The drummer, Roy Halliday, is my oldest friend. He has been doing this forever, and just gets better. I really enjoyed What's Up Big Band. Great musicianship, great arrangements, great execution. Bring us more! Mezz
Thank God for musicians who are keeping up the tradition of the big bands. I respect that. I was the only kid in my 2nd grade class who loved big band more than the Beatles.
your lucky. i have to hear alot of crazy things that is going out there in the music world now days. im only 29. i enjoy hearing this kinda music. love hearing the swing especially the sing sing sing. so uptight and good beats.
I live for this stuff. We're in an area where we have access to the Melbourne Municipal Band in Florida, and they're also doing a great job in keeping this music alive.
I am in your age range and play in a group like this. It is amazing how much music is still available for 'big bands.' (Much of it out of copyright so people 'share')
It's chronologically weird to see a band playing music popular in the war years sporting a drum kit that prominently displays its Japanese identity. Congratulations on organising the band in your community.
I Think you Guys Are Doing a Very Very Good Job :) I Like your Singer :) he sounds like a combination of Frank Sanatra and Tom Jones :) He Does a Great Job :) My Suggestion, would be to throw away the sheet music, and play the music from the Heart and Soul have the musicians add any insperation at any time to the music, and have them stand up any time they want to, also, have the musicians swing their instruments from side to side from time to time, Really get into the music is what I am basicly saying, IMHO that would make your Band, World Class.
the effort is here! and some of you are bashing the criticism, but some of it is true! Rhythm section, get tight! Same to the winds and trumpets, please work on blending and becoming a solid cohesive unit. Most of this sounds awesome, but there are just some parts that seem to loosen up a little bit too much IMHO. Keep swinging!
I love the selections -- music from the big band era are the best! However, this band does need to concentrate on playing in tune. I also agree with Joe about blending and the rhythm section. Work as one solid unit, not separate sections. Good sounds -- keep the music going!
valamikor én is úgy képzeltem, ha nyugdijba megyek a szinházi zuenekarból alakitunk, jó kis big-band zenekart hasonló stilusban, csak sajnos a kollegák meghaltak, és csak egyedül maradtam. Szivembe örzöm a régi emlékeket.Tomy dorsey, Beny GOODMANN.ÉS A TÖBBI.
Out of curiosity I clicked on this video. Good instruments, nice set, good arrangements, but no swing at all. Musicians stall. Obviously musicians are no pros, but they do play their notes in tune. Therefore who is to blame? The musical director. He should practice with the band till he gets it. Or maybe the director does not have a feel for this toe music. Being an amateur DOES NOT excuse the lack of swing. They sound like a High School Band and IT CAN be fixed
What's up is right! Some of the tempos are agonizingly slow. The drummer has no push at all. Band sounds like it needs a blood transfusion. Needs lots of rehearsing to tighten things up and it's probably best to replace at least half the band with people who can play in tune. Sounds like the worst high school i ever heard. Sorry but I've been in the business over 50 years and have led a successful big band in NY for a long time. Lots of loose ends to tighten up.
Lacked style bad choice of songs and poor vocalist i thought when that woman was dancing she better have a good voice after all that jumping around to find she was not a vocalist she should have been thrown out
You feel right, their performance isn't perfect. They obviously aren't professional full time musicians.and the problem is lack of mechanical abilities to control the instruments, not too mechanical playing. But I appreciate their love for the kind when music was a real art. The arrangements are slighly altered and that's not good. They should stick to the originals and not try to change. It is history, should be respected. Shame for the american istitutions, they don't care, don't public.
For the critics... As a community group, skill levels varied widely in this group. Many of the serious musicians in the band recognized and agreed with the criticism in the comments. Let's just say that the leader of the band at the time was more interested in business than improving the music. After much drama, many of the skilled members left to form their own big band. I speak as an insider, serving as a substitute for this band some years ago.
I love reading posts from critics. It shows their shallowness. Enjoy what your hear . I suppose your is better with all the effort you have put into it
I think these musicians love music but their playing is too mechanical,a Little lack of the feeling of Count Basie or Duke Ellington.. Sorry but that?s the way I felt. Anyway I congratulate you for bringing us this eternal music, real music.
There are a couple of older gentlemen who are anticipating the beat. The brass section needs some tightening up. The intonation is pretty good considering.
You guys are too cool. I love and appreciate what you do. I would join you if I could. Set me a chair on the rhythm section side and I'll be there as soon as I can.
The spirit is genuine, my great uncles played in the big bands of the 30s and 40s. My great uncle John who passed away a few years ago at the age of 92 played trombone. Big Band music is an interesting thing, it can inspire and draw people onto the floor... To continue the interest in it with young and the young at heart. Most big bands formed today could use a clarinet and a driving rhythm section. Goodman in '35-'38 had the sound to strive for! :-)
Great to hear this big band play swing era music, and since many mention their age I am 71. Music is not about perfection as some comments complain I of course assume the people with their complaints are perfect?
worry not, I am half your age and absolutely love this. Real musicians will always be appreciated. Trends come and go, but classics never go out of style.
Awesome performance!! I especially like the saxes!! I really appreciate this big band because it brings back memories of my grandparents era, that are never to be forgotten. ^__^

Trumpeter Dave Mirigian was a great teacher along with Ed Kelley and Elvo D'Amante at Laney College in the 1970's!

The drummer needs to put away the chart and play the song, not the music
makes me want to do the cha cha!

An E for effort. I would also suggest getting rid of any bad arrangements---just don't play them anymore.
Keep swinging
What I'd pay to see Terrance Fletcher tear this band apart..

A big band is only as strong as it's drummer . . . . . .
babby hahh

The drummer has a similar name, but it isn't me!

They did not really exercise for "Sing Sing Sing"
The rendition of Sing Sing Sing was a bit hard to listen to, but all in all it was a good performance!
You guys are too cool. I love and appreciate what you do. I would join you if I could.
Set me a chair on the rhythm section side and I'll be there as soon as I can.
Lee - nice solo at 46:10! Enjoyed it. Which arrangement of Sing, Sing, Sing is that?
Chris Lawton
You can tell they are not professional musicians, but pretty good for amateurs.
Muy buenos instrumentistas, pero falta alma.Hugonlez
Where is the clarinet in Moonlight serenade!!!!

Nicely swinging rendition of I've Got You Under My Skin!
