At my local comic store, they put the comics in a nice plastic wrapping so they stay crisp in the store and don't get damaged

Ever since I started reading comics, it's always been through Comixology. I live in a tiny city in Mexico. There are NO comicbook stores here. Not even the newspaper stands sell comics. So for me, that's the only way I can read anything comicbook related.
I usually have my comic books reserved at my comics shop and they all come in plastic sleeves, so they never actually touch the pile on the stand.
As I understood it the teachers were doing it so they could get their bonuses.

Dear Grace, I'm curious to know what you think regarding this November's two competing superhero films: Justice League and Thor Ragnorok. Both films look great, but which one do you think will come out on top at the box office? I've heard arguments going both ways. Will the great reviews of Wonder Woman and the fresh aspect of Justice League be able to overtake Thor Ragnarok this November despite poor critical reception for prior DCEU installments or will Thor Ragnarok be able to do SIGNIFICANTLY better than previous Thor installments due to the inclusion of Hulk, Doctor Strange, and Hela, to win the day? Brandon Chambers justice league will definitely make more money as it's a big team up movie, where's Thor's movie is just a couple of secondary/tertiary level characters(not Iron Man or Captain America). Especially with the hype and newfound resurgence from Wonder Woman.
thor ragnarok comes out at the end of october if im not mistaken and justice league is november 17 so i wouldn't really call them competing as by the time justice league comes out thor ragnarok will already be on its second or third week
and for who will make more at this point all depends on critical response of the films

What's with the word *significant* being either in quotation or in all caps when attached to anything DCEU, particularly Justice League, nowadays? I don't get it.
Comic book stores are really easy to find where I live (Brussels), that might be because Belgium is know for comics strips like Tintin and all that. I don't go often to the stores but when I do it's always wonderful to grab them fresh and new! But I understand the practical aspect of going digital.
I love digital comics via Comixology for the Guided View, so much fun, big bright colorful panels, and it becomes a more cinematic experience, the way the panels advance and reveal themselves. And I like how you can actually be surprised by the Big Reveal panels, rather than having it catch your eye out of sequence, as can happen in the traditional paper versions. All that said, I do still buy some paper comics, but to avoid the Footprint Debacle, I have my local store pull my weekly List, which they do every Wednesday, and those are kept neatly behind the counter in my personal file folder, away from dirty stomping hooves.

I feel so lucky to have an awesome comicbook store. Always a great experience to visit and chat about upcoming books, storycrafting and games. I prob go digital if I didn't have such a nice place to visit everyweek. Bourke Street, Melbourne ftw!
As a public educator I will be very interested in how they pull off Wrong Answer. I think it's an important film because of what standardized testing has done to the education system.
If it weren't too late, I would have absolutely loved Zhang Ziyi for live action Mulan. I'm glad to see some appreciation for her.
I hope Wonder Woman does an amazing second weekend. I want DC to make Wonder Woman more important and an equal in the trinity. I just want them to see that characters not in the batfamily can work and deserve attention
Grace, you just walk to the counter givr the dirty comic book to the cashier and get a crisp one from the shelf. That's all you gotta do instead of having such an emotional reaction to it.
The only reason I read comics digitally is because I live in Europe and only very little comics are published here in the first place, and then the next store I could buy them is an hour long drive away from me or I would have to pay extra shipping costs. No thanks.
Thanks for pointing out the lack of Asian stars in American films. I'm happy Zhang Ziyi is getting at least some exposure with these films. She is underrated and deserves to be seen more often. Go Zhang Ziyi!
Hi Grace, thanks a lot for answering my question! In the store I go, there are a lot of people who also go to BUY comics, and they are very respectful with the comics. But I was going some years ago to a different store, and I really had a very bad experience, that´s why I changed (they didn´t attend me like I expected). But I guess that I really like the paper :D even with books. And yeah, I love having them in my shelves and look at them sometimes.
I am so torn. I want Wonder Woman to have a smash 2nd weekend, and I also want The Mummy to be huge. I think I will watch both this weekend

Sometimes my comic book store doesnt even have the comics when they're supposed to be on shelves 🤦🏽 smh .
I've been digital for years, my town has never had a comic book store and so my options for comics were the library with it's pitiful selection or waiting for stuff to be delivered. Interestingly with books I mostly go digital as well but not with heavy literature that requires a really high level of concentration as the devices I read on are too distracting.

