Hi guys, thanks for having me be a part of this! One correction, Alain and Chris played the guitars on Euphoria Morning which came out.. in 2000 or 2001. I wasn’t in the picture til 2007! :) I did record with Chris, and of course toured but all those killer guitars/tones/parts on Euphoria, many of which I learned for tour, were Alain and Chris. Rock on dudes! 🤟
So what does ‘AC don’t pull’ mean?
@@PMiller3425 Try it backwards ;) "Don't pull AC" = Don't pull the power out!
See and that right there is why we LOVE YA PETE.
Cool honesty. That's called integrity kids.
I did wonder about that. Also - the Guitars are very Cornell / Thayil. Too rough round the edges to be Pete’s work.
Pete: A supercomputer of tone and wonder
Colin: Gnarliest pedal award goes to you (Ibanez FL9)
RJ: The Arnold Schwarzenegger of boards
Rhett: A tone snob's wet dream
Steve: The mojo is palpable
Me: Proof that a clean room adds at least 12% more tone
P.S. My floors are real oak you guys know my position on tonewood c'mon
Yea Tyler that laminate has no sustain. U gotta go solid board floors for the best frequency response. Also I think Colin's whole board is pretty gnarly. But if ur HM-2 doesn't look like that you've made some poor life decisions
Now you can tell Bethany "see how jealous those guys are of my room?"
You should try solid mahogany (with a maple cap).
Nah, go for ebony wood
Great setup my man
I sent old rig pics. I’m just running through a Rockman X100 now. #MarieKondoYourRig
😂😂😂
Youre one of the best guitarists on the interwebs dude. Love what you do man.
I want your signature Mythos so bad, what a great pedal package. Your playing is killer, love your videos 🤘
LOL!🙂🙃🙂🙃🙂🙃
from Chad to even more Chad
After a long week at his dental practice, Rhett likes to bring this ‘small travel version’ of his board to worship band practice.
Rhett is a huge dork. He reminds me of that kid you introduced to a band and the next week he tries to tell you everything about your favorite band but most of the info is nonsense he found on the internet.
@@smelltheglove2038 Im glad im not the only one who gets vibes about Rhett Shull aka Cosmo Kramer of youtube
@@Halliday7895 he has this vibe of newfound pretentiousness. Like someone who has just fancied themselves a wine connoisseur last week or something like that.
@@Halliday7895 I don’t know if that made sense… I’m trying to put it into words. I kinda liked “newfound pretentiousness”.

Underated chat comment that i saw: "Rhett's rig is like an onion, it has layers and makes me cry" -Ched Leicester
Rhett’s board looks like he wants to find some holy grail secret of rock n roll but ends up spending his money on gear instead of drugs 🤣🤣
Eh, gear is a better investment anyway. Hard to resell your used drugs after you decide you prefer something else.
Based comment
Yeah but how much amazing raw material can you come with on gobs of life sustaining drugs……that’s how write all my tunes. A pile of Spice and my rig…
I used to like Rhett's videos, but he annoys the living shit out of me now.
The "happy kid's smile" on Josh face when he's trying to sound metal is my favourite moment here.
Now we need a vid of these 6 guys each rating a JHS pedal.
Whenever I watch a JHS video, I press like before I even watch it because I know its gonna rock
Rhett's rig is the guy at the gym who wants to be seen working out and always glances at the mirror when he walks by hahaha! Great stream.
I'm repeating myself - but Nick is an EXCELLENT drummer!
Josh, your bass player just created the name for your next pedal: The Flaser!
Colin Scott is the man. He's awesome at explaining the science behind gear in an engaging and truly interesting way. Also dig his goofy humor
Waddy Wachtel played guitar on Edge Of Seventeen and it's a thing of beauty!
I love that Boss actually did release a Waza HM-2 just a couple months after this.
I bought it 2 hours after Kennys in Glasgow received one.
It’s my favorite pedal.
Pete Thorn may be the coolest man on RUclips. And such a kind and encouraging teacher.
Bummed I missed this live! When I saw R.J. Ronquillo on the pedal board I got super excited!
Colin's board rates Pegasus Llama. You guys should be rating in Cheese Balls. It's food and episode relevant. RJ's board is what Neil Peart would have used if he played guitar.
