    My God, I can't imagine how long it must have taken you to film every minute detail of every step like this. To go to the trouble of placing the camera in such a position that it's almost as if our eyes are your eyes. KUDOS on a job well done, both to the truck and to the art and detail in which it was filmed. I thank you for parts of this video that inspire me to make some changes inside my cab as well.

    I would recommend checking the seat on the J-shifter if it feels a little wiggly... mine was mostly dissolved, on my '99
    Also, some nice/cheap upgrades: metal exterior door handles (plastic ones kept breaking every 1-2 yrs) and honda windshield sprayers

      Thanks for the recommendations. I did change the bushings on the automatic floor shifter. They were in pretty bad shape and my shifter was not tight. It was a big improvement. I changed the bushings in the 2nd or 3rd video.

      Oh, I meant the J-shifter for the 2H/4H/4L. The lever usually sits on a plastic cup and once it starts to crumble, the pieces can fall into the transfer case.
      Yeah, I'm super jealous of that restoration job. Where did you send out your belts to get refurbished/rebuilt?

      OK I had the 4x4 shifter out when I replaced the carpet. It is tight. I don't think the previous owner used the 4 wheel drive much because when I inspected the locking hub they were like new.

    Nice job. I've been restoring a 2000 Taco 2wheel drive with the 5vz and about 240k miles on the odo for the past year. I've got the 60/40 split bench seat and have been thinking about just pulling it all all together and replacing with something aftermarket. The previous owners went all caveman on the doors and broke clips that hold the door handle guide rods and the clips that hold the door panel on were broken. As well the exterior door handles were shot and then interior armrest was cracked to pieces. I've got the 'Oak' interior which was a far less popular brown color than the grey and thus harder to find interior parts for. So, I had to settle for a grey armrest on a brown door. I may or may not wrap it in some brown vinyl at some point. But I'm not OCD and appreciate an armrest that doesn't cut up my elbow rather than doesn't match the color. At some point I'll need to take apart my instrument cluster as I got a little dead bug laying on its back in the bottom of the cluster. Also, I've got a bad ground to the cluster as sometimes when I hit a bump the cluster briefly loses power.
    Also, looks like your idle speed is good which suggests you don't have any vacuum leaks. Though, my guess is your throttle body is sealed up with a nice ring of dirt around the edge of the throttle bore plate. Unless the throttle body as been replaced at some point, these old Toyota's wear out the throttle plate and the only thing holding vacuum is a layer of junk that builds up on the inside of the bore. If/when you clean your engine and take off the air cleaner snorkel, DO NOT CLEAN the dirt inside the throttle body, or you will start having idle speed issues. If you want to fix your throttle body without having to buy a new one, there is a company in Florida called, Maxbore.com (not affiliated), that can machine out the bore, replace the plate, rebuild the throttle shaft linkage with spacer washer to prevent further wear and tear of the plate. It only runs about $180 which is far cheaper than the $400-500 Toyota wants for a new one. Though you do need to ship your throttle body to them with about 7-10 day turn around.
    Another thing to check on is to remove the inspection cover to the torque converter and look to see if the drive plate (flex plate) is cracked.

      Thanks very much for the information. My taco does have a rough idle issue when the brakes are applied and in drive like at a stop light. It starts good cold but has a warm start issue. I was hoping when I do the tune up a few videos from now that that will clear up the issue. I will keep in mind that the throttle body may be having the issue that you described. I will also check the flex plate since you suggested it and I did not know that that was an issue. The flex plate might have something to do with the rough idle when in drive also. Thanks for the tip. Good luck with your project.

      @@4x4mikey Yea, I subbed to keep an eye on your build. It's a fun and easy truck to work on, great for shade tree mechanics.

      Thanks. I still have work to do on this truck. I plan on having two more videos on the Tacoma.

    It’s better if you clean and repaint the shifter frame which is rusty.

    Pretty funny. I just did a lot of the same things to my truck. I bought a pretty rough 99 and have been scavenging interior parts. It’s almost perfect except……I gotta know where you found that interior trim paint? Yours looks the same as mine. Moon mist I believe. Also I love the fact you’re using factory parts 👍🏼

      The paint is from autozone. There were two choices a light grey and charcoal grey. The charcoal grey matched the best but it is a little light.

    Man, that's a short crank time on startup! I wish mine did that. Not sure if yours is the 5VZ or the 3RZ though. Nice work!

    • @4x4mikey
      @4x4mikey  Год назад +1

      Mine is the 3rz. 2.7 liter 4 cylinder. That was a cold start. The truck does take alot longer to start when warm. I am not sure what is causing the long warm start but when I make the video of the engine clean and tune up I was going to ask the fans of the video if there are any 3rz experts that can help me trouble shoot the warm start issue. Maybe someone that reads these comments can reply to your cold start issue. Good luck and If you find out what is causing the cold start problem let me know.

    Nice job 😅 I did most of this to my red 95 taco but you take it a step further. Where did you get the carpet from? It’s a great match.

    • @4x4mikey
      @4x4mikey  Год назад +1

      The carpet is from Stock Interiors. No matter what retailer you buy the carpet from it will most likely be manufactured by auto custom carpets.

  • @brown5252

    Why carpet instead of the vinyl? Since it's a 4x4.

    • @4x4mikey
      @4x4mikey  Год назад +1

      That is a good question. Vinyl would be a better option if I was using the truck in the mud but I will mostly be using the truck to run errands around town.
