thinks might be from putting to much oil. Which it is not if you over fill the oil it will clog your air filter. What is possible is that the oil filter is starting to come loose and the dirt/oil that has formed has helped to hold it in place. This is a great bike and it sucks is the miss information is being spread by this channel and living off the slab on what is need to make this a great bike.
I am starting to agree, even for road bikes. Even in the US you can have pothole and other debris that gets on the tarmac that will ruin you day. Here in Panama, I often see 4 inch and larger rocks just sitting on the road. That and potholes that if you don't see it will swallow a 17" tire. Just saying, that the price of a skid plate is much less than a cracked motor or most other parts on these bikes. (I have even seen a couple of times, a Brahma bull running down the road with the farmer chasing it, on a main highway (oh, if only there had been somewhere to stop for a camera).
I have an XT 660x and have been agonising over getting a large capacity tourer for mainland European trips. BMW =too expensive and technical. Kawasaki= versys=4 cylinders, v strom=ugly stick, Italian=.......... Eh, Italian, KTM 990= almost perfect and Honda=perfect but soulless. I think I'll be sticking with Yamaha as I love my supermoto but would like to hang on to my fillings. 😆
Yamaha beats GS hands down. Reliability for starters ,no use having a bike with the bells and whistles while you look at it from the breakdown vehicle.

Mine has been trouble free for 94,643 miles as of today. Bought it with 9,000 miles on it in March of 2015. Just a great, trouble free, reliable fun ride. No complaints at all.
Wow Vijay, that's a great record for longevity. When I was researching the bike I saw the kind of mileage Nick Sanders was doing and that sold me on it. Glad you've had a similar experience. I came off a 110,000 mile VFR with equally good reliability so my expectations are high.
In all fairness next to my VStrom that I gave to my nephew to learn on that had 118,000 miles on it Yamaha has consistently been my most trouble free bike. My FJR went 143,000 when a Pot Hole and I had a major disagreement; resulting in it becoming my former FJR. But only repair I did was my radiator which had a big rock chip hit and I decided to replace rather than attempt to repair., But no oil leaks, coolant leaks ietc. nothing. My FJ-09 now has 53,500 trouble free miles. I can see why Consumer Reports continuously ranks it as the most dependable motorcycle.

Nice job on the video. I have had my 2015 S10 ES for about two years now, getting close to 20K miles. I just got back from a 12K ride to Alaska and back and the bike did great, no mechanical issue at all. The S10 does not have all the bells and whistles of the BMWs or the power of the Ducatis or KTMs, but it has more than enough power and torque to do the job. It is a solid, reliable, pack mule. Which is exactly what I wanted.

I've been encouraged by a couple of Tenere riders who have really put the bike through its paces: Nick Sanders and Paul Pelland, who have each put tens of thousands of miles on their Teneres during long distance, record setting rides with minimal maintenance and few problems.

Another great video. Love my Tenere ! I use the moose skid plate and it provides awesome coverage. I found when changing the oil if you start with the minimum amount ,run it until warm and let cool over night you can top it off the next day and the level in the middle of the sight glass works best. I have never had a oil venting issue that way. Also make sure you use actual motorcycle oil filters and not ones that were for an auto that happen to cross over and fit the Tenere. It's amazing the bad quality control of auto filters and I have seen oring leaks on those auto filters in many cases. (I have 30 years service experience in the motocycle industry) Great job with your channel.

I had the same overfilling issue on a m/c that I had many years ago. Before draining the oil, the level was right on the mark. I measured the volume after draining the crankcase and from the filter, which I had cut open to check for metal. I found that the total volume was several ounces short of factory spec. With the help of a friend, we tipped the bike way over to the right and left and an additional 5-6 ounces came out. Obviously some oil was trapped somewhere. That explained the overfilling and why the oil seemed to get slightly dirty right away. The S10 sounds like a great adventure bike! Well presented video. 👍

I always drain my oil with the bike on the sidestand . Since the drain is on the left side it seems to drain more oil out that way.

Great review, you've gained another follower. I was looking at the Tiger 1200 XCA, but the reliability and low maintenance of the Tenere has made me forget about the Tiger. Valves every 42000km...thats pretty good.
I think you'll be happy with it. Mine has not required anything other than routine maintenance. I'm getting near the valve inspection interval now.

