Morrissey is based. When I was a teenager, I always thought The Smiths were a bit odd (and they are), but then I bought their greatest hits and really listened to the lyrics. They struck me as simplistically profound, especially for a young lad navigating the struggles of adolescence. ‘What Difference Does It Make?’ remains one of my all-time favorite songs.

How true. The amount of clubs I went to in the early to mid 1980s was mad. You met everyone and everything with NO stigma. Even on the street. King's Road London, I'm straight as a die but today it's sad.
Conservative croatian catholic here. The Smiths were an unusual pop band in the 80s. Their songs referred to a lost, emotional and love-seeking youth trying to find their way in the world. When you're seventeen, it's easy to identify with Morrissey and Maar's lyrics full of mild irony and nostalgia. Although they rebel against all authority, including the Church, there's something of St. Augustine in their search for meaning. Morrissey sings: " "There's a club if you'd like to go You could meet somebody who really loves you So you go and you stand on your own And you leave on your own And you go home and you cry And you want to die." Pope Benedict XVI said: "Noisy expressions of joy are often a mask behind which despair is hidden. Nowhere can a young man be so alone as surrounded by a crowd of people." A decade later, they still inspire. They are definitely worth listening to.
Mozza has already written a song about journalists, it's very funny. Moz was in/on NME, Melody Maker almost every issue at the time. He left the UK for a reason, a better life.

One of the more thoughtful and musical bands to come out of the post-punk era. Such a special band. "What she asked of me at the end of the day, Caligula would have blushed." Come on, how good is that? !?!
Morrissey’s new album basically got cancelled by Capital Records because of his GB First political stance…there’s a song on it called “Bonfire of Teenagers” I think people should hear. He’s basically roasting the Brits who sang “Don’t Look Back in Anger” when the Manchester arena bombing happened” where he says “I can assure you I will look back in anger 'till the day I die”
It's a very moving song. Sad to say that a man being publicly angry about the violent destruction of 22 people, many of them kids, is brave. But that's Britain today. He wrote and sang the song Arianna Grande should have sung - and absolutely nobody should have sung 'Don't look back in Anger'.
It is amazing to me that Michael Knowles can be 34 years old, claim to have any idea what’s going on in the world, and also not have listened to the Smiths…

I listened to this song a lot when I got my first job out of college and I moved to a place where I didn't know anyone, I was lonely, I was barely making enough money to cover rent, and it was the middle of winter. It made me feel a little better at the time, and when I hear it now, even though it was a pretty difficult time, this song makes me think back on it a little fonder, I remember the good as well as the bad. Heaven knows I'm not miserable now.
How could you have never heard "Panic"?! I grad high school in '82, voted Reagan in '84, LOTS of punk and new wave-type music of that era was libertarian/conservative at its core. There were a lot of other examples, there was nothing particularly leftist at all about the Smiths and Morrissey has been canceled for expressing pro-Britain First views.
