Hey there! You definitely have some points and there are lot of things Notion does that can't be imitated as well in Obsidian. However, I just want to play devil's advocate: - After using both Obsidian and Notion recently, I feel like learning Obsidian isn't too hard and it can definitely be used casually for notes and daily journalling, not everyone has to create fancy templates and structures. I know many of my classmates that are transitioning into Obsidian from Google Docs/Notion, and are enjoying the experience so far. - Syncing can be flawless with the paid feature and almost-flawless with OneDrive/iCloud syncing - There is version control on the paid Obsidian Sync version, and with the free version you can see previous stages of your notes in the "File Recovery" section. - I think that one is subjective, as the WYSIWYG applies to everything except the line you're working on, which is important if you're working with markdown. - This is definitely a weak point of Obsidian, having to export to PDF does get tedious. - There is a plugin that makes table creation easy called "Advanced Tables", but it is still restricted to markdown and is not customizable as notion. - Sliding panes plugin/side-by-side notes can act as an alternative, but yeah this is one thing I really enjoy about Notion :p - The "Dataview" plugin can create similar Notion tables and queries while the "Kanban" plugin can imitate the board view. In hindsight, the two of them shouldn't really be compared as I'm using them both for completely different purposes, but the video is getting decent exposure from the clickbait so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I still stand by with preferring Obsidian over Notion for pure note-taking and academics though. Nonetheless, thanks for pointing out some of the edges Notion has over Obsidian since I actually had no Notion experience until very recently :)
Notion is a really nice concept, but I think it is needlessly complex for some users who only want to take notes. It has so many options, customizations and tools for a wide array of unrelated needs, yet it lacks the right features for simply writing down ideas and study them. IT DOESN'T WORK OFFLINE. Obsidian on the other hand isn't perfect either. It is still buggy, intrincate to sync on multiple devices and dry to use, but at least has the correct focus for idea management. IMO both softwares will grow and became much better, especially thanks to the huge community support they have. But for now, the offline usability is the deal breaker for me.

@@itsjohnmavrick it’s when you started using it as if you were creating your own notes. I think choosing a topic and following it simplistically whilst showing how to link it’s different parts is helpful- I will have to watch that section again but it made sense
@@StellasVegetablegardens Ah I see, yeah i'm glad my rough (yet specific) example was enough to help the concept make more sense, and thanks for responding :) Anything specific you're still struggling on that I could potentially make a video on?
Thank you!! I starting using Obsidian yesterday and was really lost. I'm in my second semester and struggling really hard with organizing my notes as a sp-t/audiologist student. I've been searching for a good note taking app for awhile now, and almost went with notion bc was the only app that had a lot of content about how to use it as a college student in my language. This video was a life saver.
Ayy, I'm really glad I was able to help you out :D I feel like notion is also pretty good for note taking, but you made the right choice with choosing Obsidian :) I've been finding it hard to think of video ideas recently, do you have anything you would want a video on?
I would say if you're starting out with Obsidian, put thought into how you want to organize the vault. For example, I like to use layers that all originate from one "node" the index, the next layers are "areas" so daily notes, projects, training as the first layer, then I subdivide from there building a hierarchy. For example, my Daily Note gets attached to a month hub page, which is connected to a calendar year hub page that connects to the daily note hub page, and then the Index page. On the index, I have the main hub pages connected, and I use Dataview to provide the rest of the index, because it doesn't connect them to that page. Obsidian is built on the Atom IDE and so it functions like an IDE, meaning it has powerful search capabilities. If you have 1,000 notes and in one of them you had "I am awesome!" and you search for it, you'll find it without any tags or linking.
I found this video very insightful. I've been using Obsidian for a couple of months now and your method of approaching spaced repetition in it would be helpful for my students. Know that your videos are very much appriciated and any examples from your obsidian flow are welcome as far as I'm concerned ;-) Thank you!
Woah, have you managed to get your students into Obsidian? :o I appreciate the kind words and the feedback, I'll keep thinking about any possible workflows I can showcase to help students using it :)
Woah, I'm honoured to have my content being used in classrooms, I hope you and your students are finding the app useful! Is there anything you would like me to make a video on, like how to set up class notes and school organization in obsidian?
I love the concept of Obsidian and the idea of a great "personal knowledge management" tool. It's a bit of a dream to have everything well organized in one place like that. However as an Engineering student I compromize, and use a combo of pen and paper and OneNote for learning and practicing skills and organizing my stuff. Even though OneNote is inferior in organizing and linking notes (only having uni-directional links). However, when you work with dynamics/mechanics or 3D maths for example, its vital to draw figures, and OneNote can do that natively with a stylus, or the phone app can scan and auto-crop written work switfly, which OneNote then actually makes searchable with OCR. There's been done studies that prove a positive effect of using pen-based input and drawings over keyboard-input when taking notes as well (Mueller and Oppenheimer, (2014). The pen is mightier than the keyboard.) (Van der Meer and Van der Weel (2017), Only Three Fingers Write, but the Whole Brain Works.) But I envy some of the features that Obsidian has in terms of more neat organization and linking with back-links and graph-view.
Good points! Have you looked into Excalidraw for Obsidian? it's a plugin that lets you incorporate drawings and visuals into your notes. I did use onenote in school for things like math assignments, but I still typed my notes in Obsidian for the most part.
I put this video on in the background during my Pomodoro Method™ and I learned a few things! Thank you for this video I think my studies are more efficient and I now have more time to commit into the Metaverse!

