Coldest game I ever attended. Big House half empty at half time. My 10 year old son was freezing and crying. A couple of nice Michigan fans gave him hand warmers for his gloves even though we were rooting for the Boilers. My Dad watched the game at home and told us after we got home that Bob Griese said that after a game like that, you just wanted to get done and stand in the hot shower for half an hour. Biabuktuka on one tackle on the sideline looked like boat in the water. I can't imagine how cold he was, drenched and 20s and high wind. Driving back to Dayton on I-75, we had 50 mph gusts cross winds, tough driving.
I was at this game as a 10 year old kid. We had to shake our blanket off every 2 minutes because of the sleet and snow. The coldest I’ve ever been in my life.
I lived in Midland and was in high school at the time and had tickets. My Dad refused to take us to the game because of the weather. It was great to watch from home though. Happy to say we made it to the Ohio St game.
I remember this game well. We had season tickets growing up in Ann Arbor and it always seemed like Purdue games had terrible weather; or at least this game made such an impression that I always now associate Purdue games with awful weather. I was in 6th grade and when you're 11 years old, things like weather don't usually bother you. But the wind was blowing the rain directly in our faces (our tickets were in section 17 in the Southwest corner of the stadium) and it ended up being one of the few games where we left early because it was so miserable.
I had tickets to this game. My wife didn’t want to drive halfway across the state to sit in the weather. I was mad at the time. After seeing the score and the weather, I admit she was the smarter one that day!
I will never forget this freezing game! I was there with a friend and it was wind chill city. I was not surprised by the score at all. Snow/rain/wet field big ten football. After the game we walked to the bar on Washington St. We drank a lot of strong beers (some shots too). I remember taking off my winter coat but leaving on my down vest for hours over my T and sweatshirts even though the bar was semi warm! It was big time cold at that game! Thank you for posting the video! Go Blue!
@Knightmessenger Bob Griese was in the broadcast booth watching this one but didn't do any play by play. I forgot to mention earlier that it was after this game that Lloyd Carr had the "Interim" label removed from his coaching title.
I had heard that this was the one game where ABC let Bob Griese broadcast a Michigan game with his son starting at QB in 1995. But obviously, this not the case as it was on ESPN. After, Driesbach got hurt against OSU in 96, they saw that he did okay with Brian playing so they let him and Jackson do all of the Michigan ABC games in 1997.
no surprise the picture isn't perfect quality...the weather was lousy. that play-by-play man, Joel Myers, has been the voice of Big Twelve football on FSN the last decade or so.
I really enjoyed this video, but there's no way the wind chill was -30°. Temperatures ranged from 54° at the start of the game (at noon) down to 35° at the end. Sustained wind was as high as 31 mph, and wind gusts were as high as 44 mph. A temperature of 35° with a wind gust of 44 mph produces a wind chill of 19.4°, almost 50° higher than -30°. Even an astounding 110 mph wind with a temperature of 35° produces a wind chill temperature of 13.4°, still far from -30°. To reach a wind chill of -30° with a wind gust of 44 mph, the air temperature would have to be only 0°. It wasn't that cold.
I watched this game stoned off my ass in the comfort of my warm living room. As a neutral party, it was a great game for napping. I felt bad for the kids, not that guys like Runyan and Alstott gave a shit about the weather.

The last college game to finish with a 5-0 scoreline.

I was there from beginning to end !

Proud to say that I was in attendance at this game. It was the loudest small crowd at the Big House.

I'm imagining it was a pain in the ass being that wet and cold, but more a badge of honor as a great experience.

I remember this day, I lived in Ann Arbor the, and I had to walk to my job at nearby Briarwood Mall after the game was over.
i love watching games like these...in my nice warm house
Usually up to par on memorable games in bad weather, I never knew about this game. Thank you for posting this.
This was BONE CHILLING COLD as Purdue and Michigan couldn't do anything I was FROZE SOLID before the end of the 1st Quarter
Kind of amazing that this game was played just one season before Tom Brady played at Michigan.
Griese has always been a classy guy
This is one of the strangest games I've ever seen...

Dear God, I remember this game. Wasn't sure to call it a defensive struggle or an offensive struggle.

Jansen was talking about this on the radio. What a mess🤣
he mentioned kalamazoo at the very beginning!! the city in which i was born
I was at this game...so cold I left at halftime.
I was at both, both were wet, but this one was much colder and windier.
I remember when I was a kid watching this game...This game was a nightmare! haha, but ill take the win
Michigan's next game was away, at Penn State. Did they have to resod the Michigan Stadium field before the OSU game?
love your vids!
WOW I learned something! when did Michigan and Purdue become rivals?

God created Mike Alstott to play football in weather like this!