I wanted to quickly say something about going digital. I did it when the new 52's came out years ago now. I was that person who wanted the more obscure titles like "Storm Watch" and the other major ones. I hated going to my store and they were sold out quickier then the store opened.
I know I could have made a pull box but I always through that was annoying because I want to flip through them first. Sometime they would come out and art may not be good or so on.
So I said to myself I'm a digital self published comic artist. Why not purchase them that way. Since then I never looked back.

I think digital stores like Comixology are just the best way to go when reading comics, all you need is an Internet connection and enough space in your device. It's even more convenient here in Costa Rica, where comic book stores are extremely rare and they often don't have current books.

Great viewer question. Boy, Grace, you've really had to endure some rude people in your area. I'm sorry to hear some jerk did that to your comic. What turned me off one comic shop in my area was the total opposite problem, actually. I hadn't been reading comics in awhile because my stack of indies got crushed by the '96 crash and some other factors. On account of the films and passionate DC and Marvel people like you, I wandered into a local shop just to see if they're was anything I'd like to try. Every last comic was in a sleeve. All of them. I was afraid to touch them. I didn't want to buy a comic I didn't like; I couldn't sample a page or two to see if I liked it. I didn't feel welcome in there, either. It was as though if you hadn't been following these books all your life, you weren't supposed to be there. So I left. I understand your point about browsing entirely, but the other extreme can be just as bad for business. Now that lovely people like yourself have suggested DC and Marvel reads, I might split the difference by purchasing a physical compilation book. That's how I caught up with Elfquest, an indie series that had been running for several years before I got into it. This was the 1990s when going digital wasn't an option yet. I tried Marvel's app once. Liked the story OK, but the experience on my phone was a bit cold. Perhaps I'd feel differently if I tried it again. Something about having to tap the screen to get the text boxes to come up, the lack of the paper's scent. Does save on trees and space, though. Whether I do digital or physical, you've helped peak my interest in the medium again, and I thank you. One of these days I plan to read Wonder Woman Rebirth, Miles Morales, etc. Best.
I actually just started reading comics in the past two months. I am reading Greg Rucka's Wonder Woman right now but just purchased Outcast by Robert Kirkman and Wonder Woman '77 (cause I'm on a Wonder Woman high right now and it looked quirky). I am fully digital but what really got me into comics was my dad. He's a quiet guy so this became a great growing point for us. When we were moving he found his box of old comics and we sat down and looked at all the covers and let me leaf through them. It was really great, so between your recommendation and his influences I have grown to love comics
I don´t buy digital comics for several reasons.
1. I have a nice big store where I go and I´m always treated well; they know me already as a regular customer.
2. I downloaded the DC app (since I only buy DC) and gave it a try. Not only I dislike how uncomfortable it is to read but there´s also no real big difference in prices from a physical copy.
If the time comes when these things changes then I´ll change.
And if you want people sign books they can't do it digitally to real books in hand

Just bought a new tablet and for fun singed in for DC app and found the first superhero comic book I ever read in 198(whatever). The New Teen Titans 21, I believe is the first appearance of Brother Blood. It was great to relive the first time situation. I got say, I'm hooked. The panel changes makes it very fun and prevent that forward pic that we all do.
Win or lose my vote goes to Wonder Woman all the way. The mummy trailers alone was meh at best. So I'm not surprised, it reviews are lukewarm. Mom and I are going to Wonder Woman this Saturday. :D
I tried reading digitally but don't really like reading from my phone or a tablet, tablets are heaver & even with my 11in screen I find I have to zoom in a lot on text, but with books I don't have that problem, I've also gone to trade reading because it's cheaper and many comics are meant to be read in a trade.

Oh and, Grace, that story about transitioning your comic collecting to digital is so interesting! I also had a bad experience with my long-time comic shop that lead to my own switch. I have always had a pull list at the same quaint comic shop for 7 years, however sometimes, as you so rightly said, they're a bit out of the way, life gets in your way further, and so I didn't visit my store for a couple of months.
This left a stack of comics worth probably around £80 behind the counter which, understandably, the owner wanted in his pocket instead of stagnating in comics that are losing market value. But instead of just calling me, a very loyal customer, to remind me again that maybe I should pay him a visit, the owner simply put my comics back on the shelf, so when I eventually went to pick them up and give him the £80, hardly any of my comics were still available.
I just believe that that kind of attitude is awful towards a long-time, loyal customer that the store KNOWS will come and pick up their stack, even if they are delayed. To not only not call me, but to actively punish me for having a life outside of driving forty minutes to pick them up was a huge slap to the face after years of service. So, yeah, digital for me.
Digital comics all the way, but I do miss holding them in my hands. I sometimes order a hard copy if it's something I really liked. Hard habit to break lol

