hey -- can you tell me just what Syd Barrett songs were played in this video? especially the 9:00 minute mark --i'm new to Syd Barrett .. what song is that?
The two most underrated telecasters ever are: ASATs and Japanese Fenders. I still miss my G&L S500, you can’t go wrong with G&L as the quality is always top notch, both on US and Indonesian made guitars.
Still have my G&L S500 also a asat tribute , no matter how many guitars over the years I've had and sold on at some point the S500 will always be my go to guitar 👍🎸
Really enjoyed this review. Your splicing of the same song with each guitar model was perfection. It really allowed the viewer to see a tonal comparison in close succession. I don't think I've seen anyone do that before. It must have taken ages to edit.
Another fantastic review Colin! Really appreciate your honest thoughts. I am a G&L fan, I own 3 Tribute ASATs because a store here in the US kept putting them on sale and all were between $300-$400. I have the Classic Ash, the Bluesboy (with neck HB) and the Special (with two Jumbo MFDs). The special sounds amazing, those MFDs are so wide-range you can get into HB territory (like a LP) and change the tone to get a really full Tele sound. And I have added Fender 4-way switches to 2 of them to add the valuable series position.
Thank you for another great video. Those G&L MFD pickups are the real deal. I have an ASAT Special with the Jumbo MFD pickups and they are some of my favorite pickups of all-time.
Thanks for the new vid. I went through a pretty thorough process of testing lower cost Tele’s and for me it was a hands down Sire decision. For my money that is. Keep em coming brother.
High fidelity is a great description of the G&L pickups. The drawback of the ASAT is that parts, like the neck, are not interchangeable with standard Teles, so if you want to mod it, you can not. My partscaster would have the Squier body, Sire neck, G&L pickups, 6 saddle ash tray bridge, and, Kluson tuners. Thanks for another great video Colin! Skoal!
Thank You, Thank You Colin, what with so many choices, it's so nice to hear and see a good comparison and Review. And a pleasant weekend to ya. Cheers, Michael
Just want to say, the Squire CV is a fabulous looking guitar! Absolutely love the olive green...I'd have chosen that one based on color alone...btw, nice review...
Thanks Colin, I really enjoy All of your Vids/Reviews! Your style, and your playing are endearing. After much research and test rides, my last Tele purchase ended up being a Pine AmPro ii. I Love it. Stay Well, my Friend 👊
Hey Colin! Discovered your lovely channel just recently and been in love with your videos ever since! Just a college student here waiting to graduate so I can finally afford one the awesome Les Pauls you reviewed. It's been such a pleasure listening/watching your videos while I do my studies. Take care yourself!
I liked the ASAT sound the most, and the Squier body is the nicest imo. And the Fender neck too. I made a partscaster with a CV pine body and Fender neck, vintage tuners and bridge. Guess the old school ones are my favorites. Excellent comparison video by the way!
I am with you on all of your choices with one exception and one addition: I would use the Sire bridge because I like the full barrel saddle look, and I would add that I would use the wiring harness from the Fender guitar as it probably has the big boy electronics. Great video!
Really nice that you summoned Syd Barrett for the sound samples. Also, I'm a happy owner of the Blues Boy version of the G&L ASAT, Thinline with humbucker at the neck, and I really like this guitar! Very pleasing to play and beautiful sound.
Hi Colin , what a fantastic full on comparison on Telecaster style guitars . Loved your playing on each guitar . To my old ears I loved the tone of the G&L followed by the Sire , the others just so close in sound . Brilliant job again 🎸🎸🎸
I’ve loved Telecaster’s from a very young age, because of Rick Parfitt. The classic colours always look good but the olive green really does look great. I’d take that one simply because it’s a different than normal vibe that really stands out. Great video as always Colin and cool to visit an iconic shape and model of guitar. You can’t beat a Tele! 🤘
Colin great comparison! Even though I've never been a Telecaster guy I can still appreciate them for what they are. I can see why you're keeping the olive drab green squire with the binding cuz that's the best looking one of the bunch in my opinion. Cheers! 👍 well done!
It was interesting hearing each guitar sound a bit different yet still sound like a Telecaster for the most part. It seems that you couldn't go far wrong with any of these. If I do get a Tele, I wasn't planning to but I get tempted, I would want mine in butterscotch blonde. For me, part of the desire to get a different guitar is to nod to history, so I have a preference for the most historically iconic colors. That's why my 335 is in cherry. If I were to get a Les Paul I expect for that reason I would go for either a traditional burst or a gold top. Anyway, I'm looking forward to your budget model comparison to see if one of them can tip me into full GAS. Thanks as always for the great videos.
