In terms of natural ability, Maradona and Messi are top, but Messi can do everything that Maradona and all the former greats did and more. He is the complete player. I have huge respect for Ronaldo and what he has achieved as well, but when you look at the stats, Messi is a better goalscorer, playmaker, passer and dribbler and that's what puts him at the very top of the tree. Taking everything into account, Messi is the greatest ever, Ronaldo 2nd and Maradona 3rd.

i think for us its easy to quantify, since we witnessed live what he does. i missed like 50 barca ( official) games since messi took the #10 jersey, because i felt it wasnt right to miss him playing, because it was clear that at any time he could pull something very special out of his sleeve. imagine what i saw. i easily can quantify it. and im 37, still i feel like a small child when i know a barca game is coming up. i get excited and the question arises "what is he going to do, what is going to happen". upcoming generations might have more problems with the quantification though.

when I was a kid back in the 11/12 season, I went to Barcelona to watch them play against Valencia. I had food poisoning, and my mom said we shouldn’t go to the game since I was so ill and we traveled to watch, but I refused to stay in the hotel. When we reached the camp nou I had never been that ill in my life and thought I was dying. Messi scored 4 goals that night and xavi scored 1. I recovered the next morning and to this day I always told myself watching Messi cured me. I will never forget that magical night. He will always be the greatest player of all time.

i know it's not a popular opinion but I think what makes him so great is that he cares about his opponents too and tries not to humiliate them. Whenever he gets closer to the goal post, he never tries for flashy, full force shots but rather just gets the ball through the post. We should all learn from him to be a great human as well.

That was all he needed to do, and he ran off at top speed, no one could catch him. And he faced against some of the best defenders of all time: Maldini, Cannavaro, Nesta, Zambrotta and Costacurta. As much as Messi is talented in dribbling, speed and acceleration, you can still see all the effort he puts in to get around defenders. R9 was so effortless, it was like he was toying with the opposition. The difference is crystal clear. Even though Messi may be greater at this point, R9's gift will forever be remembered as something delightful. He had the talent and ability of someone who comes from an entirely different football universe. What he brought is easily the greatest there ever will be, it is unlikely we will never see such a force again.

You can't describe how Messi plays and explain why he is the best ever. There is something about him.. so magical that you just have to watch him and you will know... Even if you don't want to admit it deep down inside you know that you have never seen anything like this before. No statistics or description quite captures his brilliance. Normally you have to argue, show facts and statistics to win a debate but in his case you just have to tell people to watch him and they will understand. This sport fully consumes him and vice versa it's like he's made for it. He is not playing football, in fact football is presenting him to us as an example how it should be played.

Messi on the other hand is in tune with his body and that gives him the edge. He looks so effortless and he never gets injured. It's like R9 was a scientific experiment to create the best ever footballer but they made his too powerful so they cut it a bit and now we have Messi. Not quite as powerful but far more durable and far more intelligent in terms of vision and play making. R9 is the prototype... Messi is the finished product.

In my opinion Messi is the best player I have ever seen and I have been watching football for 30 years. No matter who people think is the best, it is their opinion as art is the same, what one person finds beautiful, another will not see and that is very true as what Messi paints on a football pitch is art. Whoever you choose is your opinion and you are entitled to it but the one thing nobody can dispute is Messi is in the same company as Pele and Maradona, he is at that table and in that conversation. If you put Maradona first and Messi second then that is subjective, just like if you pick Messi as one and Pele as two, I could not argue but he is already at that level. Three greatest players ever Messi, Pele and Maradona, in what order is down to opinion but there is only room at that table for three and Ronaldo, Zidane, Cruyff, Henry, Ibrahimovic, Socrates and far more who know more about the game than you or I ever wil say the same thing.

But he did it with the most talented national teams (aside from Spain 2008-2012) that ever existed, especially compared to other national teams back then. Garrincha, Silva, Zito, Didi. And this is only if you compare them to the teams back then. Nowadays pretty much every major football country would obliterate Brazil from 1962/70. Simply because football become more professional. Messi is one of the greatest ever, but amongst all the legends I've seen, there is none like Ronaldo El Fenomeno. There is more to football than just stats, trophies and records. Football is about a player's ability. Messi may have more complete attacking qualities, but R9 was something special every time he touched the ball. Defenders absolutely could not stop him when he touched the ball. He had that combination of speed, power, footwork, trickery and dribbling. His style was simple, a few stepovers, nutmegs, rainbow flicks, elasticos or roulettes. He had every trick and and he humiliated defenders and made it look so easy. As much as Messi is talented in dribbling, speed and acceleration, you can still see all the effort he puts in to get around defenders. R9 was so effortless, it was like he was toying with the opposition. The difference is crystal clear. Even though Messi may be greater at this point, R9's gift will forever be remembered as something delightful. He had the talent and ability of someone who comes from an entirely different football universe. What he brought is easily the greatest there ever will be, it is unlikely we will never see such a force again.

Went to see him live on Camp Nou last week... It was on my bucket list for me. It's really incredible the football era that we live in. As a child i grew up with Ronaldo(9) and Raul, but Messi made me realize i'm a fan of football first of all, of fair play, of magic. I do not own a Barca or Madrid shirt. I own an Argentina shirt because of him and i'm from Europe. God bless him. Be grateful for being able to witness such level of football. Enjoy every moment he touches the ball.

you need to realise that attributes like being better at one thing doesn't make a player better ... it is how you play and what you bring to the team, messi brings much more to the team , he has better goal ratio, more key passes and chances created , more key dribbles , more assists . he can score 91 goals in a year if he wants to but he has realised that scoring that many goals don t bring trophies and that s why last season he became much more altruistic and that is why he has many more trophies . overall messi is not only more talented , he is also more magic and a better team player . that being said you can prefer ronaldo more and maybe like how he plays more but as a professional football player messi is uncomparable

He is by far the best player I've ever seen. This guy can dribble, score, assist and beat 4-5 defenders in one action. It's not even about stats, just look at the way he drives the ball. How can people compare this guy to Ronaldo who can't even dribble one player? I'm not saying that Ronaldo isn't a great footballer, Ronaldo is a great goal scorer and a great finisher but Messi is something else and the funniest part is that Messi also has a better goal/assist ratio than Ronaldo even if you compare them since Ronaldo joinned Madrid. People whom don't admit that Messi is the best don't know anything about this sport or don't even watch football games or are Real Madrid fans since Ronaldo signed/ Manchester fans.
