Still hold my head in my hands that Anderson’s used a milkman combo for Mayer tones 🤣 I don’t think he’s ever used a milkman live, correct me if I’m wrong. He’s world renowned for using two rocks. The traditional clean would have been the perfect amp for his tones in that vid.
@@vincentbull Milkman Amps got famous because John posted a picture on his Instagram with one in his rig. I can't remember if it was in his Dead & Co rig. Nowadays he uses his Dumble and a Bandmaster I think.
It's crazy how good the NG-2 is. I've seen countless videos of people trying different fuzz to try to replicate the sound. Some come close but you can INSTANTLY tell that this is perfectly spot on.
Guys this is actually Mayer playing, cause tone is n the hands and it just can't be this close without John playing! Lol I wonder how many people will continue to argue tone is completely in the hands, cause you guys nailed this. Incredible playing as always Jake, never cease to amaze with your touch!
@@neoxtra2461 how? Do tell. I’m friends with both of these guys and clearly none of them took it that way. If anything it was a clear shot at the people saying tone is in the hands and you’ll never be able to replicate JM’s sound.
@@neoxtra2461 nah man, shut up, this guy knows what he’s talking about and knows more about Mayer tone and gear than Mayer probably does, his videos are great and the only reason there aren’t vids of him playing is because he’s waiting until he can give the best sound quality he can
Fantastic playing from Jake there! And Alex, great videography and also very kind of you to show off the pedals, with the settings too - a true gent. Love these vids.
Holy moly!! I love that fuzz and qtron sounds specially! Helluva setup man! And hey all you other poor guys, just crank your Fender style amps and you get pretty close to this. And for that crossroads fuzz sound: remember to use the middle pickup, crank the fuzz, guitar tone rolled almost down and crank that amp, then raise the guitar volume until you start to shiver, not full blast from the guitar. ;)
This is an awesome video. My fav was crossroads. It also proves that no matter it doesn't matter what rig you have, you can never sound exactly like someone else. Really good video, though. Top notch 👊
@@TheLondonGuitarist yes!! It really was. Gear matters a lot, imo, but I was leaning more towards the sense that gear will get you in the grey areas of the tone you want, but if you want to copy someone you will never sound exactly the same. JM can play thousands of guitars, and he will still sound like himself. You will never sound close to JM however, running a Les Paul with some Fuzz through a Marshall. JM sound (to me) is mainly TS as a boost to another clean drive, a Strat, and a Fender/similar amp. Cheers man! greeeeat content, seriously, so much quality in your vids! 👊👊
Listen to the 2009 Beacon Theater show where John was only using 2 of his Two Rock Sig’s, no Dumble, and then you’ll see just how spot on all the tones here are!!
When my rig is complete it will be a prs silver sky core model, ceristone Joyful Music, and pretty much these pedals except a Klon clone. If it sounds half this good then I’m happy
Yeah, we unfortunately didn't film the pedalboard, and because it was essentially an extended jam that I've edited down, it's hard to remember the exact combinations. It's mostly TS-10/Klon for gain though, Katana for boost, and then when more "exotic" pedals are used like the NG2 or Dhyana I've highlighted those.
That’s a great rig But it would’ve been Fantastic if you had noted what pedals were being used at certain periods... Please note for future vids. And keep up the impressive content, an overhead camshot would help your editing
Sounds beautiful! But if I had to be pedantic, I believe a Marshall blues breaker mk1 was used on the WTLI gig, instead of the Klon, but it’s a very fine difference in my opinion
I've not really compared a lot of pickups. My friend Tommy has, and he really rates the Ron Ellis pickups. He's played a Cruz BLK1 as well, so knows what they sound like!
He’s actually said in an interview with a Japanese magazine this month that he doesn’t sound like himself with some amps he uses, and he always finds his sound in the Two-Rocks/Dumbles/Fender amps. Interesting stuff though!
@@TheLondonGuitarist right of course within reason. I don’t think Mayer would sound like Mayer through some Orange amp with an Ibanez shredder But I think give the guy a Squire strat and a fender blues jr, you’re gonna know it’s him. He’s gonna sound more like him than any of us playing unicorn gear (we will just sound like ourselves with good tone lol)
It might seem like a lot of gear, but it’s really just the price of a nice car. I have a shitty car and nice gear. There’s nothing between me and that bloke driving the new mid-priced car. It’s just where you choose to spend the money.
Sorry but I don’t get why people want to sound like someone else... all that money just to be able to say “I sound like John Mayer now” wtf? Each to his own(I guess) the annoying thing is seeing how the corporates cash in on the dreams of the followers and push quality that should be standard into the Stratosphere. No doubt this guy is a nice player btw, but what does “He” sound like?
But what if you listen to a player and think "oh my, thats the sound that I've been trying to achieve in my head!" I think the reason that so many people identify with the tone of specific players is that it resonates so much with where they're trying to get with "their sound". I get that I've got a bit obsessed, but thats my thinking anyway.
Thing is most guitarist who claim they don't want to sound like someone else have garbage tone. That's why we try to get our sound as close to our favorite guitarist, once there, we develop our own sound, but from a solid foundation. Just like John Mayer who tried to emulate SRV, who tried to emulate Hendrix.
@@cesarcamacho2266 That’s a pretty broad statement and I sense a passive aggressive rebuttal at least. JM, SRV, JH, Jeff B, JP, AY, all had their identifiable tone and style and when interviewed all stressed the importance of having their own signature style and sound. Consequently you know them when you hear them. SRV was an amalgamation of all his different influences…
That crossroads tone is literally nailed on, one of his coolest tones ever imo
Sound like John Mayer BY busting the bank 🤩

A lot of people hate on John's Crossroads tone but that Pete Cornish pedal just satisfies me beyond belief. I love it.
