- This has been in the works for far to long but I'm happy that I'm finally able to upload it after sitting on it for far too long. Please note that this lens is hella old and that this video is completely anecdotal, you might find a better copy of this lens than me or maybe not. That's the mystery and magic of vintage lenses :3

Zodel 135mm F/2.8 M42 - (Edit) There are multiple different versions fo this lens under different manufacturers, but from what I can tell most of them have the same construstion.

I have 2 of them. These are pretty sharp even wide open. One of my favorite lenses because of its size and performance. I don't know what your standards are but most any vintage lens will not be tack sharp wide open but they do have character more than a lot of lenses today.
Thanks for the upload, it was helpful!
I always refer to this as my "petite lens" lol. Originally picked it up because I love the Canon 40mm 2.8 and wanted a pancake-esque lens for my Minolta SLR and something that wouldn't have much of a footprint when used with an adapter on my Sony. I just know that as time goes on this lens will only keep gaining fans as people learn about the fun they can have with adapted glass.
Thanks for your video. You mentioned you adapt the lens to your Canon. is that a full frame Canon? And what adaptor did you use? The reason I ask is that I got an adaptor for minolta md / mc lenses to my Canon 6D and it didn't work. i read online that minolta lenses don't adapt that well to Canon, and left it at that.
I adapted the lens to my older Canon 5D earlier last year and also to my Canon 2000D but I never had any issues with anything. I believe I used the Gobe adaptor to adapt it from canon to Sony(before they rebranded themselves to Urth) I hadn’t really read anywhere that there could have been any issues with adapting this lens to any camera. Though I believe I only went with what I thought was the most appropriate at the time.
I don’t know if using 2 adapters changed anything drastically enough, though I should’ve noted that the mc to ef adapter has a lens of its own to (what I assume) refocus the projection on a slightly different plain. I’m not entirely sure but that’s just a ballpark guess.
I hope you can find a lens adapter that works for you.
Just picked up an oooold XG7 and have been looking for glass to slap on the front of it/the a7ii with the help of an adapter. This could be a neat street lens as it's just a tad wider than the 50 standard and I usually shoot 5.6 for portraits anyways.
Definitely, throw that Aperture at 5.6 and it’ll work wonders for some stylised pictures. I want to take it out soon with a friend of mine to see how flexible it gets with portraits :3
I think you have a flawed copy, or one in bad condition, suffering from bad fungus and/or haze. There is apparent haziness and glare in most of you shots. The copy I'm using suffers from none of that, it's crisp, clean, actually quite surprisingly sharp at f2.
Great review man.
Thank bro
i have a zukio 50mm and the imperfections make it perfection. In my opinion if you can learn to shoot with a old vintage lens you have to work a little more and work with/around the issues, I adapted myn onto my cannon which has amazing colour re-productivity. although on my om-10 using kodak colorplus 200 it has the very similar style and look to it. If i wanted a scene to have a sense of timelessness and raw emotion ill always pull out my vintage lens... even if its as heavy as a brick and not as sharp or as usable as other lenses. If your going in this direction with your channel Ill carry on watching. Although I personally know you this video is going in a direction that i can get behind. Also the photo of me was the first shot of the day whilst walking don't beat yourself up over it xD Once covid has gone away bro were gonna do some bigboy shoots.... Maybe even a road trip?????
George why you gotta say some soft shit chief, fuck.
Very inspiring video.. thank you.
Thank you, I really appreciate it :3
your lens might have been re-assembled wrong. It should be -waaaay- sharper than that. The fact that the house "glows" so much on the image might be a sign of dirty lenses (massive fungus inside or grease that evaporated from the diaphragm blades onto the inside of the lenses). You should shake it just to see if you can hear glass moving (bad reassembly), and then check through an intense light at an angle for fungus/haze/grease. ;)
I’ll be honest, I like the distortion it gives. Though I have never really used it in professional shoots, I’d rather not go screwing around in the housing and misplace anything and ruin my copy of this lens.
Besides if I cared about sharpness I’d just pull out my 50 1.8 🤷 I might consider sending it to someone who’s more competent than I am to clean it though if I ever needed it.
Dope
That’s a drug, and I sir. Don’t do drugs.
nice pop filter
Thanks bro, I’d like to thank my 3 used socks for sacrificing themselves for the betterment of my audio.
