What Maker Pipe needs is a software allowing the customers to easily design their "furniture". 😎

At first I thought that FreeCAD plugin might be a good fit, but then realized that barrier of entry is way too high for that one.

I actually had the same thoughts, but I also want to point out that this MakerPipe is not an entirely new idea, and it's worth looking at what's already out there.
I mean there are actually people who make custom structures out of scaffolds, and software to plan scaffold already exists.
And then there are streetworkout projects like kengurupro.us/ which also have pipes and clamps, that work similarly to MakerPipe.

Glad to see a small business from SC (my home state) making it happen. It might be worth looking into “5S” & “6-Sigma” if you haven’t already. This was pretty big when I worked for FN Manufacturing in Columbia, SC. I was even more surprised to see training offered in both of these areas when I was a jet engine mechanic in the Marine Corps. It’s all about workflow & process improvement. It was constantly implemented & definitely made a noticeable difference. One thing FN did as an incentive for the employees was to offer a check for 10% of the company’s calculated annual savings to whomever improved a process. For example, there was a guy that operated a CNC machine that came up with the idea to install a screened spigot at the bottom of the chip catcher. This allowed the company to better refine & recycle the cutting fluid. Saved FN roughly $750K/yr & the employee got a check for $75K.

Hey NYC CNC, you can make some pretty incredible stuff with these type of systems. My tip for you is to search for “karakuri pipe joint system” and click away. We use this at the plant I work at, although we are a very large workplace where tools such as these perhaps are more useful than at a smaller shop, I’m sure you’ll be at least a little inspired. The system we use is called G.S-Ace but there are of course dozens of different brands.

The more common type is called "Creform". We use them all the time in automotive when we need cheap assembly line racking. Creform.com They have a much larger library since they've been doing it for decades. Not trying to diminish what these guys are doing, but it's the equivalent of what MakerBeam is to 80/20 aluminum extrusion.

I was going to say, I was making tables and fixtures with these 13 years ago. It's nice to see them have competition, but it looks almost identical. These things are great and a lot stronger than they look.
We also used Coroplast panels as work surfaces, easy to clean and cut and it's bendable. You can pop a hole in it and zip tie it to the pipes. I've made similar racks to the shipping racks and I put coroplast panels between them to keep them from interfering.

    • @druming9
      @druming9 3 года назад

Yeah, I think the fittings are almost identical in shape to Creform. But the Creform pipe is a plastic sheath over a metal core. And, as with any brand meant for "industry", it's stupid expensive for a home gamer unless your boss is letting you take home extra pieces. Hopefully these guys have made it easier for us diy guys to get into.

The motorola facility I worked at had all of their production lines built with a very similar system. I don't recall exactly what the joints looked like. But they built some pretty cool stuff with it. As a production worker I could tell maintenance an idea to improve my workspace and it could be implemented pretty quick.

I go to make a bunch of text tube when my shop was slow at Boeing. I had fun with it because I got to design in my head, did do some really ruff sketches though.
Would of been a lot faster if they let me build out of Bosch, but apparently it’s way more expensive. Personally I doubt they saved much money with the cost of my labor.

  • @12346798Mann

If I was makerpipe, I would call my product "6030"
I'm a huge fan of Unistrut, I wish it was cheaper so I could use it in a similar way but this stuff is much more economical for "building first/asking questions later" as Adam Savage so eloquently puts it.

Quite a lot people actually use scaffolding pipes to quickly make different kind of structures, in pretty much the same way as you did. Except this MakerPipe is obviously light-duty and way cheaper.
I'm just saying that the idea is not new, and you can get inspiration by looking at what people make out of scaffolds.