In regards to your story about going digital with comics, you reminded me of myself when it comes to DVD/Blu-Rays. I collect them, have been collecting them for years. I always go for the DVD in the middle of the row cause it's the one in the best collection. And it's upsetting because since everything is becoming digital now, more and more it seems like physical DVDs and Blu-Rays are becoming obsolete. But I just refuse to go digital, I love my copies. xD Also coming from the guy who still buys physical copies of CDs.

The comic book store in my city is pretty neat, they ceep a lot of the books in plastic and put one in the front for you to look at. They are also really nice. I don't buy physical comic books anymore though, mainly because I have no where to put them. My apartment is kind of small.

When I saw recent King Arthur movie, I instantly recognized Annabelle Wallis from all The Mummy trailers! She's very pretty but a dead ringer for another actress whose name escapes me right now LOL
I also recognized the actress who plays Lena Luthor on TV's Supergirl show. She has a small role in King Arthur too!

I FEEL YOU 👏 sometime it's a nightmare trying to find a really nice comic book store. My comic book going experience was so bad. That I end up going to Sherman Oaks California to buy my comic books now!! LOL and I live in Los Angeles. Also I have been dancing with the idea of going digital.
I also went to a Comic Bookstore in Superman Oaks before I moved up north. I was a serious collector in my 20s and had many long boxes of comics. I no longer wish to live with boxes of comic books and have gone digital. I also buy digital books and magazines. I do sometimes buy comics at a store to talk to the staff and other customers for the fun of it
The only way to be sure of getting pristine comics these days, is to get the pull list service. Any decent comic shop should offer this service these days. If you're just pulling off the wall, yea, you're likely to get heavily looked over, possibly damaged, copies - not to mention you might not find what you're looking for at all - with circulation numbers being as low as they are nowadays, and comic publishers for the most not allowing returns of unsold comics, most comic shops are conservative with their order numbers, and so many things sell out.
I will never go digital with comics there are not worth anything how is creator and artist sign something if it's in your tablet on laptop unless someone can say they have classic comics in digital I will always buy real books WWE, I have fantastic four 48,49 in box silver age first appearance of bishop and gambit signed books

Grace, I love digital comics. I especially love the Guided View setting in Comixology (and Kindle) that allows you to go from panel to panel rather than page to page. I'm curious, since you are a much more hardcore comic fan than myself, do you use the Guided View feature as well or do you prefer to see the entire page as it was meant to be presented in the print layout? I often wonder when toggling back and forth between the two settings if the story and the artwork are driven by that single page presentation or if the new panel display is changing the way the story is told. Thoughts?

Grace, I never went physical. This year I discovered Saga and Y the Last Man on my library's digital app and I see no reason to switch to paper...unless I can find the entire book at a good price, but it doesnt look like that will happen anytime soon.

I understand your concerns about the digital comics. For those of us who do have a great store however, I prefer the store. I go a place called Vault of Midnight in Michigan - an amazing store - clean, well run, very welcoming to people of all ages, gender and taste. These are all bagged and boarded. I'm sorry you had a poor experience but for those of us who have great experiences, try to support your places. My store also carry a lot of indy stuff and have authors/creators drop by.
Totally agree with you Grace on Zhang Ziyi- she was incredible in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (and had a fab presence in Rush Hour 2).
Also weird coincidence- was talking about this very thing with a cosplayer friend of mine in Norwich. We used to have a specialist manga/Japanese merchandise store called Kommiku and she was saying how when they first opened she advised them on what to do to ensure people didn't just hang about. In this case it was worse than the comic stores because they played cards on the tables and spent long periods of time not buying anything. Furthermore I do think comic stores in local areas should do more to support local talent and artists because that would help them stand out, as well as reaching out to communities like cosplayers, more charity events, networking etc.

I've really wanted a remake of the IT miniseries for years - the original gave me nightmares for years and I still have a fear of clowns and - spoilers - spiders ;) I've been really impressed with the coverage of the film and the recent trailers so far but would love to know your thoughts on what you think the film needs to do right to instill a same nostalgic fear as the 1990 miniseries. Basically, what does IT - hahaha - need to do right, and do you think it can be the memorablly scary as the original?

