Lord, Take This Cup (Original Hymn, 2022)

  • In 2019, a fervent prayer of mine turned into song and became this hymn. At the time, I so desperately wanted God to take away my pain and suffering. I wrote the following three verses that expressed how I was feeling:
    1. “Lord, take this cup if it be thy will.” I cried in despair, when my heart was troubled still.
    Then I heard His voice, so sweet and clear, “This too shall pass; I’ll always be near.”
    2. Carry me, Lord, through the darkness of night. I cannot go on without seeing the light!
    Then the words of His Spirit gave me rest, “Endure as I did; and ye shall be blessed.”
    3. “Sustain me Lord, I cannot go on!” I cried in distress, feeling all hope was gone.
    Then I think of my Lord, who came from above, to suffer for me through His endless love.
    In the last three years, I’ve learned much about suffering. I’ve learned that our afflictions sanctify and refine us. And as a result of enduring them, we gain experience, knowledge, compassion, and empathy. God’s plan for us was to experience suffering, because the only way we can achieve our full potential as His children was to experience these things. He loves us infinitely, and wouldn’t make us suffer more than what is absolutely necessary for us to “fill the measure of our creation”. When we are able to keep this perspective, we find true joy even amidst these challenges.
    I always felt like this hymn wasn’t quite complete, and it wasn’t until about two weeks ago when the fourth verse finally came to me;
    4. Lord I’ll drink this cup, if it be thy will. I’ll do what Thou asks of me and be still!
    I surrender my life, oh Lord, to Thee. For this I know; that Thou lovest me.
    I promise you that you aren’t alone in your trials. God is aware of you, and He loves you. I testify that you have people on the other side rooting for you and helping you whenever they are allowed/able.
    “I testify that when the Lord closes one important door in your life, He shows His continuing love and compassion by opening many other compensating doors through your exercise of faith. He will place in your path packets of spiritual sunlight to brighten your way. They often come after the trial has been the greatest, as evidence of the compassion and love of an all-knowing Father. They point the way to greater happiness, more understanding, and strengthen your determination to accept and be obedient to His will.”
    - Richard G. Scott (Trust In the Lord, Oct. 1995 General Conference)

    God bless you for writing this deeply touching song and singing it so beautifully. Or perhaps I should say thank you for being a faithful conduit because the Holy Spirit obviously authored this masterpiece. The message shows that you clearly know something about joining in the suffering of Christ, which every true believer experiences on this thorny path of exile.
    My wife and I listen to this song often, and we deeply connect with it. The lyrics resonate with us so powerfully because they precisely tell the story of what we go through in this walk as Christians. Truly, when we become followers of Christ, we are hated by all and forsaken by this world, as the Lord warned us. By definition, we as believers go through many trials and hardships, like all of God's people in the Bible. So many times, we cry out to God like you describe in the song, and His steadfast love gives us the strength to press on.
    The massive herds of false religionists prefer messages of prosperity, comfort and false confidence. They heap up for themselves false teachers to tell their itching ears what they want to hear and smother any twinges of repentance. They follow their pastors like rock stars and invest heavily of their time and money to feel good about themselves without having to actually submit to Christ or join in his suffering.
    In a right world, "Lord, Take This Cup" would be a massive hit with millions of fans. But as we know, this place is under the sway of Satan, and there are extremely few true Christians walking the narrow path. Thank you so much for blessing those rare brethren with your powerfully anointed work. Your reward will be great in the Kingdom that really matters, our heavenly home.
