  • After almost 45 years of wondering whatever happened to our beloved XY Fairmont, I finally found the answer and I didn't expect it at all. I thought the car was long gone, but up to 2009 it was still living a healthy life. The shot at the end is a still from onother creators video taken at the Gazzanats in 2009. The channel is hg5ltr and the link:

    Wow, great news Peter! I had a similar story recently, spurred by a rare and unplanned conversation with my grandfather. I tracked down my great grandparents' Satin Brown 1979 ZH Fairlane Marquis 351, that was sold in the late 1990s. I found the current owner through an FB group by describing the XA dress rings and hubcaps fitted by my grandfather, and modifications done at the factory as it was originally Ferdi Dominelli's personal car (3 holes drilled in the air cleaner housing, with a fan belt sat atop the air filter to make a gap between the lid and the housing). The new owner went out to the garage and sent me a picture, with my great grandparents' name listed in the original manual and date of sale, JM511 plates (of which I have photos of the car wearing), with service documents too. It honestly brought a tear to my eye. The ZH still wearing the original paint in near immaculate condition, too. My great grandparents passed away only a few years ago, but would be so happy to know that the car is still around. I hope that you are able to track it down. It's funny how serendipity works.

      @@PeterAndersons the current owner loves it dearly and I don’t think they’ll sell it anytime soon. Sadly, as we are all familiar with, I have run out of room, so I haven’t got somewhere appropriate for it even if I bought it. Maybe one day!

    I bought my factory manual VK Calais 5 litre from a dealership in Victoria in 2009 (I’m from Sydney) and being a factory manual V8 Calais I’m pretty sure it would have been owned by an enthusiast before me, I have kept it in close to standard condition since owning it and never plan on getting rid of it, but I often wonder if the previous owner is sitting out there somewhere wondering what happened to their VK just like you wonder what happened to your dads falcon

    I'd love to find my grandparents' 1970 XY Fairmont 302. Cyclone Larry transported their house's roof onto the xy, and they got rid of it for cheap. It'll be kicking around somewhere as it was worth saving.

    Nice one Peter. As I have said before, I found my Dad’s 1972 Ford Galaxie LTD in Copper Bronze (ep on my channel). My dad bought it from the Gov’t auctions in 1974 as it was Sir Robert Askin’s car (NSW Premier). Dad had it for 21 years then sold it when I was working in NZ for Holden. My brother’s friend spotted it in Sydney so I said put a note on the windscreen. He did and I bought it back i. 1999. I still have it and will never sell it.

    Fantastic! Especially when it has sentimental value. I searched for my XD, doesn't even register on the PPSR, but did find that my old U13 Bluebird made it's way from NSW to SA, but not on the road for many years.

    HI Peter congrats on tracking down your Dads Fairmont, I see in the comments that Dave / Davo has messaged you, I'm sure we would all love to hear how that conversation went hopefully we'll get to see a future reunion video if Dave / Davo still owns it or knows of it's whereabouts.
    It's funny where old cars sometimes turn up, I used to own a Cortina Ghia that I sold in 2001, the years went by and I forgot about it & figured it was long gone, about a year ago I came across some online photos of a Cortina drag car and went "hey that looks just like the one I had", turned out that it was the one I had.
    While I wasn't keen to see it had been turned into a drag car I was content to know that at least it was still alive and not crushed and recycled into a Toyota which was the fate of my first car that was a white XY similar to your dads, unfortunately it was an old rust bucket that wasn't worth much and not worth the effort of repairing at the time.

    Brilliant news. It would be fantastic if you could buy it back!
    I have created a replica of my late Mum and Dad's 1972 Vauxhall Victor FD that we had between 1974 to 1983, but own and have restored amongst other family cars (I still own) a 1978 Mark 4 Cortina purchased in 1979 ( and my first car) a 1980 Mark 2 Granada purchased in 1983 and a Volvo 740 GLT purchased in 1988, plus a 1989 Vauxhalll Cavalier GL and a 2006 Volbo S60 2.0T SE Lux. I fully appreciate the sentimental linkage to the family owned cars and the memories that they retain.

      I doubt I could afford it, funny you mention a Cavalier... I have a real soft spot for the (I think) MkII. I drove one around England in 1988. It was a blue hatch looking thing with a sunroof. I did nearly 100mph on the motorway - long time ago now, I was young and stupid.

    I'm sure somebody knows somebody and maybe some connections through car clubs or something can put you in touch with the owner. I found a VIN number for a 1988 Ford Mustang 5.0 LX I bought in high school and drove for 9 years and sold in 2001. Two years in a ski town was too much for it, the snow and ice wreaked havoc on the cheap Ford body and I drove the car sideways everywhere I went, got an Audi A4 Quattro instead. Sold it in Alabama for $2300. Much to my surprise, someone had restored it, painted it black and it was last up for sale in 2019 for $16,500, so it should be still around. Would I want it back though, probably not. Like women and jobs from the past, going back isn't worth it second time around. I would get another Fox body Mustang but not that one.

      If you have the VIN somewhere, you can see if they're still registered by doing a PPSR check. Best of luck Harvey. Oh, by the way, do you know what the resistance values are for the temp sender on a 1982 230E Mercedes?

    • @ellesmerewildwood4858
      @ellesmerewildwood4858 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@PeterAndersons I may have the VIN for the VR but no hope for any of the others sadly. As for the Merc, my data sheet shows 320 Cold - 22 Hot. But my data sheet doesn't specify a particular year, only shows Mercedes 230. If in doubt just buy yourself a 500 ohm pot from Jaycar and put that in place of the sender, then take the resistance readings on COLD and HOT.
      That's the same procedure I would use if I had no way of knowing the resistance though I have a dedicated variable resistance. Anyway, let me know if you need any further help.

    Pete, how do the car registration plates work in australia, are they generally on the car for life till someone requests a change or do the plates change with owners? ie will the car still have the same number plate?

    • @couttsy222
      @couttsy222 7 месяцев назад

      They can stay with a car for it's entire life but that would be in the minority. If a car gets purchased interstate, it requires new reg plates from that state. If it is old enough to go on a historic permit scheme (either 25 or 30 years, depending upon the state, they are issued with special Club Permit plates -- as can be seen when Peter drives towards the camera with his Victorian club plates on). If plates are stolen -- new plates. If the plates fade, that is usually new reg as well.

    • @billyhong5071
      @billyhong5071 7 месяцев назад +1

      If it stays registered in the same state for its entire life it keeps the same rego no.

      @@PeterAndersons I didn't know you could find a car with the VIN. Is that info freely available in Victoria because I don't think you'd get that in NSW. Here, we can check a car by number plate and it will tell you if it's still active or not.