Hi, Grace!Oh my gosh, I remember that scandal (I live in Georgia). The teachers changed the answers to the students' CRCT (our state test at the time) answers. I do not know how the movie will go over here. The whole situation was a huge embarrassment for the school board and dominated headlines for years. Generally speaking, Teachers do not get the credit they deserve for shaping the lives of their students. This movie will have to show teachers in a negative light and if they do not balance the negative with the positive, educators across the country may be turned off. In addition to educators, minority group communities in Georgia will be under the microscope, and if they are misrepresented, there will be a backlash.On the other hand, there is potential for the movie to highlight the weaknesses in the Education system and add the necessary pressure for long-needed changes to be made.
I can see why the scandal attracted Coogler & Jordan to make a movie about it, but if they are not careful, this project could blow up in their face for more than one reason.

I haven't gone full digital because I like my books. I did, however, give up the comic books for the trades because I can't get to the store every week and then when I do finally get there I forget what issue number I'm on.

For some reason It's the price that deters me from buying digital comic. If it was cheaper then the phycial I would get the digital. But since they are the same price I feel I get more from the physical (thought now I only buy Udon comics's street fighter series)

I went digital with my books a few years back once I got my paperwhit kindle. I have more that 80 books that I can take with me anywhere. Also my husband and I moved recently to Berlin and it's difficult to find new release in English and the veraity is quite small.

digital topic - in my case most of comics books which i like is not available in simple bookstores, if i would like to read them I can do it only in a digital version. but I do not like them in that way, if possible I would like have them in "paper" way
I flip out on comic book day almost every week because of the browsers. My store bags and boards the books so they're pristine when you pick it up off the rack. Unfortunately there are those who break the seal on the bag and pull out a book and bend spines and just LEAVE the book on the rack without putting it back in the bag. I honestly think if you open the book you bought it, just recently I stopped buying a majority of my books and haven't opted for digital, I am thinking of just stopping all together.

Where I live there are no comic book stores, the only hope is Walmart and there's no variety and also the comics I want come out really late when all the issues are bundled together which takes a lot of time. I just buy them on Amazon cause I like having the physical copy but I'm really thinking about changing to digital.
Hi Grace! I actually work in a comicbook store, a fairly new/local one that only seems to get foot traffic. And I understand your sentiment completely. I always feel bad for actual collectors/weekly readers, simply because everyone else who comes through is only interested in the novelty of it all (and ends up messing up the books). If I didn't get an employee discount- I'd probably go digital.

I'd really like to hear your thoughts on more casting ideas for Gotham city sirens. What do you think about casting Rihanna as Poison Ivy? I guess we'll still have to see how she does in Valerian, but her charisma is very different from Margot Robbie's Harley and we know she looks good in red hair. And as much as I'd love Rebecca Ferguson to play catwoman, I have this weird urge to see Ziyi Zhang kick some ass in a superhero movie. Is race-bending 2/3 of the trio a bit too much? Can China's box office potential give Zhang a chance?

Digital comics are also better for the environment. Less trees to cut down, less co2 in the atmosphere from shipping them. If i really want the physical copy of something i order online. #introvert
I had already stopped buying books unless I was going to a signing. At 48 and an avid reader every room in my home had bookshelves. Then Marvel sent me an email $5 a month for Unlimited and was sold. The Marvel app is awesome. It stores your library and skips to the next panel so you don't get distracted reading ahead. I love digital!
I got a subscription to The Amazing Spider-man because it is cheaper than buying individual comics. I also don't have to worry about getting it on release date or making sure there enough copies. The physical copy usually comes with a code to download a digital copy so I get a free backup copy. Plus I prefer reading physical copies because I already spend too much time looking at a screen.
I still buy comic books at the store, but mostly it is just the trade paperbacks. And I usually give it away after reading it. I don't see the value of collecting the physical comic books that just takes us space since I have become minimalist in most aspects of my life and I have a very tiny apartment to work with that is probably just an equivalent of your studio room.
What store did you used to go to grace? I stopped going to Forbidden Planet on 14th cuss of the crowds.
Hey Grace! What do you think of Alex Kurtzman naming Fassbender, Jlaw, Charlize Theron, and Angelina Jolie for people he wants in the Dark Universe? I personally think Angelina would be a fantastic Bride of Frankenstein. :)
