XG girls are super young so it makes sense that they're still developing their style, colour and techniques. Juria just turned 17 and I must say, she's very impressive. Japanese have a very different vocal style from Koreans. This song is by non other than IU, a vocal goddess. For Juria, this vocal style, this language, everything must have seemed very different and difficult to adapt. But she did a great job.

I personally really like how Juria sings here, I am not a teacher nor a singer I'm talking about the emotions she and her voice give me, the air she uses carry so many feelings. I prefer when a voice carries the weight of what the lyrics have lived, it's the same with acting, it is not just performing, but living. Plus she projects me in the sky, among soft clouds. 😍 I also got the impression she uses air purposely, sort of what Chase said after the second refrain(?). Juria's breathy, delicate, whisper singing is pretty much a straight cover of IU's version of the song. IU also does the same sort of breathy singing. This is a style of singing often done by KPOP and JPOP female singers when singing a slow ballad. KPOP and JPOP fans are not adverse to western style open, chest voices but not for emotionally, heartfelt, heart breaking songs that can bring out the tears. Female singers with breathy, whispery, head voices sound more sincere to Japanese and Korean listeners. Juria probably could, but would rather not for this song. True to the original version.The more open chest voice dynamic ending is done by IU. Juria does this as well but hits the high note climax with more punch at the end.
As an Alphaz and a vocal mentor myself, I agree 100% with you guys 😄 but trust me, our girl Juria is improved a lot from her trainee days until now. In this case, the song itself is already hard. IU even trying so hard singing this song as safest as she can on live. Soft and hard control, breath technique and mix voice balance control, I genuinely surprised Juria could slay this song from her current singing ability. In short, she could survive crossing a jungle only by knife and water, in terms of this song and her singing ability. And I'm sooo sure, she could be more. She's still 19. I hope you build more power and able to produce nicely, directly from diaphragm rather than chest. Juria 파이팅! ❤

Its obvious that the both language has totally different pronunciations of syllables and vowels. what this specific word pronounced in Japanese can be pronounced differently in Korean. Idk if she studied the language but I think when she sing she is molding that word for her to actually sounds like Korean. since she is not singing on her native language, it's possible that her tongue and jaw placement adjusted to the language she is singing in. Many Korean comments on her video saying that she's very fluent and sounded so good. Also she is literally sitting and belting. The original singer of this song said that this song is really hard to sing so I have nothing but praises to Juria for pulling this song off🙌💪

I'm sure Juria has top professionals vocal coaches helping her in singing in Korean and her vocal techniques , think about yourself singing in a different language one of the toughest songs to sing covering IU's masterpiece. I think she did an incredible cover and the emotions of the song was perfectly expressed by her performance.

i agree to a lot of your biases lmao as someone who also prefers powerful, whole, resonant voices, i have a hard time listening to a lot of pop artists of today (especially in kpop) because they don't practice the styles that i prefer. honestly, in this case, i think juria is emulating a lot of kpop artists' style of singing. the breathy voice and trembly, inconsistent vibrato is so popular in kpop which im not really a fan of, they all do this excessive breath in everytime they finish a phrase and i'm gonna notice all of it until the end of the song! 😆 i also agree in regards to that theory that if they're not holding a mic, no one will hear them lmao but i do think juria can do other styles, just cuz she did a great job on some parts of the song where her voice opened up more and had the more natural vibrato. this was a great analysis! thank you so much! if you are open to analysing more unique vocal tones, can I suggest you listen to Aimer - Kataomoi from THE FIRST TAKE channel? thank you!! there are a lot of unique artists from this channel, mainly from japan, but they recently did a session with Harry Styles and Avril Lavigne, just an fyi hahaha thank you again this was such an informative video!!

Honestly I really appreciate the honesty and although I'm not a professional voice trainer, I come from a family of voice trainers and had lessons myself from a young age, so I can really agree with a lot of the things you both say. Juria is my XG bias but I agree there were a few part that felt a little "under-supported" or almost shaky. I very slightly disagree with the first verse just because that part felt like an honest artistic decision to make it more emotional, but the middle part before the climax part felt like she was using too much of her throat and almost choking a little (exactly what you're saying from around 6:00). I've always been taught the difference between singing from your chest vs from your stomach, and that's the difference I see too. Again (and like you say) I don't know if it was an artistic decision to make it seem like she's really understanding the emotional theme of the song, but it's almost going too far. I somewhat speculate that they were REALLY going for this because they are a Japanese group and were often criticized by the Korean audiences for not singing in Korean, so they were trying to really strike home the fact that they understood, but honestly, who knows. And yes, like what everyone else is saying in the comments, she's still young and there's still a lot more for her to develop, but I feel like there were a few parts of the song that didn't do her singing skills justice. I still probably listen to this everyday (again, she's my bias so give me a break) and think it's beautiful, but I still agree that it's definitely inefficient and maybe even difficult for her now and to keep up. And you two are the first people to even mention it, but I definitely felt the same way since the first time I heard this. By the way, I noticed that you were both very concerned about offending fans, and I definitely appreciate that. Even though I don't think it's necessary to be as polite as you both were, I know some fans don't want to hear anything negative about their favorite artists (including some in this comment section apparently).

But also, this song is an IU song, who specializes in an angelic, breathy, almost whisper at times, style, that she is trying to copy and control. Juria doesn't have a powerful voice except in short batches and ad libs on her MVs, like in Shooting Star or Left Right. She is only 18 and still learning/growing. If you watched the Peaches video with Chisa, you will see a more relaxed naturall tone from her, with more efficiency. It's beautiful and completely different from this IU song.
