Thanks! Very unhappy with the speed here at 35MB/sec. For mirroring, do you know if it first copies all new data left ro right and only after that deletes all missing data from left to right? If so, you'd need the capacity on your second backup drive for the short-term bump in storage usage.
so I just got 2 14tb backup drives. one of which I want to backup say once a week. the 2nd backup once a month. since these are brand new drives, I am pulling from my existing source drive to "mirror left to right" to the new drive. When I routinely update this weekly and monthly, is it ok to mirror left to right every time? how does this differ from "synchronize bidirectional" or "backup left to right." They all kind of seem to do the same thing even when reading the software documentation.
nice video brother Matt, could you do a video on "reviving an archived project" type of video. been runing into issues digging back on old projects and getting them back online....mostly due to old bad habits I did back in the day...basically past-SJ completely screwed future SJ lol. THANK YOU! i love that your channel is picking up speed.
That's a good idea! Something I'll add to my list of ideas. I never really run into any issues bringing a project back from the archives, but I know it can be tricky for some. Thanks for the idea!
So I don't use the copy to library feature as I need all the media to remain external and indexable in case I need to go back to that media. In this instance, when ever I copy over a project that has files separated like this, I have to relink since the destination and source drives are different. I don't suppose Chronosync somehow changes the path directories in the FCP Lib package to match the new destination to avoid relinking those files?
@@matthewTobrien Now that would be a magic trick right? This is one the banes of my editing existence, you cannot simply use CCC, which I do, and have the app just pick back up without having to go through that ordeal. I use CCC btw to backup as well, I use the just copy it all over feature and not deleting just as a measure of backup from my Synology NAS to an 18TB Thunderbolt GDrive.
Overkill? Yes, however I have seen some reports of Synology systems going down and getting no support, usually in the UK. I'm hedging my bets with this system.
@@matthewTobrien Right? It's a great system otherwise, and so far, tech support has been fantastic here in the US. I've been running it for a year now solidly without any issue. I went insane level and got the 8bay NAS with eight 4TB SSDs, the WD blues were on a killer sale a year ago right before Christmas. The only sound this thing makes is the fan noise and I have it connected to a 10gig nic. This is essential for cutting 4k files. As a result, I'm limited to 20TB of usable storage with a 2 disk fail without loosing data. I'm hoping that SSD technology delivers larger format drives as I can replace with new larger drives when the time comes having used Synology's hybrid raid SHR protocol, that aspect of the system is why I bought it.
Some alternates and one gotcha. If you add any effects while working on your laptop or studio that's not on the other, copy the appropriate Motion folder in /movies to your external and then replace that on the other machine. So if you've added, say, a lower third on your studio make sure you move the appropriate motion folder so you don't just get the missing resource. on the sync: If you're using chrono sync to copy over library anyhow, save the media to the library. just rename the original library on the studio something like _backup and move the new library over from laptop to desktop. I know some people like to have their resources in individual folders but that means you'll need to really pay attention when you're copying files from studio to the laptop. If everything is in the library it's a single copy and finder manages the package contents. When I do this I keep that _backup until my final video is on RUclips or at the client and then I toss the backup file and just archive the main project. Set app really is the best. Have you used Permute? It's my new favorite app. It's a media converter that has a much better interface than something like VLC. Yoink is another new favorite.
Good tip about the the effects/plug-ins. Definitely want them to match on both machines. Fonts as well. Chronosync isn't copying over the library in this instance. The library exists on both targets and Chronosync is evaluating the contents of the library on the source target and synchronizing the differences to the corresponding library on the destination target. It's literally looking inside the FCP Library and then syncing over the files that are either *newer* or not present at all. It's pretty awesome. I don't prefer the method you described because then I have multiple FCP libraries to manage and name. With Chronosync whatever Library I initially created can remain, and I can simply update it with a sync if I've been editing on a different machine or drive. Just subscribed to SetApp a few months ago and am looking for recommendations for sure! I will check out Permute, although I use Compressor for most transcodes (as long as they're "normal" codecs). If someone hands me an old .AVI file, I've gotta bust out VLC typically. Gonna check out Yoink as well. Thanks for watching and commenting!
But do you need to relink everything at any point? Maybe you do this the first time when setting it up for mobile editing? Currently I’m using PostLab to work with another editor at my studio and we’re both attached to a QNAP NAS. I’d like to figure out a proxy workflow to be able to send out an edit to someone somewhere else in the world.
@@wiezyckifamily proxy workflows I haven't dealt with as it's just me editing. But I do the hard drive workflow often and I just copy the library back and forth. How have you handled syncing your Final Cut Pro Libraries? Delete and recopy to the destination drive? Come on, I've done it before too! 😝🔪🥦🧲🎞
So great dude! I really need to get Chronosync. Also Setapp.. Get this man a sponsorship!
Dude, gotta hook it up! Been loving my subscription to SetApp as well and they did sponsor a video last year! Thanks for watching!
I had no idea you could do this. Thanks Matthew!
You're welcome! If your projects jump from one drive to another and then need to be synced back, this is great for that!

Yes! That's awesome. Thanks for using my link, John!
Thanks! This is a great. Just what I've been looking for. Getting the app. Keep up the good work! Thanks again.
Awesome! Glad Chronosync will help!
Thanks, I like how you split up FCP windows in all your Monitors, I tried doing mine that way but couldn't find out. how
Super!
And soft Get Backup Pro is good for syncing, backing up content, and even backups and copying system files.
Another syncing app I hadn't heard of. Good to know!

Great breakdown Matthew! What a cool app. Definitely something I would look at getting if I ever upgrade from a single-mac setup 😄👊🏼
It works great even in a single-Mac setup if you're backing up your edits to a secondary drive. I use it just for that daily.
@@matthewTobrien I’ve always just relied on working off an external with FCP backing up the library to the internal drive. This is so much better.
Does this work for two different external hardrives?
Sure does.

Dont forget to select Verify copied data to ensure no errors during write process.
I’ll take a look at that - have used Chronosync since 2008 and have never had a sync go wrong. But I just jinxed myself, didn’t I… 😱