Nice video, really nice, there is only one thing - XT1200Z first edition was announced in 2010. So it was for the BMW R1200GS LC (K50). BMW probably has now some more ps (XT - 112; GS - 125), more technicals features, more technicals issues, some more kg and more expensive than before! )))
About S10 everything, that you say is true. I have already 30 000 km with and without the passenger, in Italien summer and German autumn and nothing, only standard service every 10 000 km.

I haven't ridden the Africa Twin but I would bet it's a better ride in the dirt. I've seen them at bike shows and they look significantly lighter than the Tenere. For Africa Twin money you can get a great used Tenere that is favored for road touring or you could get a new A Twin for the dirt and light touring.

I have had my s10 now for 12 weeks and have put almost 6000 miles on it including two big trips (Scotland and Spain) I am loving this bike and so is my pillion who has done the trips with me. Just routine service and a rear tyre with no issues. For a big heavy tractor it moves quicker than I expected it to. I spoke to many people before I made my purchase and all that have owned an s10 love them. I got the yam and not a gs because of the reliability and cost issues of a BMW also to be different as there are too many gs bike out there. Keep up with the reviews.

2 yrs of ownership and I'm still loving my s10 haven't seen anything else that I would honestly want to replace it with it just gets on with it my friend has a 2015 bmw r1200 gs and trust me on closer examination the bmws build quality is shocking plus he's had reliability issues if people can overcome the snobbery thing the s10 doesn't disappoint 👍

I echo many of your sentiments from the value of learning from the experience of others like our brother from "Living Off the Slab" to yourself given my own coincidental ownership of a 2013 KLR (24,000 km) and a 2015 S10 ES (15,000 km). When I bought the S10 I sat on a number of GS's and was sorely tempted. But the reality up here in British Columbia at the time was that the BMW would have cost me $10,000 CA more than the S10. And as well, I stumbled across a consumer reliability report which placed BMW (in general) at #4 and Yamaha at #1. I have no doubt about the quality and desirability of the GS but $10 K buys a lot of ....whatever....! So far, no grief whatsoever and the simpler routine tasks of maintenance are a breeze.
I am hoping that you would kindly respond to one question that nags me, at the risk of revealing what I consider to be one of the very few imperfections of our Canadian S10's: Does your US S10 have the ability to switch back and forth from MPH to KM's?

thanks for the kind words Rob! $10,000 CA or US is way too much price differential with the BMW. I don't blame you at all. I have a number of friends with BMW GS bikes and they have been trouble free for them, but I can't get over the price difference.
Yes, the US bikes can switch between MPH & KM's, though it's not easy. You have to hold the menu switch down for 2 seconds to enter the setting mode. Then use the select switch to move down to "Units." Push "Menu" and KM or Mile will flash. You can use the select switch to pick which one you want and push Menu again to save it. I would imagine the Canadian bikes would have the same system.
Do you still ride the KLR much? I felt there was too much overlap with the Tenere.
Yamaha reliability. The ride is comfortable. Does the job. I'll buy another one.

Thanks for sharing. Just a comment on oil fill. I have had engines in the past that were very difficult to judge the levels during fills. So now I get measure containers for each application.
I bring the old oil up to temp ... let it drain till it's only a few drops per minute left in the case.
The if it's 900ml capacity for example, I'll put in a measured 850ml's then tickle up to full level.
It end's up being quite a quick and certainly accurate method. I hope this is of some help to you. Baz Australia.

I got my own kitchen liter/quart pyrex. then when buying the gallon (don't quote me, 3.78L) , pour off the .3L into the pyrex and then pour the exact 3.5L (close enough) into my bike, same for my wife's.
Own a 2013 S10 for the past 5yrs.No issues at all. Easiest bike to access plugs, air box, battery without unscrewing alot of panels/screws compared to other similar adv bikes.
I'm glad to hear you haven't had any issues either. I haven't had to open up the bike much, but it does seem to be pretty easy to do so.

Happy trails.com has pictures of the mounting system ..all are bike make model and year specific..but panniers are universal mount so if I want to take the boxes off the super tenere and place them on the klr there is only the 4 bolts and the panniers bolt right to the system on the klr

