- A clip from our last lionfish hunt.
The reef is running rampant with invasive lionfish. With the trusty Lionator pole spear in hand, we are on a mission to remove them one by one! While diving the Salty Locs crew runs into a "gang" of lionfish on this St. Croix reef.
Lionfish are a non-native species that have invaded the waters of the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. They have no natural predators in these waters and have been reproducing at alarming rates, which has led to a population explosion. This has had a negative impact on the ecosystem and has put native fish species at risk.
Lionfish are voracious predators and they have a very high reproductive rate. They can lay up to 30,000 eggs every four days and they can eat up to half their own body weight in a single meal. This means that they can quickly deplete the food supply of native fish species and outcompete them for resources. They have also been known to eat the eggs and young of other fish species, which can further reduce the population of native fish.
Because of their negative impact on the ecosystem, it is important for scuba divers to hunt lionfish. By removing them from the water, divers can help to reduce their population and protect the native fish species. In addition, many divers find hunting lionfish to be a fun and exciting challenge.
However, it is important for divers to be careful when hunting lionfish. They have venomous spines that can cause painful stings, so it is important to handle them with care. Divers should also be sure to properly dispose of the lionfish they catch in order to prevent them from being eaten by other fish and continuing to reproduce.

Did you ever find that last lion?!!!! Great video, you are a Lionfish assassin 🤙🏼
Haha I know right! I’m usually able to find them but unfortunately that one got away!!
Great video, vibrant colors. Did you have the Red or Magenta filter attached ?
Thank you Barry, no filter attached! This video is from the GoPro 12, I usually shoot in flat color and then do the color correction on the computer. Still trying to perfect it, I feel like the background is a little on the purple side. lol
It's a good video, I too recently purchased the GoPro12 and am learning the adjustments. Good luck 🙂@@SaltyLocs
