    • @IainMcClatchie
      @IainMcClatchie 3 месяца назад

      We'll see the war being won on foot. But that's the first and last step and misses everything in between.
      The Ukrainians are still trading space for time. They may be gaining in Vovchansk but they're losing a bit more in Avdiivka. It's okay. They needed all that time.
      1. They had to convince the western world to give them weapons. Job done.
      2. They had to convince the western world to give them long range weapons. These have come slowly, along with the permissions to use them against Crimea and now, finally, against Russian military bases and logistics in Russia itself. Amusingly, Russia's thrust towards Kharkiv accelerated the Western acceptance of strikes inside Russia, and now that the bright line is crossed, the rest is just moving a grey line as conditions dictate.
      3. They had to wreck the Black Sea Fleet. As others have pointed out, by invading Ukraine, Putin exposed and has now lost the Black Sea Fleet which was the reason he needed Sevastopol and thus Crimea and thus the water supply for Crimea. Even Novorossiysk is no longer considered safe by Russia, and they are pulling out of the Black Sea wholesale. Ukraine still has work to do here, but they're making excellent progress.
      4. They still have to destroy enough of Russia's SAM systems that Russia has to choose between protecting it's other assets (like Moscow, St. Petersburg, and the approaches from its no-limits ally China), and protecting its front line and logistics in Ukraine. This won't be done until Russia is convinced that SAMs in theatre are unable to make a difference to their war effort. At which point, they're going to be very nervous about Moscow and St. Petersburg.
      5. They have to build an air force that can drop JDAMs for close air support and logistics suppression. That's (a) get the planes, job almost done, and (b) train the pilots, which is still a ways away, and (c) suppress Russian air defenses, which has just begun. It's going to be a rough six months when those planes get in theatre.
      6. Then they have to suppress the logistics to the Russian front lines.
      7. FINALLY, when all that is done, they can win on the ground, and we'll see them push Russia out. And they will do it on foot.
      All this is made possible by the Ukrainians who are fighting and dying and retreating slowly from Russia. God bless every one of them. I'm sorry the West is so slow.

    When I see on deepstatemap changes in favour for the Ukrainians, it will be reliable for me, that Ukraine advance to the north. The gap between the encircelt Russians and the ones next to them is only one street. From some videos there are 400 men encircelt and if there only 200 meters to the other Russians, there is a good chance that they can escape. Another question: This is in the area where the main defence area was. How can this happen? Why are you so optimistic? The major positive is, that the Russian attack has stopped. But I do not see any gains. Or is deepstatemap wrong?

      @@davefave4351 The unfortunate truth is that Ukraine, even with Western equipment trickling in, will still not be able to remove even an incompetent Russia from their entrenched positions. The main reason is because, despite all the equipment, Ukraine no longer has the shear numbers (boots-on-the-ground) needed to be able to accomplish this. It is my opinion the West needs to commit troops to this effort for Ukraine to be successful. Equipment is only allowing them to "hold off" Russia.