yes the main mounting racks stay attached but the are not that bad,comparable to any other pannier mounting system..and the panniers are easily remover buy removing two top bolts and loosening the two lower bolts...takes less than 5 minutes for both...
that's the system I had on my KLR. I didn't like the way the racks looked on the bike, but it was pretty easy to remove them.
I recently took a 2017 Super T for a test drive during our local Yamaha demo ride day, I was very excited to try it, it looked to be the perfect bike, but I was pretty disappointed, I found it to have a pretty long throw for its shifting, which meant a lot of false neutrals. the route of the demo ride was pretty lack luster, and the group got split up which meant the ride pretty much sucked as the guy leading the portion of the group that i was in got nervous and kept everyone going pretty slow.
I am not writing the bike off, and I do plan on giving it another test ride someday to see how it truly performs, but i do know i was not a fan of the long shift throw (but to be fair to the bike, my daily driver is a sport bike, so the long shift is probably something I am just not used to) the one great thing I did notice was how smooth the power delivery was, I was very nervous jumping on a 1200cc bike for the first time, but it was very easy to control the throttle response.
That's a tough test ride route they put you on. I've found the bike really excels at higher speed travel as well as twisty roads and packed gravel/dirt. I hope you get a chance to really stretch the throttle next time.
I came off a VFR800 and haven't noticed the shifting being that long of a throw. I just don't have false neutrals with it. I would think you would notice the bike's power/weight ratio is down compared to a sport bike. It doesn't have the power of its rivals and it's heavier. That's something I do notice.
I'm wondering if something like a Multistrada or KTM Adventure would be more up your alley. They are lighter, more powerful and have gobs of character to them.

Christopher Leslie went from busa's and previous bike was a b king so the tenere was my first adventure bike.Have it now 10months or so and love it gear changes you will get used too and they wont bother you at all.probably you just needed to ride it a bit harder that day but i understand you couldn't because of the circumstances.A great bike really.

Thanks for welcoming questions. Is it easy to loft the front wheel over small obstacles? My old and trusty R100GS was an old hand at clutchless wheelies from walking speeds and I loved that easy ability. Low speed torque is beautiful.
I'm not super skilled at that maneuver, so I would say it's easier for a skilled rider. It will do it...easier to load the foot pegs first.
It does wheely easily but the traction control causes it to come right back down. When the front wheel slows the t/c kicks in and spoils the fun.
Also I’m 5’5” , will I be tiptoeing when stopping at traffic lights as per other dirt bikes I have ridden before?
That Oil Level thing is pretty common. My FJ-09 does the same thing. I do the oil change meticulously, making sure it is only 2/3 up the window. Go for a ride and sure enough the level shows as though it is overfilled. It's not though... I put it on the sidestand, have someone lean the bike upright and can see how the level is just barely at the top of the window.
It's kind of a pain in the ass, isn't it? My other Japanese bikes were much easier to read.
My '03 Kawa Voyager is one of those type of bikes where the Guru's say, ignore the sight glass. With it's 2 drain bolts and large canister filter hole that is exposed when you pull it out to change it, it drains well. Then exactly 3.5L back in. As long as no leaks, you just ride it till next change (or if smoking). Actually, other than a road debris punching a crack into my aluminum oil case 4 years ago (replaced with a good used one), no engine problems at all in 81k miles. They say these hydraulic lifted, water cooled, engines will go 300k. Anyway, I think you in a later video mention the amount to add then never mind unless no oil in the sight window (???). Cool video. I'm looking to buy an adventure bike this year and your comments and videos about the Tenere are very helpful. I'm just worried about the seat height . I'm 5'10 , so not short but I want to feel stable when I come to a halt! How do you feel about this as I like the Tenere the best out of the adventure bikes. thanks , Tom.
Hi Tom, thanks for the comment. I'm only 5'8" and I can flat foot the Tenere without problem. There's a seat adjustment bracket on the frame so you can move the seat to a high or low amount. I always forget about that in my videos.
I lowered mine with lowering links from Soupie’s. They are adjustable and I lowered it about 1 1/2-2 inches Just enough to feel more comfortable.Also lowered the front by sliding the fork tubes up into the triple clamps as far as they would go. It’s been like this for 6 years now with no problems.
Of all the reviews/comments on the super 10, The most common "issue" was the lack of quality/construction of the panniers. The super 10. from Yamaha seems to have the best owner's review for reliability. This seems to be over a few model years as well so take it for what it's worth.

A RUclips reviewer said the ST has 'stability issues' at speeds in excess of 80m/h. He also said he's using some sort of 50/50 tire (which I presume is dirt/road compound and tread) and feels this could have something to do with it. What has your experience been in this respect? How fast have you ridden/cruised on the Tenere? What tires do you use? (as appear in this video). Thanks so much
I'm using the Mitas E-07 Dakar's, which are a 50/50 tire. I've felt those stability issues too. Not sure what to call it. Yesterday I had the bike up to 100 mph and while I didn't feel unsafe, the bike didn't seem as planted and smooth as a sport bike with street tires. I think the tires have something to do it with. With those tires the Tenere seems happiest at about 75 mph. Thanks for the question Daniel!