I've just learned about Obsidian the other day and was thinking about just using it for summaries. But your video displayed it as a great note taking tool aswell. Additionally I've discovered that I has an infinite canvis as well. So I'm wondering if after all the time you've used it you'd still recommend it as a note taking tool or you'd just use it for summaries? On top of this do you mainly use it in courses where you lack guidance and don't have a clear script or could you recommend it either way? Thanks :)
Any chance you could share what your Anime MOC looks like? I'm starting to sort of grasp how I should be setting this up, but I still get hung up on things like "I want to track all the anime I watch or want to watch, I should have a template....but also do I have a main page? Should I have a folder for watched or to watch?". Just so many "what if's" that I get flustered, and I feel like if I could just see an example of how you organize the anime notes I'll really understand how to use this both for school AND personal things.
I personally use a website like anilist to keep track of the things I'm currently watching, and mostly use Obsidian for like per-episode thoughts, reflections, and other feelings/ideas I get from anime that's information-based. Looks like this, which also includes start and end time: noteshare.space/note/cl90wotqo1422901n30qdvrb6l#9y0A8SrRRxZRJQa2+soT2hY3hnv+GiHNa9jKmQ92+/o

Are you doing the second degree program!? I'm doing one in Ontario. Definitely going to be using this setup. Been debating between Notion and Joplin, but this is a good go-between the two. Subscribed, going to check out your other videos.
Ooo, what two degrees are you pursuing? And no, at the moment I'm only doing a computer science/software related major :p Although I don't use them anymore as I'm pursuing other interests and fields, the notes and flashcards will always be there for me hehe. I would recommend checking out this video ruclips.net/video/0UTzpIdLbVos/видео.html&ab_channel=JohnMavrick to see how I actually implement the course stuff
@@itsjohnmavrick Hey, oh no, I'm doing a second degree CS program. These second degree programs are for people who took useless degrees as their first major lol (Health Sciences), but can't get into traditional CS programs because they need valid high school credits from the previous 5 years. UBC offers it as well (the best second CS degree program), but it's too much of a trek from Ontario (they're not online), and they take at least 2 years to complete. I think you made the right call taking a CS/Software major. I'm switching from analytics into tech. Thanks for the link! I'll definitely check out the video.
@@XAUCADTrader Ahh I see, yeah the degree is chill but I'm also second guessing whether I want to go to school or not, and with your previous interest in analytics are you planning on doing something related to data science? :o
@@itsjohnmavrick I could do something in data science. The degree will open more doors, but I was just looking for a structured way to learn CS concepts. I have friends that have made it by going to self-taught route, but they entered long ago when the dev market was really hot. There's a slowdown now, so I have no issues to hunker down in a 1-year degree program (or 2 with coop). I could be spending awhile trying to find that first job anyway. This will be my third degree lol (second was education (1-year)), but I do not regret that one as I have a license to teach. I'm bilingual so I have a lot of flexibility in finding jobs in education with a floor of around 60k (BC is in the 40's =/). As someone that went through a lot of school, if your degree is useful (yours is) and/or gets you a license, you might as well do it. You'll have it forever, and you will make it past a company's HR algorithms and HR screeners. No one will doubt you know your stuff. Especially as the economy gets tougher and everyone tries to stream into the tech sector (where you'll see self-taught and bootcampers). Canada isn't a bad country to study, our tuition is fairly cheap. My suggestion is to use the coop stream to make finding jobs easier. It helped me tremendously to secure analytics work when I graduated. Check out Shane Hummus' channel, he talks about this. CS/Soft-Eng are the best degrees now - best ROI and best employability. When you get to my age (mid-30s), a year in the 20s has HUGE returns in investments in human capital. A degree is a seal of established human capital. Grind it out if you can. You'll be happy you did. Keep in mind, if you want the big bucks in the USA, TN Visas require 4-year Honours degrees. I'm sure it works the same with other countries. While you may not find the degree useful, it is useful against gatekeepers and immigration (which is the definition of a gatekeeper lol.) Also, of the people that don't have degrees, that insecurity doesn't seem to go away - more likely to have imposter syndrome or get paranoid that others may look down on you. You can ask for additional input (from people in the sector) from /cscareerquestions and /cscareerquestionsCAD on Reddit.
