My wife and I use the Helix for bass and guitar; simultaneously. It works great. BTW, you can have up to 32 blocks in a preset, DSP permitting.

@@MrMann-gt1eh You can run 4 separate channels through it simultaneously. Running a guitar through one signal chain and a bass guitar through another is simple. BTW, my original post was 3 years ago and they've added all kinds of amps and effects and functionality since or free. Helix keeps getting better and better.

One of the reasons a lot of the amp models seem overdriven by default is that the default compressor model output is fairly hot. If you're finding you have to back off more than you'd expect on the amp drive, check the stuff before it in the signal chain, just like in a real world situation.

Lee is correct here... the presets ARE actually not very impressive or useful on the Helix. Compared to the presets on a Kemper or a Fractal unit the Helix really suffers. However, if you build your own presets you will find them every bit as sonically pleasing, and you'll also realise the Helix is leagues easier to utilise, than the aforementioned gear. I am an admitted Line 6 junkie but anyone who spends the time with it knows the Helix is seriously versatile and sounds phenomenal. It now forms the basis of my rig for both bass and guitar. It is worth mentioning that for full sonic quality you may prefer 3rd party cabs in the form of IR's (Impulse Responses; which, in this case, are emulated cabs) I also record vocals through the Helix and it is my main audio interface in the home studio. There's not a lot it can't do and anyone who claims the sound is substandard probably only heard the woeful presets and didn't sit down with it through an FRFR monitor or reasonably flat studio monitors to hear it's full tweak-able glory.

Funny how everyone has to immediately comment how helix sounds best with 3rd party impulses.... I think helix sounds pretty good but I find it odd that as soon as someone says they don’t like the tone it’s followed with “yeah but you just need 3rd party IR’s and it’ll sound great” Lol they’re not commenting on what other companies impulse will do, they’re speaking on the helix.

    • @AlexVonCrank
      @AlexVonCrank 6 лет назад +1

•allstopblue • You clearly have no clue. The reason people recommend IR's is because they sound better than the line 6 cabs. Simple. Try it yourself.

The *general* rule these days is if it’s digital it can do both bass and guitar, if it’s analogue mods may be required to avoid cutting the bass frequencies.
Through the 80’s and 90’s we did have seperate bass multi effects even though they were digital and that was mostly because they didn’t have the memory/storage/software suites, etc required for storing lots of sounds and patches. I’ve always suspected that things like the ME50 and ME50b were barely any different inside.
But yeah, for the last few years, and probably going forward, digital effects will be a one for all. The one gotcha is that because the guitar market is so much bigger they may release with guitar effects and have bass specific things like amp/cab emulation added later, best example being the GT1000 from boss that was about a year I think before they made bass patches available for download.
But yeah, it’s not like playing a bass through a DS-1 for example where you have to replace several capacitors to keep the bass

  • @frmcf

It's kind of an expensive solution for bass, since most bassists will only use a fraction of the features. That said, if you really use it a lot, and need the versatility in the studio and onstage, it seems like it can do it all.

They should go more into the device and it's options for bass players before making a 45 minute video. These routing features are massive. Take a clean bass amp without cab and a clean or dirty guitar head with a cab and blend those to taste. Cabs tend to really make the lows hard to control when you just change them. Over those two little speakers it may not seem a big problem, but when you play through a 215/412/810 it really is way to problematic.

I am walking proof that Helix presets can be used to gig live and record with.
I have used my Helix for the past year or so both with bass and guitar for live pub gigs, Church, recording and everything in between. They sound good. Period. I’ve made my own presets, tweaked factory presets and had nothing but praise from seasoned guitarists through to average joes with no musical experience.
The bottom line is that average joe eating at the local tavern doesn’t care if the band’s bass or guitar sounds a certain way. I have dialed in a sound which suits the context of where I’m using Helix and Helix lives up to its reputation sound wise and with reliability. I dare you to try it!

To answer, no not at all, Helix's are great, I get to get my hands on one almost every weekend, and I will probably own one someday.
It just sounded farty on a BASS, and yes I would be able to tell if a bass sounded farty be it going through a helix or or a full tube SVT, doesn't change the fact that it sounds farty.
That being said although the Helix has bass geared features in it, it most definitely isn't geared towards bassists, so it's not that surprising that the bass modelings do not sound as good as the guitar modelers (way less time spent on the Bass side of the Helix I would imagine)

I thought the Native bass amps were the best Ive heard in software, of course other IRs would help too. I wasnt thrilled by a lot of the sounds in this demo though, maybe its the bass, but it sounded like weird farty distortion on the bottom. On the software at least there was an input level to aim for to be accurate, it might be too hot in this case making the preamp part of the modelling fart out.

Just jump into the SVT with the 810 fridge cab. No bass player needs more. You can get it in the PodGo for a fraction of the price.

To every one who thinks they can plug into a piece of gear that will automatically make them sound better, it does not. You just can't plug it into a guitar amp and expect it to sound good without setting up the right configuration that your plugging into. I see a lot of people trying out some gear without thinking that a guitar amp is going to sound like a full range speaker then they think "this sucks" then go on to the next magic box that will make them sound like Jimi Hendrix by just plugging in to be disappointed yet again.
