what does transcribe actually mean? I’ve seen videos saying it was transposing certain phrases but on other vids I see they’re saying it’s writing down the heard notes on note. please let me know.
It means to learn a phrase or a longer piece of music BY EAR, so that you can hear it and internalize in your head, and then play on your instrument. Learn by singing it first. It will also allow you to transpose to different keys on the spot since you know the melody and intervals
+Isingthe80s It means to notate the music - to write down on staff paper what is being sung or played. It's a wonderful ear training tool for musicians
+Jazz at Lincoln Center's JAZZ ACADEMY Thanks so much! I love to sing jazz, but I don't know how to write music. I am taking some lessons locally now, so I hope to learn. I hope they can teach this old dog some new tricks!
great question, transcription is not just listening to a recording and writing down the notes that are being played it is listening to and writing down HOW it was played in other words things like dynamics ( how soft or loud ) articulation ( for a wind instrument play for example Tongued or slurred notes ) vibrato and the speed of the vibrato ,the accents( weight behind the note ) or bending a note ect. so that the music sounds and feels exactly like it was being sung or played on the recording so you can emulate the singer or player and makes some of their sound a part of yours . If you just write the notes it won't sound like they did on the recording hope that helps
I really liked how they conversed about the subject.
I thought it was off topic almost the whole time.
Informative. Thanks.

Talk about unwritable rhythms, transcribing Sarah Vaughan singing a ballad for me was like ummmmm...uhhh
