Why wasn't the first thing you say Travis is ok?
At first seeing it sitting there on the racetrack, like a few others I was like, ah, it's probably fixable, he's just tore up, been there myself. After seeing it a little closer here, and especially the way the truck arm X member is bowed....ouch.....that one is hurt. Clips are one thing, and they can look gnarly, but if that center section takes enough lick to bow that truck arm mount, then she's hurt. That's too bad, Landon, I was one of the guys getting a huge charge out of seeing an almost 20 year old chassis, winning and beating out the latest greatest money can buy at Hickory. I know how it is, I killed one myself like that once, and had to strip it out and scrap the center section. It sucks. Glad your gear did it's job, it was obviously built well, and Travis is bruised but ok. That's a big deal. You can eventually build another racecar, but it's really tough when someone gets seriously injured or even worse in a racecar. Thanks for the video(s), I was wanting a better look at this car, now I know😟
Oh wow, so sorry to see that. Just glad that Travis is ok. He must of hit that wall a ton. R.I.P. Francis, we know you will be back with another that is even better.
So sad. It's a miracle Travis walked away and wasn't hurt worse. It's a tribute to you as a builder.
Gutted for you Landon and I hope Travis is healing up. As much as it sucks it's cool to see how attached you get to your race cars, I know not everyone is that way and a lot of people would try to hide that part so thanks for letting us see that side of you.
There is suppose to be a bar that you can use the top of your foot to pull the throttle back, Nobody to blame except that style pedal, I personally have never drove a late model that did not have that pull back bar on the pedal. Port city makes them and have been installed in every car I ever drove.
Not a single late model stock car in my 13 years of racing has it.

@@LandonHuffmanRacing Not a late model/mod/hobby stock in my 30 years that didn't have one, and why wouldn't you have one? Glad your buddy is okay but at least you now can see how important they are. You might be on to something about the floor pan or heat shield theory. I could see how mashing it could perhaps hang or wedge the bottom edge of the pedal to the floor. Shitty deal though my guy.
@@xtr3m3fLxIt sure looks to me like that's what happened. One of my cars, had (I built it all) an adjustable throttle stop. It worked loose, and the lower edge of the throttle pedal hung behind it, as I went into 1. I didn't have the toe pullback bracket on it either, so it was kind of a perfect storm. Needless to say, I redesigned and fixed that deathtrap mess afterwards. Racecars....things happen.
@@LandonHuffmanRacingMy first two didn't either. After one hung throttle, I redesigned my throttle pedal, stop, and linkage, and added the toe pullback bracket. It's easy and cheap, at least. Good luck in the CARS at Dominion this week🏁🏆👍

My friends race car modified he always had an L welded on the top of the pedal.
Cut the center section out and put it on a metric frame and make a pure stock for asphalt.
That is why I quit racing many years ago.I was doing it with my money and if I got caught up in someone else's deal I would be stressed out about the money to fix it.If I caused the wreck I was better about it but I started to think of money more than having fun so I stopped.

If he accelerated into the wall, something was probably wrong with the car. It's a shame you don't have video, it probably would have told the story.
I still don't understand why Travis was put in the car when you were winning with it. There has to be more to the background story. Very puzzling. Makes no sense.
The next 4 races in limited were for Travis to drive. This was his first test. I had a deal worked with him for a crate motor. They purchased my crate motor in exchange for several limited races.
Travis is a very blessed young man. This could have been so much worse. God must have greater plans for him ahead. Sorry you lost the car, but so glad Travis is as okay as he is.

Of course I’m pissed. But i don’t hold it against him. We don’t know what happened. I do know that nothing mechanical caused the problem, so yes it’s frustrating, but most importantly I’m happy my friend is okay and we will live to tell the story in 20 years

Landon, there is an ad on racing junk for a CARS tour rolling chassis. Kinston, N.C. with a new front clip that he says cost $3500. He is asking $4000 for the whole thing. Offer him $3000, tell him you are on the way to pick it up. Fresh Buzze rear end cost $1500. Car has lightweight hubs.

Why isn't there a toe strap on the gas pedal? I learned after I wrecked a car due to the throttle sticking to have a pedal with the toe strap. Never raced another one with out it..

Yep. That's what I said right after it happened. I think in this video, he nailed it. Looks like the pedal just hung in the floor heat shield insulation momentarily. But I digress...

Prayers up for Travis. Really sorry to hear about what happened. Francis was a hell of a car. Having been around racing and having built cars, I totally understand what you are going through. I feels like losing one of your kids in a way. You have a way with race cars that is just natural and that is a gift. I feel confident that you will find another Francis and go on to win more races.

