@Gerd L Plüü Exactly! Also this is a hobby and it's supposed to be fun. I'm not trying to find the most optimized combination of hardware, I'm trying to have fun with it. Therefore I went with Windows Me. As I said in the video, I didn't have any good reason for it except that I wanted to use it. I'm not gonna fight over what retro OS is better or more stable and optimized because I don't care, I care about having fun and nostalgia. And I hope I can translate that into my videos. Thank you for your support and I hope you enjoyed the video.
Those card is not worth it these day it cost same as RTX 4090 making retro pc build impossible for me. ATI Rage 128 Pro is cheaper although it doesn’t have dual gpu.
Bro! This is how i acquired my first 3dfx voodoo! At a random pc shop from a box of random cards, i just said to the seller “it only has vga output so cant be worth much right?” I bought that voodoo3 3000 for only 2$!
I didn't know the 3dfx voodoo 5 is were all that special I've got a 5500 edition I've never seen before it came with some free computer AGP input though
You say "S3 or Trident" as though S3 is on as low level as Trident. If you want to talk smack about something other than Trident, attack Cirrus Logic, cause S3 actually had some really good chips back in the day. The Vision series, especially the 864, 868, 964 and 968 were actually really solid chips back in the day, and were used in high end cards. Oh, and finding a Voodoo 5 for $10? Wow. Just wow.
You should not use the red washers while mounting the mainboard. They reduce the contact between the mainboard and the case and hinder grounding. Most likely nothing will happen if you do it (because the mainboard is still connected in many other spots with the case), but if the computer has "ghosts" or is not working stable try removing the washers.
3:42 - You are genius! Why did i never think of this? 🙂 BTW, using newer PSUs for old GPUs with extra power connector is not really safe because today power supplies have really weak 5V line with too thin cables, I burned one red 5V cable on a modern PSU recently when I was trying to overclock GeForce 6600GT, what I mostly do is cutting cables from old PSUs and solder it to new ones.
PS: I use Win ME for retro computers because it supports USB flash drives without installing another drivers and also mouse buttons back and forward work. Most of Win ME unstability was caused by istalling Win 95/98 drivers which mostly worked, but not always. You should try also Hitman 1, it also has 3Dfx API and nobody is testing it for some reason.
Windows ME is super underrated in my opinion. Yeah, I've learned that about modern PSUs recently. It's really sad because old PSUs become more and more unreliable.
@@TheEricExperiment It's not that big problem, but sometimes you will find GPU which uses 5V line more than today PSU producers expect, expecially while overclocking. I overclocked AGP version of 6600GT thru bios modding (because there was too strict limit for max frequencies in normal OC tools) and 5V cable in moles started smoking and plastic isolation melted down. GPU was ok, but it really scared me. 😀 But it makes sense when you realize that almost all modern HW uses only 12V pins, 5V is still there just for compatibility or some HDDs maybe. I also use 5V line for moding fans in older computers, you know, just put it directly to 5V to make it silent.
@@treehugs1yt Yes, but today PSUs just absolutely don't care about 5V and even today cables and molex connectors look very poor and cables have very low diameter. For 12V it's not that big problem because with higher voltage, current is lower for the same watts and modern GPUs have multiple 12V pins and connectors, but some very old GPU powered from traditional one molex can cause problems when you OC it too much.
You're talking about a guy who got windows and me when it first came out upgrade edition has defended it since day one but definitely should have went 98 I'm wondering though I'm trying to do another retro 98 machine and I've got a newer DVD writer and I cannot get the boot disk that comes with 98 second edition to make it work and get it to you read the CD and install 98 so maybe I should try me
Some of the contemporary 3D games of this card that I remember playing were Deux Ex (might have been the last game that supported Glide), Tribes2, Mechwarrior 4, Counter Strike, and The Operative: NOLF. 2000-2001were good years for 3D games, it's too bad that 3DFX would go under and get bought up by Nvidia at the end of 2000, but they were getting pretty far behind the curve. I managed to never have to use or build on WinME. I was very happy with Win2kPro's higher stability and ecstatic about the NT5 OS switch. We put it on everything that didn't need Win98 drivers to work.
Cool video. I managed to run Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 on a Voodoo 2 and a P233 MMX. Surprisingly, even though choppy at times, it was relatively playable. Unreal Tournament ran pretty terribly though.
WinME is an awesome OS for retro with today's mature drivers. Aside its known advantages, it even consistently beats Win98SE and Win2000 in most benchmarks. WinME+1.4Ghz Tualatin+9600XT ou Pro just for that extra oomph to go along with the CPU, solid as a rock, will take care of anything up to late 2003 and will look good doing it. I've never understood the DOS argument against WinME. DOS games are of course perfectly playable if you launch them from within Windows ME, which is more than fine for the games most people want to play, and if you're a DOS purist, why would you even run DOS games on a PC with hardware from this era anyway?... Hope you found your Tualatin+board combo Eric. Just skip the slotket adapters and go for a native Tualatin supporting board, not worth the hassle. Abraço
Nice build, but is an SSD a good idea..?? Windows ME doesn't have TRIM and it will slow to a standstill eventually. Plus ME it will try and defrag it and that's not good for an SSD!
I don't use it too often so it should be fine for a looong time. I figured that for my own use case I'd rather have something that will work reliably for the amount of times I use it than risk turning it on one day and the hard drive being dead. Especially because swapping the ssd is super easy and cheap now. But that's my use case, yours might be completely different. There's no correct way to do this except the one that works for you.

Hey, that was months ago, I don't really remember the name of the shop. They were focused on video game consoles though, they only had one little box with some hardware, I don't remember seeing other vga cards.
Sometimes you are just lucky that seller doesn't know what is he selling, I got my Ti 4200 like that, he was selling some garbage computer, but there was this GPU which I wanted, so I paid price of whole computer just for GPU and he was happy because send only GPU is easier than send entire computer. 😀
If they were to remake an NFS, I wish they did that one, I'd be happy with just a graphics update and maybe a few quality of life improvements. The game is nearly perfect. And the sound track is amazing.

What setup are you using to get those nice camera shots of the Voodoo 5? I to make old PC videos, but am still trying to figure out a decent solution. You seem to have it figured out. Good video also, that Voodoo 5 was an incredible find! Also how did you manage the VGA capture, it looks great?
Hey, Thanks for checking out my video, I really like your channel too! I have a slide for the camera that helps me get stable pans and zooms. I also use Warp Stabilizer on Premiere to get them more stable. That shot that the item stays still and the background changes is hard, you have to move the camera while changing the zoom in the opposite direction. For the capture, the best solution so far is a GeFen VGA to DVI that I connect to an Elgato USB capture card. It's not perfect though, I can't seem to get DOS centered in my captures. UIs are captured fine though. I guess it's a work in progress to get the capture perfect. I hope that helps.
