I have to admit, the first half of your review was great. However, I noticed quickly in the second half there were a number of issues when it came to the discussion around not respecting your time. At lvl 35 you have tier 1 pals helping you build end game structures and ammo. The entire point of the game is to automate via pals, and yet you’re doing it yourself. It’s no wonder you spent so long doing it! Certain pals like Anubis turn these crafts which are, yes, very long; into crafts that take mere moments. It’s entirely possible to either breed for it or to catch the lvl 45 boss Anubis at around lvl 30 if you fight it with higher tier grass types. Higher tier pals I never really saw you use. You still had nitewing at lvl 35, and while yes you can be attached to them, you can’t complain when the options are in fact out there. I’m sorry but the foundation for a lot of your criticisms simply boil down here to “skill issue”.
This is also not to mention that, if you did t like certain parts of the game, it offers more than plenty of options for tweaking difficulty.

Thanks for the insight! You're right that automation is important. While I certainly had a lot of low-level pals, I had other bases with higher-tier ones as well (but perhaps I didn't have enough). You're right that it is about automation, but I think the path there can be long, especially if you play on the regular settings.
In addition, I would argue that every part of the game experiences this "grind" I'm talking about. The capturing of 10 pals of the same kind for example, is a grind in itself, it becomes busywork. Now whether you enjoy that or not is another matter of course, and I respect it if you do. It's just not for me - one of the strengths of Pokemon was forming an actual bond after all, and I almost felt the opposite in Palworld, despite my best efforts to indeed keep my Nitewing for a long time :)

Sandbox games are like a mirror to the player's creativity. Some people cant bare the sight of their reflection, others face it head on with drive and purpose. The lack of end goal is the draw for some people. The romanticized idea that you can dominate the game just through your creativity and cunning is why a lot, if not most people play survival sandbox games. Now in reality, how many people really are so special that their creativity just outright outsmarts the game and do spectacular things? Probably not many, but the idea that you could is what keeps people playing these type of games.
The are an entire group of people out there who plays these type of games just to optimize every little thing and build spectacular game breaking things, and that's the fun for them. Time is a form of currency, and the value of what we spend it on is entirely subjective. Who's to say Palworld's game design is more of a waste of time than the time you spend looking at loading screens in Starfield? or the tens of thousands of hours people put into fornite/league of legend? Just because the game loops is shorter doesn't mean they aren't trying to waste your time. To say Palworld's design specifically is time wasting especially compare to its genre peers like Ark, Valheim, or even the recently releases Enshrouded feels a bit one sided

People always seem to complain about there being no story and yet still get what little there is completely wrong. The syndicate is only ONE FACTION out of FIVE in the game. The story is clearly meant to have some sort of faction war but obviously the game isnt finished so we dont know where it leads, but we know for a fact that theres more than one main villain... if they are even evil and we arent the real villain.
No texture? Have you not zoomed in on a Sweepa? The texture is there.

fair to say yours is probably the more accurate assessment of the game compared to the video. Its just another survival game with a new twist on the survival mechanics where you have to rely on the pals to survive. With the hype over, most that are still playing are either latecomers to the game, playing it very casually and slowly, or hardcore survival players who like to micro manage every bit of the game mechanics and find ways to optimize the entire operation.
The last part is clearly not really for everyone though. Since its in early access, I do hope they revamp the pal usage for end game workload, Some of the best and highest work efficiency pals for a particular task tend to be so big the AI pathing in the base encounters issues, probably the biggest nitpick I have with the game.

i think the "grinding and crafting" part sounds a lot more worse in your video then my experience.
I think it IS so awful designd with pressing one button because the game wants you to exactly feel this way and so that you let your little guys doing this for you. And that works well with the right combination of the right pals and a base that is optimized for the pals pathfinding.
In the Endgame i only give orders at my crafting stations for tons of munition, spheres, meals or materials, go exploring a little more, fight bosses, clear dungeons for blueprints (or go afk and write comments like this one) and my dudes will finish their tasks. i didn´t have to use a crafting station by myself since level 20 or so. And even all my pals are busy in my main base, i have the little guys which i took with me which can do it for me ^^"
meanwhile on base 2 and 3 which (you can build later) my pals farm ore and coal, so that i have nearly all materials for nearly all important stuff.
Okay to be fair, you need a lot ore and coal and i still go out and farm more by my self or more concrete, my digtoise will farm it in a few minutes and i transport it to my base. Anything else, with one exception, can be bought from shops and even getting palfluid (the one thing you can´t buy) is fun, because you can hunt down dozens of water pals in a few minutes at one specific shore.
Compared to ARK or Conan Exiles or any other Survival game i know, crafting and the grind in palworld is even less of a pain and time consuming and you can go out and do more of the funny stuff like exploring and fighting and catching pals or even building then farming materials, because the automation works very well if you understand how the pal pathfinding and in result optimal basebuilding works.