Absolutely agree on talking heads. Stop making sense show has some amazing rhythm. Even that acoustic psycho killer opener with just David Byrne. And then countless live shows from the Grateful Dead's Bob Weir.. especially the entire decade of the 70s. Insanely good. The whole band's rhythm section is firing in 77-78, go back to 1972-1974 for very unique rhythm work paired with Jerry Garcia's lead. It's incredible. I'll also throw in Hunter Brown from STS9.. his live use of the wah pedal is the pure funk. He took inspiration from the early James Brown vibe and then totally turned it on its head. He stole it and now owns it! For those sounds I would check out live shows from 2005-2007. Not that the other years aren't good, but a good starting place.
Watched a documentary on Talking Heads recently where D. Byrne said that they tried to mimic Fela Kuti, failed, and came up with something totally different in the process when they made I Zimba.
Listen to their live anthology "The Name of This Band is the Talking Heads," it goes through their first radio appearance right through the "Remain In Light" tour and the evolution of their live sound is absolutely remarkable.
On a non-guitar pedal related note, Nick's snare is sounding particularly sweet in this video - nice and warm!
Crispy!
Some of the best mic'ed drums on the tube...
Gotta be Colour Box on that bad boi
Joke’s on you. Tyler’s studio is just a printed shower curtain.
DAMN, I saw this too late!! I never get free anything for my whole life and I’m 70...yeah born in 1950!!!😎
"All is fair in tone, and war" Best. Quote. Ever.
After watching this I want the auto wah and that White OD. And that Collins (?) guitar.
Can't afford to watch this anymore.
GREAT PLAYING!
That closing jam was truth. Gave me an emotion.
I agree
nice outro
I laughed out loud at Josh picking the phaser on Pete T’s spaceship. 👍🏼
What I love about Ronquillo’s pedalboard is the fact that he has two and still need to put one more pedal on the floor. This is 2N+1!
I pretty much thought the exact same thing! There is never enough room.
"The Sun Smells Too Loud". Love it.
Rhett's board's salad wasn't quite right and it would like to speak to the manager.
Josh’s is playing and timing is incredible.
The jam on Tyler's pedal was awesome definitely my favorite pedal of the lot you guys showed thanks for the plug lol
I came here hoping to hear Nick mention 'Hot Takes', and this did not disappoint.
RJ’s board is what happens when you go to the taco stand hungry and order one of everything, except for the al pastor tacos...you order four.
The Al Pastor is the Fuzz right? Haha
Back in the earliest 80s, when i was but a yute, i read a biography about Jimi Hendrix. In it was an account of an episode where Jimi's 'man bits' were being cast in plaster for some purpose i cannot recall. But, i do specifically remember that they referred to his... parts... as his "rig." So, whenever anyone now says they wanna 'get a look at some dude's "rig,"' i kinda giggle a bit, on the inside.
*"He does something cool with his rig."* - That's what _she_ said / Addison
Yeah, there was some crazy-art-ist that was in 'the scene' at that time, making moulds of everyones famous "rigs". What a great time to be alive! lol
Oh, The Plaster Caster, yeah, mmm. Dreams... do come true, I guess. The lady had gobs, I mean, goals.
@@leoquesto9183 "Plaster Caster"... Amazing. Ya know, using the word 'rig' from time to time, may be a good filter of sorts, to disclose just what kind of company one's in. Of course context is everything, but yeah... Musician, oil company employee, junkies, latex-junk-moulder(s)... They're all out there! 😂
Hue Morris True that. But I can feel it deep in my feels that "Plaster Caster" is the Jimi fuzz that Josh will make in the future, surely.
@@leoquesto9183 I see the truth of it.😳
Rhythm guitar: Johnny Marr, The Smiths
True. And the sister from Heart if we're talking rock. But, 311's second album all the way through. Rock/reggae rhythm doesn't get better than that to get your head bobbin.
Malcolm Young anyone?
Definitely! His arpeggiated chord melodies that combine rhythm and lead playing is really masterful.
Steve Cropper?
Rhett's looks like a dentist plays with a bunch of lawyers
Love the ending jam. Well done guys! Beautifully done. I’m gonna hit one of these lives and get a box strings darn it!!
Cheers chaps, great show, great jams and a roast of great body and depth, with a hint of citrus and a biscuity finish ... marvelous.
Came here for the rigs, stayed for the good time banter amongst the JHS crew🎉
Lab Series amps are very kewl! It was integral to Ty Tabor’s tone for several King’s X albums. He now lives in KC. There should be an episode with Ty! A pedal collab would be awesome too!