We don't have lane splitting here in the Northeast. But with the side cases I probably wouldn't. I did lane splitting in CA years ago with a VFR with hard cases and it was a close fit.

It doesn't have an excessive vibration. The twin motor is pretty smooth...this is coming from a guy who rode a single and a v-twin before that.

I literally went to the owners manual and put each setting as it was described in there. I'm about 170 lbs, which is close to the rider weight they calibrate it for. I haven't had any issues. I just set it there and forgot about it.
I have a quick question. You have the mita’s e07 Dakars on your bike. I have the same. Have you had any problems with the front tire vibrating enough to cause your had to get numb? I am wondering if I have thrown a weight ? Would you mind giving me your input? thanks. Love this bike
Hi Jim, sorry for the delay in answering your question. No, I haven't had that issue with the Mitas. In fact I was riding the bike most of the day yesterday and the e-07's felt like sport-touring tires after a while. Very smooth. I'm sorry you're having that issue. It might we worth looking to see if it's balanced...but I don't balance the tires either. Most of my riding is slower speed and it didn't feel as necessary to me.
It's really hard to get all the old oil out of a bike when you change it. That's why I've seen a LOT of bikes with too much oil in them. Don't just put in what the bike says it can hold. Put in a quart less and then see where you are.
I'm 6' tall and I'm on my toes with most of these adventure bikes when I come to a stop. I understand you need clearance, but it seems like you would want your feet to touch easily in an "off road" environment.
I agree with you about the ground clearance. For probably 95% of the situations you ride in you don't need all that ground clearance, yet we sometimes suffer with excessive seat height 100% of the time.
I need to try putting a lot less oil into the Tenere when I change it.
The S10 is very comfortable for a passenger...it has plenty of power to handle the extra weight even when fully loaded with luggage...may be best to ride in touring mode to give smoother ride for passenger...ES model very good to quickly change suspension depending on passenger cargo combinations

As for hard cases nobody sells them so they endure fall, but had you installed original yamaha engine guard, you'd probably avoid damage - they don't look like much but I had fall aroud 30 kmph and don't even have a scratch on side cases.
The altrider guards on the bike look a lot more robust than the factory Yamaha ones. I'm not sure how you could avoid having the side case strike the ground when the bike goes over.
They're lower around engine and support they give keep back of motorcycle high up.
Just had my good old TDM stolen (God knows why!) and my local dealer has a s10 in black 15 plate, all the bells n whistles with 39k on the clock. One owner and has fsh looks good. Selling at just under £8k GB. Do you think mileage high or would you anticipate the bikes reliability would mean I should get it before it goes. Great vid, by the way.
My Tenere has about 18,000 miles on it now, so that's pretty low to compare. So far no problems at all. Never been to the shop. The only thing I would consider on that bike is if the valves have been inspected or adjusted yet. That would be my only consideration.
There are a number of high mileage riders who have used Tenere's with perfect reliability: Nick Sanders & Long Haul Paul. Check them out. The bikes are very solid. I would expect mine to go to 100,000 miles, as my last bike did (Honda VFR).

I think the oil leak was caused by using an automotive filter. It's odd because I've used them for years on other bikes without trouble. Once I switched back to a factory filter it was fine.
Great bike for camping. With the factory bags I can pack everything I need and no one can tell I'm fully loaded for the road.

It's really a shame that they stopped making the E07-Dakars....I have one left to throw on the rear once I wear out the one that's on the bike. I like it paired with the Shinko 804 on the front.

Does your tenere get pretty buzzy in the handle bars, seat, pegs and pretty much all over (blurry mirrors as well from the vibrations) at about 5000 rpm and up. Asking bc my 2014 does.

I don't get this obsession with riding on dirt roads, all we had was dirt roads for long enough, I'm glad to see the tarmac!! I'd take a super ten anyday over that troublesome German tractor the GS.
I think there is something very cool about riding dirt roads and exploring places that are off the beaten path. Life moves a lot slower on the dirt roads.
What is the crash bar on your bike and do you like it?
It is the Alt-Rider bar. It works well. The bike went down once in the dirt and the bar did its job with no damage.
This is a heavy and tall bike. How "technical" terrain have you ridden with it? Is there a big difference in handling to XT660Z Tenere when riding rocky paths with slow speed? Dropping the bike can be a nightmare?
I have a video of me crashing (more like it slid out at 12 mph) the Tenere in a pretty slick, muddy area. It's not the bike's strength. It will be happy all day on groomed dirt/gravel roads. I sometimes take it on unimproved dirt roads, but only if I know they are relatively flat and smooth.
I imagine there would be a big difference with an XT660Z. If you are looking to ride rough or rocky terrain, that would be a much better choice for you.