We've been spoiled by games in which we can easily dominate things that are tens of levels above us and I think that's more the problem than not being able to curbstomp everything that's a higher level. They're higher level for a reason. We were always *supposed* to work herder/grind more/get better gear/whatever it took to MEET the difficulty of the thing we're trying to defeat BEFORE we engage it. I actually believe that, if something is even one level higher, it should be at least twice as difficult to defeat than if you were at its level. 5 levels higher? 5 times more difficult. Otherwise, what really is the point of levels if everything can just be facerolled? You said there's no tactics involved in that but I strongly disagree. Leaving it alone and coming back when you *can* fight it IS the tactic. If that doesn't make sense to you then levels shouldn't make sense to you at all, either.

Also not sure what he's talking about, this game has some of the most easily abused mechanics I've ever seen. Just stay far away from the enemy so you have ample time to doge and then recall your pal every time they are about to get hit by a big attack followed by redeploying them. I've defeated plenty of bosses that were 5+ levels higher. Not to mention stored pals heal out of combat so you have a ton of effective hp if you keep a rotation going. At least the towers were smart enough to have a time limit as a dps check.

first half of the video is good. last half you completely lose the plot with a lot of poor arguments. saying palworld is soulless is just funny considering how souless pokemon is these days. i like the cutesy and dark ton of palworld and how they contrast each other. what neat about palworld is that unlike many games these days, you can choose to be evil or not. you could enslave people and treat your pals poorly or you could choose to treat your pals well. in this over sanitized landscape palworld has more souls than most games that comes out these days because it blends so many different aspects of other games together. it forms its own identity through the unique ways it pulls all these aspects together.

@AndysCritique As others have pointed out elsewhere in other replies, it is very important to contextualize that your arguments about "grind" here are entirely due to inadequate player behavior on your part. While not everyone necessarily dives right into breeding ASAP, following video guides to get all the best pals as early as possible, level 2 work suitability should have been your "bare minimum, needs replacing, ASAP" standard by the 20's. By the 30's, you should have been collecting a variety of work suitability 3 pals. The work speed is exponential as work suitability rises, with the epic 5 suitability being the stuff of memes with how fast their animations get.
As for XP, catching 10 of every pal is really only necessary with custom (reduced) XP rate. Even at default Hard with 0.8 rate, I only ever go for 10 of anything that I want to condense (vixy or any endgame worker pal), or anything I need to catch + butcher for drops that I can't buy at merchants. There is no shortage of gold with either high yield afk farms or the rewards from cave spamming (which also gives tons of XP and useful rare pals).
I think the above is better than just saying "skill issue" as others have done.

I suppose with more knowledge of the game like using pals with specific high tier skills to cut down drastically on time doesn't change your mind either? Or the fact that this game is not a complete product and should be treated as an early access game which is exactly what it is and does not hide that might be taken into consideration as well? Does the soulless argument stem from those early access aspects or is it the oftentimes seemingly "lazy" design choices with poor AI design with the humans, pathing, and the other clunky issues that plague the game? With enough understanding of the game and it's mechanics you can cut down the "grinding" aspect by a significant amount. Doesn't that make your argument about "time wasted" in the game null and void?

