@@Yeroccoyeah, it's very common in events like this for there to be more than one interpreter and for them to switch off every half hour. So it's not that the guy was offended by the jokes or anything... but it was time for his break, basically.
@@AnxietyRatYeah, carpal tunnel and similar tendon issues are common for interpreters, so switching off helps prevent these issues by giving your hands and arms a break.
Much like singers or orators might take breaks to rest their voices.
Getting carpal tunnel is scary as an interpreter because it can take months (or more) to cure and you generally can’t interpret while you have it. At least not without extreme pain and making it worse.
Not only that, but if you have Deaf family and friends, it’s going to be difficult and painful to communicate with them.
The closest analogy I can think of would be if your career involved talking on the phone or making speeches and you lost your voice.
You’d not only lose your job, but it would also be very isolating.
So, we try to do all we can to prevent tendon damage and strain.

My daughter took ASL (American Sign Language) as her foreign language requirement in high school. She's really good at it and I keep telling her she needs to start interpreting. I could see her doing this on stage.