Unfortunately, I think it would be too tall. Even with the lower seat you'd have to lower the bike several more inches and I'm not sure how that's possible. I wish manufacturers could come up with better ways for the ADV bikes to fit people of all sizes.

Maybe you explain that, but I just heard you say that Yamaha says "NOT" to have all three of their bags on at the same time????? what left bag off, with top and right on. Or top off so you can have both side cases????? Sorry, either that is a lawyer thing, but would be a deal breaker for me. How do you adventure and meet their requirements?
Yamaha continues to say on their website that all three bags shouldn't be used at the same time because of the risk of overloading. I use all three bags pretty frequently (dirt & street) and have never had an issue with instability. I try to keep the top case light so that most of the weight stays low. I think Yamaha's warning is just a lawyer thing.
Why tenere having exhaust on the left hand side?What is the reason for that?
I'm not sure why they did it. On either side it would take away from the luggage capacity.

It's a 2014, first year of the redesign. I bought it used in March 2015 for $10,800. It only had 700 miles on it and already had all of the farkles that you see in the video (about $2500 worth by my count). Yes, that windshield lip was already on it. I think it would compare nicely to a VStrom 1000. The shaft drive is a nice change for me.
change the oil filter or tighten it up i think most of the leak is coming from this part
I did tighten it up and thought that would help, but it kept leaking. I changed the filter from an automotive one to a Yamaha one and it stopped leaking. I have used automotive filters for years with no issues, so not sure what the cause of this one was.
K&N is my favorite for all my vehicles. Of course, i was quoted $32 + tax at a shop here in Panama, but I am shipping one down from US for about $7 plus a few $'s for shipping. I use the reusable air filters also in all my vehicles as well. Of course, Arizona and New Mexico are dusty places.
@@AdventuresWithMe00 The manufacturers making auto oil filters changed to a convex design. This is a common problem that, as you mentioned, you solved using a concave designed filter.

I got a klr with 28K miles and would like to upgrade to a super10 for my first South America trip in a few years. I found a 2012 at $6400 with all the farkles I need but has 71K miles. Would that be a good deal?
that seems about as cheap as you can get a Tenere for. That's more like KLR money. I guess it depends on your budget. I think for a few thousand more you could get a 2014+ that, to me, is a nice improvement over the first generation. You'll get a smoother power delivery and electronic cruise control.
71,000 miles is high for most people, but I think it's actually okay. My previous bike, a Honda VFR, had 110,000 miles on it when I sold it and it was still running well. This seems like a pretty good deal, 50% off or more off retail.

Thank you very much for the reply. I appreciate your insight on the 2014+ models. I kind of find the 71K miles a bit high, since i would be adding about 45k miles. I still got about 4 more years to work hard and save up to travel for a year. Hopefully by then, the 2014+ super10's will be more budget friendly. Looking at all your Super10 videos, keep up the great work!
how tall are you, and do you sit flat-footed on the bike or u tippy toe a bit?
I'm 5'8", 30" inseam. I have the seat in the lowest position. It's a bit tippy toed. Very manageable.

No, the wheels spokes have been great. But the bike only has 20,000 miles on it.
Nice video. Why would Yamaha say "not to use all three bags at the same time" I don't get that. I would think Yamaha would design their bags (or any bag manufacturer) with the intention that at some point the bike is going to be dropped in an off pavement situation and would (try) build for that.
Those are good points John. I'm not sure what Yamaha was thinking. The legal department may have been behind the "don't use all three bags at once" recommendation. But I've done it many times and never had an issue. I do wish the factory side cases were engineered better. I've tipped a few bikes with side cases and not seen a break that dramatic, especially in a first gear tip over.