This is an interesting review you made for this. There are some points that are good and bad that you pointed out (I disagree with the lifeless world; on steam version, I come across noticeable skirmishes where humans are attacking pals, pals are hunting other pals, and pals fighting each other over territory disputes and/or consuming corpses. Pals do run away from players or predator pals, or alphas and pals outside their ecosystem), and some points that are definitely due to early access jank (building bases on flat surfaces and using handiwork only pals in base would seriously help with that crafting stuff-to be fair, this is something the tutorial should have specified), but the one I want to focus on is a point that took a good portion of the latter:
The Soul Discussion, or lack-thereof in Palworld.
You imply that part of a soul in a game is based around the creative vision that the game holds. In one of the interviews the CEO of Pocketpair too, he was asked about his creative vision for Palworld. His response supposedly was that he didn’t exactly have a creative vision; he just wanted to make a game that people would like to play.
When I read this, I actually had a bit of a hard time comprehending it, until I remembered something a good while ago. Back when I was in university, there was a debacle and arguments over whether videogames could be considered art or not. A lot of people said no and a lot said yes, and a lot more games have been made to make this point known. However, I think the medium didn’t exactly start with art in mind as it was always made to sell a product first and foremost, which is to entertain the consumer. I believe lots of other media runs into this situation, except they had a lot more time (hundreds of years and iterations, like movies and plays) to blend it all well as opposed to videogames, which is only just shy of 40 years of development.
At the end of that turmoil, you essentially have 3 groups of games: the ones that are intentionally art and made for the art’s expression, the one that is made solely as a product for entertainment, and the ones that combine the two together. I think Palworld sits directly in the game made to be sold for entertainment section. And hey, it worked for me. The game is pretty fun and while the creatures are bright, the world beautiful but dreary, the morality of the player put into question for chucking spheres at people, the questionable decision to make pals work and yet treat them as friend or foe, or just butchering for space, it does indeed borrow from a lot of sources. There may not be a soul, but it does take genuine talent to blend everything to make it all work well. But BOY does it stick out when pathfinding doesn’t work as intended.
There were older trailers that did show that the world was originally in unity and with an art style that matched the characters, the pals, and the world. It looked pretty good, but even then, things like the guns and violence were the same. The engine switched to UE5, and while the world and some pals transitioned well, I think the humans still need to be polished up to fit a bit more. Still, I think the developer made the right choice in prioritizing the game as entertainment rather than as an art form. And while doing both a game as an art and entertainment well isn’t impossible, there are just some who just want to cobble things together to make something fun, regardless of direction. So I think it’s fine if it doesn’t have a soul. After all, do you really need a soul when you can just use it to strengthen your Pals further?

The problem your seeing about grinding is the same problem I’m actually facing with Pokémon funny enough, I am trying to beat nemona because after grinding on the star bases I FINALLY got strong enough to face the elite 4… with this game it feels a lot nicer because when catching Pokémon I had to worry about their level and their type and what moves to use it was EXHAUSTING to grind for exp because i couldn’t find the right Pokémon to just let my team rip into. But In palworld it’s not about the level of the pal it’s about the level of the base and your level and pals level INSANELY FAST! Faster then you do so it isn’t hard to get a level 1 to a level 30 in mere seconds and that’s if you care about that pal having a level at all.
You don’t even seem to look at what the condenser can do to upgrade pals either or into their passive stats as in the breedable stats. Or the fact of the depression or ulcers or ANYTHING about the sanity that makes it less about populating the base and more about making sure the pals are taken care of.
Not to mention the castaways entry’s that talk about how the island is populated with pals that are not native to any other part of the world or that in the creation of shadowbeak he required human DNA HINTING at a direct relation that humans have with pals that Pokémon doesn’t have.
It’s the entire reason humans can be captured.
And while yes the crafting is INSANELY SLOW! It encourages you to make a conveyor so multiple pals can help. It encourages you to breed for artisan and increase your workspeed and find lvl 3 and lvl 4 pals. It gives you options and ways to innovate and if you aren’t going to use the pals then why create the conveyor in the first place?
Vixie also upgrades too so she drops mega spheres and my partner was packed FULL of spheres just from exploring and picking them up off the ground and if you have to you can always sell unwanted pals and buy ingredients.
Palworld encourages you to explore and catch and decide how to play. It is a commentary on the classic gamer, it combines grinding, and exploring, and pets, and lore hunting, and innovation, AND GUNS, and choices. All into one game. It accepts what it is. Doesn’t pull punches. It even wraps it up with the shock value so many current players adore.
The big thing I think we need to remember is the maker of palworld said this “i just wanted to make something people would like” and he did. Weather you like it or not palworld is a form of art. It’s a commentary on what the modern consumer enjoys. And that to me. Is art in its own right. Weather it was intended like that or not. I love this game. I love the fact someone who is no good at strategy or focusing or who even likes guns! Can just pick up my favorite animal like a flame thrower and go “BURN BABY BURN” when i have had a rough day… and when I’m happy i can ride my ripoff bolt hound all the way down the path to the snow where i can keep hunting for that vanworm cryst that will keep my fridge eternally cold. And maybe find something else while I’m up there. Who knows. But I simply enjoy the basework. And that’s what I enjoy. Others I adore love other things about it and that’s what I love. A game that i can play that isn’t extremely expensive that i can have fun with my friends on.
… and once I get that large bed my base will have that other slot it needs and I will FINALLY be able to have everyone where they belong. (We have three guild members at three bases it’s been a struggle lol)