Glad the driver is ok. A thought for you...not trying to be flip. Over my time as an owner, driver and builder, things got a lot better for my outlook when I stopped seeing them as "cars" and started seeing them as just a pile of pipe.. That chassis was laying dead in the weeds. There's 100 (or more} of 'em in a 3 state area. You kicked ass with junk more than once and I bet you can do it again. good luck

Prayers for Travis for a speedy recovery and RIP Frances. That could have gone a lot worse than it did and I’m glad that Travis is battered but alive. You’re right, cars are replaceable. People are not. Take pride in the fact that you built a very safe car that took majority of the impact. That is just a freak thing that happened. Doesn’t matter if you’re on the big tour or in the Weekly Racing Series, freak things can happen at any moment…

I really can tell that you are sad about this. I believe you have your own thoughts that you want to keep personal which you should. I’m glad Travis is OK. I enjoy watching him with iRacing. I think he does a great job, announcing and should continue to do just that. I hope you can find a way to replace Francis because it’s fun to watch you race, both divisions, actually all three divisions to include your cars tour late model.
Just got back in the country. Catching up. Travis needs a couple a shots, maybe a 12 pack, a doobie, and some poontang, heals ya up fast. Good job with the seat. Did the belts look ok? HANS device is a game changer. Just a machine, get another, put Travis back in it soon. Chin up Landon Huffman.

Its one thing when you do it its another when your letting a friend use your car and this happens. This is why id never want to drive in a friends car unless they could easily afford it. I couldnt imagine totaling a 60k+ car

Anyone who has ever drove a late model or a limited late model KNOWS that if you are really wheeling the car there ain't a lot of difference between I got IT...and IT"S GOT ME!!!. If you race em you will wreck em... not a matter of IF but just a matter of WHEN.. Tough deal, hope you can salvage the high dollar stuff like the engine block, trans and back end. Tough deal but just a fact of life at a short track ...
This is not the first time I have heard this. I think maybe you are in good company. Years ago Curtis Turner and Smokey hisself Yunick had the same problem. Curtis said "sompun broke". Smokey said- "you are too old to drive".. Needless to say, things did not go well for either guy and the 7/8th scale chevelle Curtis wrecked. Your boy broke your car- he should pay to fix it- pretty simple.

It wont turn, What he just nutted up , kept his foot in it and drove straight??? Go ask one of the Yates what it was like for Robert leaving Hampshire with a dead driver and what presumably was an engineering tolerance calc gone wrong as the cause
A cracked throttle body could have caused it . One of the butterflies will hang until you pound something, and sometimes it will pop back. You need to look at it under neon.
Same with an air cleaner or heat shield torqued up especially with those little Holly 2bbls, but since youve run it a few times prior, probably not unless you changed something or a shield came loose
... Jarzombak, Evans, Irwin, Petty, and literally a hundred others have been killed that way. . Let me tell ya its the scariest shit you will probably face in a race car next to fire. I had a cracked throttle body on a 4bbl SLM at a low banked 3/8 and I am lucky to be here buddy, Plain and simple I had no time literally NONE to get to the kill switch on the cross bar.

It is what it is.."just happened"..had a friend with a brand new Limited Late model..his gas pedal got stuck 1st time out..he was a track champion..and he was just practicing..he totally went over turn 1/2 wall..hit a tree..totally loss 5 laps on the car..

Geez, you're having a shit run of luck lately with damage (ok, I'm a bit behind but relatively lately). Frances was looking like being a real champion, sad to see her go. All the best to the team replacing this beauty, even though it won't be Frances taking future wins. But most of all, hope Travis and your dad are back to 100% as soon as possible. May your run of good luck start soon so you can enjoy it all and just concentrate on victory and improvements, with less time on repairs and rebuilds.
The "throttle hung because his right foot created too much pressure on the gas pedal." A "hung throttle" is one of the easiest things to identify. This was clearly driver inexperience. It's ok. He should just be bustin his hump to help the rebuild.
The throttle did NOT hang. The only thing hung was Travis. He can make it right by learning from the on track mistake, and by making it right by working overtime to correct the damage. All fixable.
noticed something at about 4:30 in the film, Y'all don't run a toe strap on the throttle to help If the throttle gets stuck for any reason. With a toe strap over the top of the accelerator pedal you can have your leg muscles help you get it unstuck. Yeah, it happened to us once at South Alabama Speedway. Had my buddy in the seat and she went airborne off of turn 1. he got the engine cutoff BUT we never found the bind. I KNOW the throttle was stuck because I could hear it rev when she left the ground, Never happened again but IF it had the toe strap would have helped immensely to pull that throttle closed and to get her WHOAED UP!!!
The chassis did its job. Driver walked away. I've totaled a couple in my days of owning and driving. Any bad wreck you can walk away from means the chassis has done its job

Oh no , man that sucks , that rig was hauling ass.
I hung the throttle at tricounty last year, and killed one of my cars. It was the end of the throttle linkage at the carb. The eyelet was sticking in a way that the spring wouldn't pull it back. I started running a super heavy spring on the back of the carb arm to the rear of the intake. Hate you guys lost a good car, glad Travis is OK
If you have any more bad luck, karma will have you winning the Daytona 500 next year lol
Just my opinion, from what the video shows, the foot pedal could very easily bound up on the floor pan. All it takes is one split second on corner entry to overshoot your marks and cause that. Really stinks still though. ☹
Please consider a brake line pressure kill switch for your next car. Assuming this car didn't have one, since it was not mentioned in this video.

I would suggest using a throttle pedal with a tie loop that way if the throttle sticks the driver can pull it back, I know some drivers don’t like the way they feel but it’s a great safety feature. Hopefully Travis will be better soon. You should take a piece of the car to make a trophy out of just to razz him a bit over the off season.

I've seen tire rubber get in the throttle linkage and cause it to hang. I would simply have mentioned that a throttle issue caused the wreck though without any speculation.