Great comparison. Loving it... got yourself another subscriber :) The way I figured this si: The difference between CV and Affinity (where I live) is EUR 285. I bought used one, so the difference went up to 310. So I just changed to original Fender parts: - pots + 4-way switch: EUR 60, - PUPs to Fender Ultra Noiseless Vintage: EUR 160 set (if you go Tex-Mex way it will be EUR 70 cheaper and some prefer true single coil) - Fender American standard tuning machines: EUR 50 - bone nut + a good setup (do it yourself or pay for it). The total came to EUR 270 + the setup which is about EUR 20 where I live. At the end the bridge and the wood are the only things Squier on it. AFAIC the bridge does the job and, if you pay attention when buying, the neck on an Affinity can be quite good too (apart from the fretwork, which can be corrected) ;)
I really appreciate how much detail you put in your reviews. I currently don't have a telecaster and was looking at several models for myself. (most of which you have reviewed here). What I am really trying to say is thank you for doing what you do and keep up the good work.
Thank u 4 the review, splicing hairs on the different teles it is a joyfull way to go. Each its own. I loved the darkness of the tokai and the tele player.
I have the G&L. It cuts through fine, and you can go balls out without worrying about being too bright. It's all in the fingers anyway. I have no regrets😁👍. Love the tone!❤
Hi Colin, thanks for another great vid. I do like the look and sound of that G&L. Really look forward to your look at budget T types though. I will be very interested if you do cover Fazley and Jet guitars: think they are made in the same factory? Been reading about / looking at both brands online for a while with interest but never seen either in person yet: spec and build quality does look good and at price where changing p'ups, tuners or saddles if not as desired would still keep em in the budget range. I reckon a good few of your subscribers, like me will really enjoy your budget tele vids. Keep it up Colin! Cheers Wayne
The Squier Paranormal Teles are great, I prefer them to the CV Teles which I’ve also owned. I have a couple of pricier Teles, but the Paranormal Tele is still one of my favorites and well worth checking out. Good comparison, thanks! ✌️
Great fun, this comparison! I’m happy you could appreciate the Player Tele, after being a bit thrown off by the bridge and the tuners. I love my Squiers CV’s too but i think the Players stands out in over-all build quality.
Hey Colin! Another banger video/comparison. It's my understanding that G&L uses the same quality pups in both the American and Indonesian guitars. The G&L sounded the best to my old ears!😊👍
Well that was a lot of fun! I think the G&L comes closest to ticking all the boxes for me BUT wish it had a rosewood fretboard. I also really like the Squier, the colour / trim and esp. neck pick-up (screaming out for a Uni-Vibe to go thru!). And I do like the look of the Sire body scheme - it's the only one I have actually tried in the shop but it just didn't do it for me at all - felt very 'thin' sounding thru the Fender Twin, which is an amp I know well. I think Fender have a more upmarket Tele with identical off-white / tortoise shell, rosewood (or maybe laurel?) neck - that would be my Tele pick if I do ever get around to it.
Greetings from Hungary! Just wanted to say what a wonderful comparison video you've made. I recently watched your video on the ASAT and enjoyed that too. Nice playing to boot and great cuts/edits.
As the owner of a modified Harley Benton Telecaster, a heavily modified Squier Affinity Tele, and a green Partscaster Tele, this video spoke to me. Great video as always!
I bought a squier classic vibe 50s tele 3,5 years ago. i changed the picks ups to hand wound local pickups ( a company named kauffman guitars from holland they make beatifull guitars to!) and now my squier sounds amazing, it already played amazing and is still my number 1 go to guitar.
I've had a number of Tele's over a span of 40 years and I still have a custom and an early Squier. I also have the same white Fender Player Tele with the maple neck and I'it's just great. Furthermore, I put a white one-ply pick guard on it and it gives it such a pristine, clean look. If I had to choose only one guitar for the desert island, it would be this.
I agree that the Sire is very bright sounding, but that feels like one of the biggest aspects of the Telecaster. Bright, twangy, etc. I like it's neck the best to look at. Also people complaining about a 4-600 budget, I think the price range is reasonable. Sure you can find $1-200 guitars, but there is a lot of risk there. I've seen reviews of folks playing gems from companies like Firefly, but usually that ~$500 or so range is a pretty safe bet. Considering you're looking at a minimum $1300 for the Gibson name on the headstock or $800 for Fender,, it's a solid point to review around from well known companies.
Kudos for this one, Colin 👏 I was really looking forward to the tele shootout and you didn't disappoint! Can't wait to hear the cheap competition next time, maybe you could throw the Squier in there just for reference? I especially appreciated the back to back bits of each guitar, which makes the comparison much more usable. Sure must have taken a lot of work but worth it IMO! If I should only choose one, I'd go with the G&L because of the excellent pups, individual brass saddles and a classic maple neck and board. Lookwise the Squier and Sire are killer for sure and the Tokai natural Alder body is beautiful, too. Cheers!