@@AndyMeetsFantasy dude, you literally can get pals that trivialise the crafting, I caught a lunaris, with lvl 3 handling and kept farming her till I got 3 of them, with one having a permanent stay on my 5 pals team, if I need something done and quickly I just prop her down and everything gets done quickly, and she is lvl 23, so you get here long before things get grindy, I got a loupmon with the artisan skill, hardworker too, and their speed increases at night too(I think) so I have him permanently at base, got a broncherry aqua for the machines that need water since she has lvl2 in water skill she can also help in watering for the farming process, and a flying pal, I forget it's name with lvl 3 kindling, throw in katresses with lvl 2 handling and transportation, coupled with the fact that they don't sleep, and you round the clock help, get the Blastoise clone for minimg, dinosom for planting and logging. The pals space at camp is still not full since I can have 15 pals at base, and I can get most things relatively quickly.
Foresight and planing ahead comes into play too. I made a base with pals that can mine ore and transportation around a group of ore nodes, and another base around coal nodes with 15 pals each specialized for farming and transportation, every few hours i check back at them i move all available ore to my base and process them immediately and by the time im done exploring a new biome and back with a full imventory, all the ores are smelted, i put in for more bullets to be made, and plop down my lunaris to handle the crafting since she wont leave to eat, and by the time im done with micromanaging my base a good portion of it is done, I go out with that portion explore for a few minutes and come back to get the done cratfs

@@AndyMeetsFantasy there is so much that improves craft time from minutes to seconds, unless you call 10 seconds grinding with the right combination of pals with specialties in multiple base management skills, and passives, you can't have a clumsy or musclehead pal at base and expect quality work from them, hardworker, slaveworker skills, diet lover etc, are there to improve base management, but you didn't play deeply enough to learn all this Mecha that make the game deeper, just like i was when I started. I ignore passives because I didn't want to waste time looking through them and optimizing builds and just wanted to enjoy the game as is with pals I liked, and it took me getting the loopmon with 3 golden passives and seeing the extraordinary improvement he brought to my qol, that made me dive deeply into that mechanic, it's why you should keep catching more pals, so you get one with good passives, it's why you breed, another area I chose to ignore untill I decide to breed a grizzbolt, after which I switched to getting a pyrin noct with for golden passives, dragon killer, ferocious, swift hardened skin. And I loved the game even more.
You're too busy mocking the superficial amalgamation of different games that you forget to look at other deeper areas of the game. And came out with this poorly researched take on the game. Palworld is a knockoff, no one denies this even the devs, but what it is, is not a cheap knockoff, it is meticulous, it is detailed in so far as an early access game can be, anf has a fantastic core gameplay loop and side activities to make the main loop more interesting, dungeons need more revamping to stop being just the same layout but with magma this time instead of water, and a good number of tweaks that ate definitely down the line.
TLDR: your review is based on a conceptually lacking idea of the game it's mechanics and overall outlook. The pals are not slaves, and live in co dependency with you, you provide them direction they provide you safety which is also a 2 way strem

    • @marrdreg7025

@@AndyMeetsFantasy You're equating grind with playing. The game is literally designed in a way that lets you AFK(SP) and have your pals do the actual grind work which is repetitive material farming. Even breeding is designed in a way that allows you to skip grinding by cross-breeding for pals that are too high level for capture until late game and hell - Even that is a waiting game, not a grind, for the timer of breed, and the incubation period. Now, you could argue that going for min-maxing pals with passive, and IV's is a grind, but that's an entirely OPTIONAL aspect of the game and is not needed at all for its completion in current state.

