Marcus Garvey is credited as having said, "A people without a knowledge of their history is like a tree without roots." Such a tree is easily knocked down with even a slight wind and cannot bear any burden. Today we are confused by all the contradictory 'facts' with which we have been bombarded and are full of anxiety because we have no anchor by which we could be secure. I think this problem with history is rooted in the fact that a large part of society has abandoned the idea of absolute truth. If there is no truth, then history becomes, not a recollection or study of past factual occurrences, but a recital of personal opinions to be twisted to fit current mood and mores.

This is an interesting take as it relates to history, but if I think about history as almost being a "reliable institution", I think the problem we're experiences particularly in the US is more about a growing distrust of all institutions: government, religion, education, science, etc. We can now shop for the "facts" that confirm our biases easier than ever before.