My favorites either the Sire or G&L....Love the Sire roasted maple, rolled edge /neck/fingerboard and locking tuners. Also love your playing Barretts's Astronomy Domaine !
I love Telecasters and I have 5 of them myself (1 Mexican, 2 Japanese, a self-build and a Chinese cheapo thinline which is surprisingly good). The 5 you demoed are all good instruments and like you say you could take them gigging and they'd all do you proud. I think I would probably go for the ASAT, I think that sounds the best. as for the price range 4-600 is affordable for most people but the Fazeley Telecasters are probably the ultimate in value for money based on the reviews I have seen. A couple of hundred quid gets you something very comparable.
That's good to know! I was curious about teles recently and now I really want one. I played a Fender Vintera 60s and it sounded really fantastic. The price was kinda high though. I wish I could test out an ASAT, but I can't find any around.
Great video. I am fortunate enough to own a 2000 American G & L ASAT Classic semi-hollow and love it. I was originally wanting a Fender Telecaster but after trying the ASAT, I was no longer interested in the Fender. Really, the ASAT was Leo's improved version and last iteration of the Tele. I think the pups in it are unreal and every pole piece is adjustable; they are the best single coils on the market, in my opinion.
If anyone is a fan of the Telecaster, your review is an absolute must-watch. I highly recommend your content to anyone interested in learning more about this amazing guitar. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us!
One of the things that keeps me coming back to your channel is how you demonstrate a guitar by actually playing music on it, and pretty damn good too. No flashy twiddley twiddley, just nice fat chords and interesting progressions - actually music.
Great well edited and planned video Colin! For me right from the start I had made my mind up on sound alone. There wasnt so much obvious during the back to back first bit of playing on the bridge pups but for me what nearly always lets the tele down is awful lipstick neck pups. This is where for me the G & L shone brightest, followed by the Fender. All subjective but although they all sounded damn good the G & L price / sound seemed spot on over all the sound tests. Cheers for another great vid mate.
Thanks for the video. My idea of a tele is brass saddles, bone nut and steel backed bridge pickup with an ash body and maple neck. Also creamy neck pickup. Just my preference.
"lime and limpid green....." can't go wrong with a bit of Floyd, and another great video. That Olive Green Classic Vibe is a great looking guitar, so tempted to add one to the collection!
You Sir, Roxor my soxors! Love your work. Had a hard day and it's fantastic to be home, where it's quiet, and relax watching another installment of your channel. You always have great information and the most personable style of presentation. We are all in your debt. Best Regards and Best Wishes!
Colin, try the G&L ASAT Special. I've had a 1990 USA version and a 2013 Indonesian "Tribute" version. The Tribute is still in my collection. They don't quite do the Tele twang, but with your love of P90s, I think you would dig the tones.
The Sire T3 is about the same price as the ASAT Tribute and Squire CV. Around $400 in the USA. For the lowest price, The Squire Affinity is really hard to beat. The body and neck are good. A good set up and new pick ups and it's a good guitar. The Squire Bullet is a thinner body, so if you want to save weight...The electronics are a little rough though.
Hi Colin, if you ever have a chance to pick one up, I’d love to see your review on a Fender Noventa telecaster. Single P90, string though body and brass saddles. I think it might be right up your alley….
Hello Nerd Central - Nerd 31643 checking in. Another great video Colin, thanks. I am a Fender Player Tele owner and love the sound of mine... I get your reservations about the new-fangled bridge and I'm glad to see that it has no real detrimental effect apart from the optics. Hot damn! That Green Squier CV is cool, huh?!
I never knew I wanted/needed a Tele until now, (I’m sure the wife would disagree 😂) loved the sound of that G&L. Loved your playing also. Thanks for a very watchable (and listenable) review 👍
Lovely comparison. It's the Fender or Squier for me, preferably the Fender. Had a CV tele, it was mostly great but decided to trade it in on a Player Tele. Super happy with the Player. Cheers!
I’m a hard sell. I finally subscribed because I’ve seen a lot of cool video from this guy now. He’s the kind of guy you take to guitar center with you when you’re buying something new.
Great video, and an interesting lineup. I think its great that the one you kept is the one you don't like the neck pickup on and you showed it's routed for a humbucker on the original video. I think a Keith Richards style Gibson humbucker in the neck mod is called for. I seem to remember you have some lying around as well. with the binding I think it will look great, and the green colour is really nice too.
Great video. I agree the Squier looks the best but soundvise i prefer the Fender Player. That glassy sound is so sweet. Put thoose pickups in the Squier and im good.
You sent me to Jupiter and Saturn playing those SYD Barret bits. I love piper at the gates of dawn, very special album as was SYD. No SYD no Pink Floyd.
Delightful to hear so much Syd Barrett playing!
The Tele’s had to love being played so well.