no, none. I just change the oil every time I do an engine oil change. Very simple.
A side note about the happy trails panniers, they will protect your bike and you in case of a drop or tip over..I learned this the usual way,,kicked up to put side stand up in a parking lot right foot slipped on wet surface of pavement over I went with bike running, side box caught the bike,able to get off the bike super easy,and fast made picking it back up super easy and no damage to me (leg) or bike and box was also unharmed, not even a scratch..
that's good. you know the knock on the hard panniers is people say you can break a bone in your leg if you fall since the bags don't give. IDK. Soft luggage is a bit of a compromise in practicality for me.
perhaps,but if your leg end up under the panniers you would probably end up breaking something anyway. we can justify anything we want by telling ourselves this is why i like or dont like something,or this might happen if you do this or that. but truth is you dont know until it happens..then its a mute point because you know at that point exactly what will happen...
What oil you used for engine?
I have been using Shell Rotella-T 15W-40 for about 15 years now with no issues. I had over 100,000 miles on my previous bike. But oil is a very personal thing. I would never say you must or should use a particular brand.
Does the Tenere, with its side radiator, burn your leg?
no, not at all. It doesn't get hot in the warm weather.

the LED turn signals are stock on this model.

It was somehow related to the oil filter. I used an automotive filter. I switched to a Yamaha filter and no more leaks. I have used automotive filters for years without a problem. Not sure what happened here.

liked brakes work awesome , on my bmw. i would imagine they work good on the yamaha .
I don’t even notice them. I use the front brake only most of the time, and also the back when I need to stop quickly. I also use the rear only when I’m going slow, parking lots and such.

I'm not entirely sure what caused the leak, but once I replaced the oil filter with a genuine Yamaha model it stopped. I don't know if it was a compromised seal or something about the Bosch filter. I've used Bosch filters for many years on my VFR and never had any issues.

I live in Thailand about 3 months out of the year.
Every smallish town has a Yamaha and Honda dealer.

I'm 5'8" with a 30" inseam. I don't have any issues getting my feet down with the seat in the low position. I think you could still do it fairly comfortably if you were a bit shorter.
low position is when you remove that four legged plastic part under the seat which holds the seat inch or two higher ?

The bikes display looks quite far from the riders ‘line of sight’, is this so?
It might seem that the gauge cluster is further away, but I think it's also higher than on many street bikes. You don't have to look down too much to glance at it. I've never thought there was an issue being able to read the display quickly. I think Yamaha did a good job with it.
I'm 5'8" and don't have any issues flat-footing the bike at a stop. The seat is at the lower setting. At 5'5" you will probably have to do some balancing to make it work. It's certainly a lot heavier than any dirt bike, but it's well balanced too.

2015 Super 10 ZE 30k km with no probs..just flashed the ecu to release the beast,instant throttle response now..big difference to std..will not part with this machine.

yes, that did it. I have used automotive filters in the past on other bikes. When I switched to a Yamaha filter the leaking stopped.

Dont buy the factory bags they are straight junk and if you drop it like in this video the plastic parts will break. The tires are not needed and like he said he did regular dirt/ grave roads which it wont make a difference loaded on 50/50 especial since your mostly on roads. On top of that hes got oil leak on a new bike which he thinks might be from putting to much oil. Which it is not if you over fill the oil it will clog your air filter. What is possible is that the oil filter is starting to come loose and the dirt/oil that has formed has helped to hold it in place. This is a great bike and it sucks is the miss information is being spread by this channel and living off the slab on what is need to make this a great bike.
I don't feel I'm spreading misinformation...just my experience. The oil leak stopped after I went back to a Yamaha filter.

I try to keep it on public dirt roads these days. But yes, it's a good idea if you go off-road.
I am starting to agree, even for road bikes. Even in the US you can have pothole and other debris that gets on the tarmac that will ruin you day. Here in Panama, I often see 4 inch and larger rocks just sitting on the road. That and potholes that if you don't see it will swallow a 17" tire. Just saying, that the price of a skid plate is much less than a cracked motor or most other parts on these bikes. (I have even seen a couple of times, a Brahma bull running down the road with the farmer chasing it, on a main highway (oh, if only there had been somewhere to stop for a camera).

I have an XT 660x and have been agonising over getting a large capacity tourer for mainland European trips. BMW =too expensive and technical. Kawasaki= versys=4 cylinders, v strom=ugly stick, Italian=.......... Eh, Italian, KTM 990= almost perfect and Honda=perfect but soulless.
I think I'll be sticking with Yamaha as I love my supermoto but would like to hang on to my fillings. 😆
Can't disagree with you. I have had Honda and great bikes, but almost too good...no soul. I love my Yamahas. Better reliability than my Honda.
Yamaha beats GS hands down. Reliability for starters ,no use having a bike with the bells and whistles while you look at it from the breakdown vehicle.