@@XAUCADTrader Thanks for the insight! Yeah there are benefits to completing the degree and it would be a good safety net but I just personally prefer self-learning over the traditional school system to offer more flexibility in what I learn. The thing is, I'm not sure if I can see myself working at a big corporate company working on one specific feature. I'd much rather start or work at a startup with lots of responsibility. Like you said, it would lead to a lot of money and security, but I could instead try to earn it through other income streams. Maybe I'll take my word back and go back to school after a few years of failed progress haha
Thank you for the video as I’m thinking about switching across from Notion. I am very visual and love the layouts and colours you are using. Did you have to program them in or is that a template selection? Cheers, Kat from Oz 🇦🇺
Hi there! I did not have to program anything in shown in this video, except for the pure black theme I was using, but now that's possible through a community plugin called "Advanced Appearance". Most of the color changes are done using Obsidian's themes, and the layout of my sidebars can be customized just by moving around notes and side panels for plugins.
the video talks about a template from Timothy Kenney. I can't seem to see the link in the description. Could you send me the link? or reply/post it here? Thanks!
hi, sorry i forgot to reply but i tested it and yeah i couldn't find it either anymore :( i think it wasn't as needed anymore now that edit mode is not purely markdown, making it more readable?
I could definitely share it, it just might not be too relevant to you as your curriculum might be different and might be better off for you to take notes related to things you struggle on/need to remember. Do you want me to just share the outline or all the notes?
@@itsjohnmavrick I was interested in the structure because I wanted to do the same thing for school and I'm not that familiar with obsidian yet and from what I've seen I like the way you work. I don't know if it is better to have the outline or all the notes, you can choose yourself based on what takes up less time, Thank you for your trouble
@@paolonicolet960 I feel like it would be best if you did some practice taking notes on Obsidian instead of me giving them to you, so if you want I can make an example video on how I would convert traditional notes into Obsidian notes. I am unable to get the ideas bank template, not getting the mail. I would also like to get the neon theme you have with the dark black background. Great video!

Hi there! I guess the link I put was the wrong one, thanks for bringing it to my attention :) This should work, let me know if there are any issues and good luck with your studies! github.com/ransurf/obsidian-resources
If you're talking about having the different colors, in the first ``` you should also add the language of the code, so if it's c you would have ```c and if its python you would have ```py . Is this what you were looking for? :p
it would require me to upload only those specific notes in a vault which might be tedious, I feel the value of notes is the process at which you create them for your own personal needs so I think create your own will be worth it;)
@@itsjohnmavrick Im fully new to obsidian, and the notes looked very similair to what im studying for my test atm (Discrete mathmetics). I will try to get something like you got.
Dude we should make an online web version of this where everyone can update it. Maybe call it something catchy, like, I don't know, "wikipedia" or something.
unfortunately that "wikipedia" idea does not have an exclusive structure for the computer science notes and concepts that will be on the final, or space to add my personal thoughts, experiences, and understanding 😔

