"WASTE, MAN!" - parody adaptation by the Marsh Family of Sam Ryder's Eurovision smashing "SPACE MAN"

- Deep in our hearts, I think we all know that what we’ve been waiting all our lives is a song about sanitation and water regulation in England and Wales. So this is it.
This is our parody of the magnificent song “SPACE MAN” that was a hit for the charismatic Sam Ryder and very nearly got the UK their first Eurovision Song Contest victory of recent times when he performed it in Turin in 2022 (and it features on his album “There’s Nothing But Space, Man!”). The song’s co-written with Amy Wadge and Max Wolfgang. It’s a firm favourite in the family and was played hundreds of times on our summer holiday playlist...as his followers from TikTok know, the guy exudes positivity and has an incredible range. Whereas the original is uplifting and soaring, we’ve dived down to a new low to tackle a subject that has been all over the news this summer and deserves continued attention: the dire behaviour of water companies deliberately abusing storm overflow regulations to offload thousands of tons of sewage into our rivers, lakes, and seas (including the Channel, near us).

It notes the current pollution warnings for dozens of beaches, and the national Environment Agency’s figure (probably an underestimate by some margin) that “raw sewage was pumped into rivers and seas about 375,000 times in 2021.” The organisation that is supposed to regulate all of this, OfWat, has launched cases but is clearly not on top of the issue.
We also owe a shout-out to pop star and campaigner Feargal Sharkey for fighting hard to draw attention to the issue of pollution (see interview here esp. if you're a fan of 80s music: www.rollingsto....
We (used to) swim locally in beaches at Seasalter, Margate, and Broadstairs every year. We walk the dogs on the Saxon Shore Way and along Whitstable and Tankerton seafronts, and love spending time at Faversham Creek and Oare and along the Stour River, and visit sites at Chatham, Deptford, Sheppey, and beyond. There’s a lot of problems in the world at the moment, but polluting our own marine and riverine ecosystems and damaging biodiversity should not be one of them...and we’re pretty sure we’re not the only ones living near such episodes of dumping waste.

From someone who has done puppetry. The movement is to take the thumb down, not the fingers up.
This creates much less jerk in the movement. But it puts a lot of strain on the forearm ligaments. You can use a stress ball to exercise the thumb. But keep the wrist bent while you exercise as it stretches the ligaments on the other side.
You open the mouth for each syllable. You close it at the end of each word.
The use of puppets in your presentations is fun. Try one with rod arms too. So much expression can be added when the arms moving.

I understand the problem with Southern Water dumping millions of gallons of raw waste into the sea and rivers at Whitstable and Margate as have the privilege of living here too. Not being able to swim in the sea for much of the summer because it is full of human waste is awful.
You always manage to find the right news stories to write your parody songs, and they are always brilliant and make me laugh. I also love how you usually let the tape run on a little while at the end so we see the fun you have.

Very topical and well done Marsh Family. Its high time water companies did more to stop this unnecessary and damaging pollution and do more to fix the scandalous water wastage resulting from the outdated distribution network.

We've heard about this disaster (in Australia) and given our climate and experience with drought and water shortages; I really can't imagine a worse combination! Your fresh and salt water ecosystems are ALREADY under extreme duress because of the heat, and lack of water in the system, and then badly managed waste management turns those stressed and fragile systems into toxic waste dumps? (pun intended 😉)

Yep, I remember taking my kids to the seaside in the late 90s. We paddled in the sea and saw used tampons floating by... It got so much better over the years, but now it's nauseating. I won't take my grandchildren to the seaside now.

How did I not know about this until now? You are all so talented and really on the button. This should be broadcast daily on national TV and radio until the water co. bosses stop ripping us all off. I'd like to see immediate privatisation with no compensation. They have taken our money and just given it away to shareholders. Done nothing to stop the pollution. They do not deserve anything back. Amazing job, the puppet tosses were funny too. I'm reminded of that ad when I was growing up of a native looking at pollution and a tear coming down his cheek. (Yeah, you're British but I'm sure Mr. Marsh knows what I mean and I imagine the kids have even seen it.) I keep thinking more and more that the Lord is letting us face our own consequences. (Thankfully his grace is still there.)