I haven't had this much fun in a game in a long time. I have 300 hours in it and enjoy the grind. I come from a long line on grindy MMOs and this is right up my alley. I don't need every game to be new and refreshing.
I do get tired of people talking about this game stealing. Its already been proven time and again this game didn't use assets from Pokemon and that those that accused the of doing so manipulated the models to fit their claims. No evidence of AI used. With that said, this game took heavy inspiration from certain games, like all games before it. Like when you mentioned the church looking like from BotW then saying it looked like from Elden Ring. Who inspired and ripped off who there? Pokemon built their whole franchise ripping off past games and even fan artists.
I agree with Asmond Gold. I don't care. I just want to play good games. This game doesn't care. You wont find any political agendas here. No wokeness or any crap like that. This is a grown up game using cute creatures no different than any anime being this is a Japanese game. People seem to love the dark stories in these animes set inside colorful worlds. This game is no different. The themes are dark but colorful. This a grown up game and people with childish minds probably shouldn't play it. If you dan't want or can't handle the dark humor go play your Pokemon game made for babies.

  • @noway1668

Having items crafted in a survival game is "time wasting"? You must be new to the genre... You are at a point where you can make resistant metal gear and still use low tier pals or "hold a button while waiting" instead of using the higher tier pals you are meant to be using at this point, that's on you. As far as having a connection goes, this point is ridiculous to me, I never felt a connection with my pokemon either, like most people, I just went with what was strong; the exceptions being Arcanine and Lugia. And copying from other games, as you even pointed out, is not new so why bother using that against the game? Taking ideas from other mediums has always been a thing, without it there would be no innovation. It's very hard to take your criticisms seriously when they are quite weak.
Personally, I love Palworld and hope that this causes GameFreak to step up their game. Buying their games at a premium price only to receive subpar content hurts to the point where I won't spend the money anymore. Asmongold is correct, btw. He is right for a reason I have already said, and one you also gave earlier in the video. Taking ideas from other sources of media leads to innovation. Without taking ideas from others SO many other games, movies, songs, etc. wouldn't exist (including Pokemon), so, no, Asmon is not wrong.

Pocket Pair was always a remixer/tinkerer not a visionary creative. Mizobe, the CEO is pretty upfront about it... he is not creative but wants to bring fun to as many people as possible. His main approach is meshing proven concepts together and find interesting and fun ways on how they interact.
And that's plain to see in Palword too. The audiovisual presentation is there and serviceable but it's adorably obvious where their inspirations come from. Mechanically though it's quite genius how they managed to force so many different systems and genres work seamlessly as a coherent whole.
The high schooler stuff is just a myth, likely lost in translation. The dev responsible for the gunplay had no studies in IT/Gamedev, only finished highschool and worked at a convenience store. But he was a self-taught enthusiast and made weapon animations he posted on Twitter, that's where the CEO started chatting with him... they offered him to help with housing if he moves and joins the team since Mizobe saw the talent and enthusiasm in him.
The plagiarism was always a weird angle for me. Since that hinges on taking ownership of someone else's work. With Japan's strict copyright laws and the worldwide recognition of Pokémon that's pretty much impossible to this extent.
Yeah sometimes they are too inspired to the point of being uninspired, but essentially Pokémon fans threw a hissy-fit over a compliment since it exposed how complacent GameFreak/TPC got over time.
Their general attitude is, we liked these, thought might make an interesting mix, since they are really good and you should try those too.
Really come to love this madlad devteam.

I won't say your review is bad, it's more uninformed, this isn't the kind of game that shows all it's cards in the 1st 50 hours of play. There is so much more to it...I mean you said they the game has no story...did you read any of the notes left by other survivors? Should have done some research if you weren't going to fully commit to playing the game though. Thus we have a review which is as lacking as the claims made in the latter half of your review.