Yeah I thought I noticed a bit of Johnny Cash in their as well 👍
Had me wailing along on the chromatic rundown, it did. Happy days!
Great stuff Colin, Thanks.

I’ve got a Fernandes The Revival Thinline Tele from the factory just before Fender took it on. It’s an amazing guitar.
not many know about them is what I think it is, I only found out recently
Still have my G&L S500 also a asat tribute , no matter how many guitars over the years I've had and sold on at some point the S500 will always be my go to guitar 👍🎸
The Japanese Fenders are fantastic.
@@catmandoodoo7903 I had a Fernandez. It was pretty good.
Really enjoyed this review. Your splicing of the same song with each guitar model was perfection. It really allowed the viewer to see a tonal comparison in close succession. I don't think I've seen anyone do that before. It must have taken ages to edit.

Another excellent watch! You're the best, Thanks Colin!
High fidelity is a great description of the G&L pickups. The drawback of the ASAT is that parts, like the neck, are not interchangeable with standard Teles, so if you want to mod it, you can not. Thank you! 😀
I have watched several of your reviews. I really like them, in how you go through the details in your style and viewpoints. ❤
Thank You, Thank You Colin, what with so many choices, it's so nice to hear and see a good comparison and Review. And a pleasant weekend to ya. Cheers,

Just want to say, the Squire CV is a fabulous looking guitar! Absolutely love the olive green...I'd have chosen that one based on color alone...btw, nice review...

Still would go for the Squire CV and I think it looks best as well - well done this series Colin. Worth the wait mate.
Amazing channel. It is obvious you really love guitars... and me too! Thanks for the work!
I enjoyed your Astronomy Domine moment in this video - the entire video was enjoyable, but that part made me smile.

That's good to know! I was curious about teles recently and now I really want one. I played a Fender Vintera 60s and it sounded really fantastic. The price was kinda high though. I wish I could test out an ASAT, but I can't find any around.
I'm so curious about how the T3 compares to the classic vibe or g&l. Looking forward to the next one!
Well done comparison, covering them under equal circumstances. Long live Syd!
Agree
Thank You for this amazing video Sir. The G&L Tele is beautiful. Love the power of those pickups. Sire is very nice as well.
If anyone is a fan of the Telecaster, your review is an absolute must-watch. I highly recommend your content to anyone interested in learning more about this amazing guitar. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us!
Thanks George that's appreciated!
One of the things that keeps me coming back to your channel is how you demonstrate a guitar by actually playing music on it, and pretty damn good too. No flashy twiddley twiddley, just nice fat chords and interesting progressions - actually music.
Thanks, that’s appreciated! 😁👍
😎👍
I keep coming back to the Sire for its out of the box playability.
Cheers man, hope you have a great weekend! 😎👍
Colin, try the G&L ASAT Special. I've had a 1990 USA version and a 2013 Indonesian "Tribute" version. The Tribute is still in my collection. They don't quite do the Tele twang, but with your love of P90s, I think you would dig the tones.
Very fun video, thanks! I'm looking forward to the next Tele shootout. I would choose the Fender for the sound and pedigree.
I love my sire t-7. Would change pickups at some point but no rush
Enjoyed this. Excellent. Ive got a few. Nice playing.
Both my American made and Indonesian made G&L ASATs are my number 1 and number 2 guitars. I love them.
Brilliant comparison review, I went and bought the Fender on the back of it. I thought it had a bit more guts but not much to be fair. Many Thanks 👍
Always great to hear a bit of Syd!
Cheers!
Nice roundup and comparison - inspired choice of tunes - esp Syd! 😎
Yes yes yessss, great solo from you🙌👏👏👏great review 🤘🤘🤘
😊🙏
Great vid. Love to see some customs and delux models
I’m a hard sell. I finally subscribed because I’ve seen a lot of cool video from this guy now. He’s the kind of guy you take to guitar center with you when you’re buying something new.
often finding myself come back to this video just to listen to 8:38
Great stuff Colin! all the best. :)
Good call! 👍👍
Great video. I agree the Squier looks the best but soundvise i prefer the Fender Player. That glassy sound is so sweet. Put thoose pickups in the Squier and im good.
Top job fair play!..the squier, sire and tokai in that order 👏
Absolutely love the choice of music!
Amazing playing. Great review.
At the 9:07 mark on the Squire and onward, you sound like Mark Knofler.
Just great
😊🙏
The best thing about this review is listening to you play. It's gorgeous.
😊🙏
Well that’s appeased my curiosity for another week. All good clean fun!
It’s Friday and it’s a telecaster extravaganza so you have got my full attention again.
You sent me to Jupiter and Saturn playing those SYD Barret bits. I love piper at the gates of dawn, very special album as was SYD. No SYD no Pink Floyd.