Really late to this, but please.... His tone on Gretchen is my favourite guitar sound to this day.
I know it's old-school, but I love John Fogerty's rhythm playing in Creedence Clearwater Revival and later. He is so in the pocket and sometimes the rhythm is so good that for the 2nd guitar solo he just plays a rhythm part (Down On the Corner).
Really glad to see the HM-2 in this episode! To get the true Entombed/Dismember etc. Swedish death metal sound you need to put the HM-2 in front of an already distorted signal, like a natural high-gain amp channel or another distortion pedal. It takes it from chunky chug to absolute chainsaw.
That last jam was one of the best pieces you guys have ever played, and judging by that smile, I think Josh knew it too 1:04:08
Y’all would seriously be a great band to see live. Y’all’s jams are so tight and I feel it.
Seeing this on replay. I love the guitar sound in general. I'm presuming it's the amp. We "need" to have a complete episode on the Sovtek amps!!! Just sayin'
Thanks guys, I laughed so hard. I love that you show equal parts reverence and irreverence in equal measure. As always, some great jams.
All my fav RUclipsrs on one show. Awesome.
'I'm a little jealous' at 25:30, priceless Josh. Great ep. Thanks for the wholesome goodness.
"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" I gotchu guys
My favorite rhythm guitarist is my all around favorite player: Steve Cropper of Booker T. and the MGs. Grooves for miles.
The Phase 95 is a great pedal. It's on my board. Ihad a Phase 45 back in the 70's and 80's. It was great and was the main reason I bought the 95. Nice to see 2 of my pedals on Pete's board. I feel better about myself now.
Josh, I hope you get French toast soon. Both the Dan electro pedal and the surprisingly versatile breakfast food that should be eaten for dinner.
So much star power! Production value on this one is thru tha roof!!
This comment is from the pedal winners MOM...Joryn has a caustic wit and adds humor to any situation! Besides being a top tier musician he adds an entertainment factor to each encounter! He is a genuinely good human being!
You know what would be worth the price of admission? Music is Win trying to pick a Centaur out of all the clones that Josh has.
that HM-2 through the collings semi-hollow is nasty, I love it!.
Yeah it was really well composed. Josh can into metal!
Loved the carmel coated irony/sarcastic banter and the sweet jams. Especially that last one. Thanks for your pedals, talents, dry wit and entertainment during these times. Rock on!!! You guys are the dry aged prime rib rating on the steak scale.
KMac
Thank you so much guys. That was so much fun.
Came for the pedal reviews, stayed for the music at the end. 10/10 would watch again (the last 3 minutes or so at least).
Josh, your jam on samurai guitarist's pedal was epic. I'd put that on my playlist if it were a song.
A really good example of rhythm and lead guitarists are Nick and Albert from the Strokes, they alternate roles a lot, and show good examples of polyphonics where one plays higher notes and lower notes that compliment
Pedal rating system (uncool to cool)
Higher the number the more uncool you are
1. Knob rating - is proportional to the average knobs per pedal - High number means you’re a knob (uncool)
2. Snob rating - Is proportional to the average cost per pedal - High is uncool - original Klon would rate a 10 (uncool)
3. Boring rating - unique sounding pedals are required to achieve a low rating or a unique pedal combination or weird signal chain structure eg Miku has low rating, as does stacking 6 flangers etc
4. Clone Rating - Use of original pedals scores high, use of clones or cheap pedals that sound close are much cooler. If they are plastic that’s insanely cool.
PS If you paid someone to build your board you need to take a good hard look a yourself, that money could have made hundreds of buskers happy especially as you didn’t give me your old board. Uncool as Brett Boils
I normally hate these kinds of things but I not only loved this one you used some of my own favorites on your own board, namely the HM2 which I use in a rock and roll setting (set with all the knobs up of course). Anyway, I appreciate just the positive tone of these videos and the company as a brand, my JHS pedal collection is growing.
'Do we have a Jan Ray?' Josh, thinking about the wall of Timmys he likely has behind him... 'uh... yeah'
Ha, I noticed that as well, that is the first time I've seen Josh show a little hate towards a pedal.
What’s a Timmy ?
@@Bluesbreaker-uf8ti yeah, he did his very best of making a statement by not making a statement. Classy
@@anthonyburke223 do you even shower?
