I'm old so I miss the world I grew up in where we would have to GO to someone's apartment with a six pack in order to find out what they were doing. When I moved to Portland most of my friends were poor and couldn't afford landline phones. The biggest change in the world is that the phone has become a barrier to interaction with people -- hanging out at a coffee shop or bar isn't a guarantee of meeting someone because everyone is so busy being entertained by their phone. 24/7 entertainment is a giant barrier to the kind of creativity that comes from boredom. That said, having family and community is a good antidote to phone-life. Or spending time in places beyond the reach of reception. '- )
