This is my favorite beach volleyball player. I used to watch him play semi pro in the 2000’s in Florida when he was coming up. In those days, you were allowed to kick the serve and his sky ball was insane. You could see it from courts away, it looked like a rocket going into the sky.
This serve was created in Copacabana beach, Rio de Janeiro, in the 70's and made popular by Brazilian player Bernard in the 80's. Bernard performed it a lot in 1984's OG, making this serve famous worldwide. Bernard named it Jornada nas Estrelas, Brazilian title for tv series Star Trek.
That serve would be hard to return on a sunny day. Love the commenter's laugh when the Americans couldn't return his serves (though the Americans were already winning by a lot by that time already)
Learn this serve from my dad in summer of 2000 It was pretty basic, so I was trying to make it better Crazy to see that THIS guy is famous for that serve... Where was he 15-20 years ago
It seemed pretty useless against the USA at the Olympics when they defeated the Italians in straight sets. Maybe it was the overcast conditions so it wasn't lost in the sun or something.
@@MrBeatboxmasta debatable. If the ball is straight up, where the Sun is located, it's almost impossible to receive (perhaps unless you have glasses). Otherwise if they have sunglasses or the sun isn't in the right position then, yes, I agree with you.
It’s not so great when he does it over and over again, most of the times sending the ball straight out or just gifting the opponent an easy return…I’ve seen it happening plenty of times. If you cut and paste a highlight clip it looks so great, but it is NOT!
Anche se sono pro vanno tutti a ricevere sta skyball con le gambe imbachettate come dei pali. Va accompagnata dolcemente con le gambe fino a terra in ricezione.. 🤷♂️

I love how the skyball disrupts everything and makes these pros look like a bunch of newbs.
I love this guy. His serve is brillant, but he is also a good defender...

It’s super hard to return if the sun is out.
funnier than the game scenes is the narrator laughing about it 😂
I have my own version of skyball serve. It completely messes up the opponents positional awareness while tracking the ball.👌

*Mr Skyball making miracles*
A very unique skill
The one born in Montevideo Uruguay. Congrats on that unique style.
*Question. Where to watch live beach volleyball games in Tokyo?*
The worst part in performing this serve is sky balling in the wrong direction. 😂
ahahah happened to me yesterday. Good laugh
muy interesante ese saque, buena estrategia

Carambula is the only one using it at top level tournaments.
Have you ever?
That skyball broke up that Russian duo.
I didn't know it had a name. We used to do it a lot but we called it the hailstone.

Why do people choose to call it skyball serve? The original name, Star Trek serve is much cooler.

Because you need to watch upwards into the sky if you want to pass it.