@@MrKulturembargo Lol
I love these live shows! Excellent work as usual, gents!
This was another great episode. My favorite rig is Music is Win. Great looking rig with great pedals. Not too big, not too small either. Most importantly not trying to look complicated in a way with big pedals or rigs. Samurai Guitarist and Colin Scott also had nice rigs.
You have the most amazing feel for just how a pedal should be used! Btw like the live thing !
I missed the live because of stupid work, but my scathing review of Rhett's board would have been, "It's not a pedalboard; it's a product placement for Strymon."
You need a "Mute Your Mic" t-shirt in the JHS store.
"The Girl From Ipanema" chord changes in the beginning (A section only). I love it. Really enjoy your videos!
The jam with the screamer was so on point
Also I stared dying when Josh said “Is that drip?”
We're gonna get flagged, we'll have to call Rick Beato :D :D :D
Hadn't noticed Pete played on the first Cornell album. That's probably my singular "desert island disc" for guitar-based music. So many amazing sounds.
I watched the whole video. The jam bits were the best part of the video but seriously, I need to get a live!
Best Rhythm Guitarist: Pete Townshend comes to mind because his rhythm playing is exceptional and he doesnt do much lead at all. Whereas, Hendrix, John Mayer, Jimmy Page, etc are fantastic rhythm players but they are also known for their lead playing.
Hell yeah!!! Josh on a death metal pedal. The Rock says: Fiiiiinallyyyyy!
Nick's sweater is the definition of class! An intersection of cultures clashing perfectly together.
East Bay Ray from Dead Kennedys used a Heavy Metal pedal (and an old tape echo). I jammed with him in 1986 when he was trying to start another band when DKs were falling apart the first time. I though it was pretty fun that the key to one of the biggest punk rock bands guitar player used a Heavy Metal pedal. Must have not been on all their albums though because the pedal came out in 1983 and a lot of their best albums were behind them. It sounded just like his playing on the DK albums in my living room live though.
Josh: *says RJ's rig is braggy*
screen shifts to Josh in front of 15,000 worth of pedals.
That's all you think is on that wall? Really? 15,000? Which of the shelves would add up the that low of an amount?
@@tafilmmaker In retrospect I may have horribly underestimated the value of that single wall lmao
I thought exactly the same.
Pete's an EVH guy. Of course you gotta have that orange phase pedal!
If the phrase "mud butt" was a pedal board it would be Rhetts. Beato was whipping him with that string right before that picture was taken.
Euphoria Morning is one of my favorite records. Follow My Way, Moonchild & Steel Rain are personal standouts. Love the show, gentlemen!😎🎸🇺🇸
Great playing Josh! I always like your jams.
It’s hard to be scathing on anyone’s board. I guess you could give Rhett the Felix Unger award for annoyingly tidy :) great stuff all around
The correct answer for the GOAT at rhythm guitarist might just be the inimitable Jamie West-Oram of The Fixx. Those parts are perfect, tone is dialed in, and he’s so deep in the pocket he IS the pocket
Josh has got to learn some Swedish Death Metal riffs man.
Man, that source audio spectrum rocked the house!
These video ideas are AWESOME. BTW got my first JHS pedal...JHS Crayon.
I'm officially part of the club.
Alain Johannes played on and co-produced 'Euphoria morning'.
Regardless it's an amazing, amazing record !! I was lucky enough to see that tour 🙋♂️
I like to think that the tiny violin laying around Josh's board is an homage to the Bunnel Heavy Metal violin Distortion, and a hint of the Violin exclusive pedal design he's working on secretly
I am pleasantly surprised by Tyler Larson's board.
Man, and my friends say my board is complicated. Pete is the fucking man.
I know I'm late but Rhett's board sorta reminds me of like a darkish brown Ford LTD!!!
"I'm always thinking about the curve and the depth."
Nope. Thats waddy Wachtel that played on Stevie nicks albums. Dude is an amazing guitarist and a card carrying member of the wrecking crew.
Ah yes couldn't think of his name when commenting.....lol funny cool thing too he hates pedals Guitar into amp guy
You can tell these guys jam all the time.
Yes but it wouldn’t hurt if they practice some more...
The end jam was awesome! Right in the feelz!!!
I cant stop wacht this show, I think maybe I have issues x), excelent after lunch while working, greetings from chile