I felt that there was a bit too much jumping from point to point with no explanation of how you got there. For someone starting out and trying to learn how to integrate Obsidian into their workflow, it just caused more questions than offered solutions.
I tried to show as much examples as possible but yeah there was a lot packed in the video. I have tried to slow it down in a future video but its led to really low retention rates compared to my average style :/ Maybe you can use my videos to see whats possible, then do further research into other videos or resources?

@@itsjohnmavrick Thank you so much!
Great video - there is no link to the template you mentioned created by your friend.
Yeah, he never got it to work so I removed it :/

Pretty good content!
How do I set a black background and the look as it is on part of the video?
I took an existing theme and made a few adjustments to the background colors by changing the CSS.
Here's a link to the files: github.com/ransurf/obsidian-theme-dark-80s-neon
@@itsjohnmavrick Thanks a lot!
Hi, what background music you are using? The beats makes me feel serene
it's mostly anime lofi by the artist kijugo :D
appreciate it! btw could i know did u changed ur font style (or size)? cuz im using windows system too but ur text on obsidian is kinda *bolder* than mine, and it looks prettier!
theres an option in settings -> appearance :)
@@itsjohnmavrick thankss
What theme are you using? It looks great!
which one? The colorful one is 80s neon, and the black one is the same but with custom css to make the background black :)
Can you make a video about how you sync obsidian PC-mobile without obsidian sync?
Yeah for sure, I can definitely make a video on that :) I'm using a windows PC and android device, so it might be different for you if you're using apple products.
@@itsjohnmavrick Yea, I am also using android and windows devices, soo.....I will waiting for the video🤩
Are you doing the second degree program!? I'm doing one in Ontario. Definitely going to be using this setup. Been debating between Notion and Joplin, but this is a good go-between the two. Subscribed, going to check out your other videos.
Ooo, what two degrees are you pursuing? And no, at the moment I'm only doing a computer science/software related major :p
Although I don't use them anymore as I'm pursuing other interests and fields, the notes and flashcards will always be there for me hehe.
Cheers,
Kat from Oz 🇦🇺
Hi there! I did not have to program anything in shown in this video, except for the pure black theme I was using, but now that's possible through a community plugin called "Advanced Appearance". Most of the color changes are done using Obsidian's themes, and the layout of my sidebars can be customized just by moving around notes and side panels for plugins.
🙏 thanks!
@@itsjohnmavrick what theme did you use for your phone? I like it
@@misoompa88 its the 80s neon theme but i changed the colors to be blacked out, its on my github if you're interested :)

what theme do you use?
Your C moc looks very interesting, will you share it?
I could definitely share it, it just might not be too relevant to you as your curriculum might be different and might be better off for you to take notes related to things you struggle on/need to remember. Do you want me to just share the outline or all the notes?
@@itsjohnmavrick I was interested in the structure because I wanted to do the same thing for school and I'm not that familiar with obsidian yet and from what I've seen I like the way you work.
I don't know if it is better to have the outline or all the notes, you can choose yourself based on what takes up less time,
Thank you for your trouble
@@paolonicolet960 I feel like it would be best if you did some practice taking notes on Obsidian instead of me giving them to you, so if you want I can make an example video on how I would convert traditional notes into Obsidian notes. How did you change the appearance of your code blocks?
If you're talking about having the different colors, in the first ``` you should also add the language of the code, so if it's c you would have ```c and if its python you would have ```py . Is this what you were looking for? :p

the link never worked due to complications on their end so I just removed it :/
Any chance you wanna share that logic course with the morgans law etc.

Dude we should make an online web version of this where everyone can update it. Maybe call it something catchy, like, I don't know, "wikipedia" or something.

I felt that there was a bit too much jumping from point to point with no explanation of how you got there. For someone starting out and trying to learn how to integrate Obsidian into their workflow, it just caused more questions than offered solutions.
