      @@spooks626 Sometimes it is the assistant that has to teach the Dr "how to train"...because Drs don't really know how to do it. It's strange,
      because in dental school, they had experience with slow, incremental training based on repetition and drill----so you would think they would have some appreciation of what is required to master a set of skills. It is my experience that Drs who played in competitive sports on teams or who have mastered the playing of a musical instrument, know the value of this approach but many others without that background seem unaware of what is really required to master a skill or how to train other to. Sad.

      Wish to find a dentist willing to allow me to rebuild my skills I went to school and graduated in 2001. I was fortunate to land a great job with a local Oral Surgeon in my area and I was thrilled unfortunately I had to relocate to another state and found it difficult to locate a poison there where I was constantly over looked for being out of state and less than a year of experience. I ended up accepting a position outside of the dental field because of the difficulty I underwent. I am now back in the state where I did my training and found that reviewing this along with on line studding is demonstrating the many changes that have occurred. I would welcome an office that would allow me to become refamiliar as a volunteer assistant. I have looked to see if there were any refresher courses but can't seem to locate that anywhere. Every job wants a minimum of 3-5 years and I regret not finding any viable work when leaving California and moving to Texas. . I love in Palm Springs now and am hoping I can re-enter the field . Great video and what a lucky individual to have had the opportunity to work with a Doctor who likes teaching. The doctor I had the pleasure of working with did the exact same thing he loved teaching new grads who had no real hands on experience. Shout out to Dr. Peter Lam of West Covina, CA.

      I don'tnt even want to go back into dentistry because these dentist are so crazy sometimes. They make you feel horrible. I feel useless. I've had really bad experiences even the assistants are extremely mean. I want to learn but was let go because assistants don't want to train because there scared your going to take their job.

    Proper training at each dental office is the key because every dental offices are following different protocol and each dentist has deferent rules and regulations to follow, I guess it will be much more beneficial to notify any newly hired team member specially the assistant to know exactly what the dentist really wants.
    # no proper training = not performing very well

    Wow I hope I come across a wonderful dentist like this . I feel I’m progressing so much in dental field but the dentist I work for is soo rude .She compares me to a dental assistant that’s had over 30 years experience when I only on my 2nd year and told me to be like her . Even from progressing soo much on what she wants me to do she will knit pick at any little thing u do like the chair not going all way back to where she wanted or if she feels I put too much topical on a swab or not yelling open or close loud enough so she don’t have to on a patient .those little things that I actually worked on she throws in my face when I’m back from vacation when I asked her why I wasn’t doing treatment or would get pulled out after I set up just for the assistant to go take it and deprives me from doing treatment and wants me to assist the dental assistant that she praises and do anything she needs. Basically being her door mat . I feel it’s so disrespectful and I asked her why it’s like this if any time I asked her after treatment or anything for her opinion she says it great but hits me with this in front of manager . She said she said I was great just cuz she gave up on me the 2nd month being there .

    I thought assisting was going to be so easy and that it would be a breeze and I'd be the best immediately and I was so wrong I could not believe how wrong I was especially when it came to simple things well what I thought were simple like suctioning in four-handed dentistry passing instruments things like that I was blown away at how much time it took for me to really get that down and it's not an easy task I know it's frustrating for Doctor sometimes because they've probably already trained a lot of assistants but just remember when you are training assistants that you going to get a loyal assistant as opposed to having to retrain by being a little patient and kind trust me. If you have if you have a high turnover rate you might want to evaluate that.

    • @garycarr1596
      @garycarr1596  2 года назад +1

      I agree a high turnover rate is indicative of things----most very bad things.......Being "the best" in anything takes time and resilience and the belief that all things are possible. But one can get to be very good very quickly if only the training is structured with some knowledge about how people actually learn and improve. We have trained old and young alike, and using our methods (one skill at a time, repetition, keystone skills, and sleep) and have never found an example where a person could not become very good, very quickly if only they (and their DR) believe in them. If anyone disagrees, I recommend you watch our other You Tube which covers it from a different perspective:ruclips.net/video/3lP7hpipN0w/видео.html

      Hi Rosie I been an RDA for 6 years and what I tell our new hires is "see where the bur tip is pointing to and with your suction place it where the water will be amazing. Usually your right across from the bur trying to catch all the water." For example if Dr. is working on a class 5 on #9 his but will be pointing towards the gums therefore you will place your suction gently on the gums facing the suction towards the bur. Your playing catch with the water. I hope this helps if you need anymore tips let me know I'm happy to help

    • @Rosietings
      @Rosietings 5 лет назад +9

      Monica Sheldon wow thanks for this. People think it’s the simplest thing in the world but when working under pressure it’s easy to not know what you’re doing especially if you’ve been taught improperly. What do you do with patients who constantly “forget to open their mouths”? I’m usually really nice to them and ask them kindly to open their mouths but at some point they seem to just entirely forget and then I end up suctioning their cheeks or some portion of their mouths and then Dr gets frustrated. Is it me ?

    • @Monica-il3rg
      @Monica-il3rg 5 лет назад +1

      @@Rosietings try putting a bite block the pt can even nap! Sometimes even with the mouth prop you have to continue to tell the pt. I usually tap their shoulders and after a while everytime I tap they open automatically I dont even have to say it. Also you can try using the saliva ejector to retract the lips and suction with the HVE. For example on the left side regardless if its upper or lower I use the small suction to pull the lips away (pull towards you) that way my big suction won't suction the lips and plus is that you can see better

    • @rubyruby6358
      @rubyruby6358 4 года назад +3

      @@Rosietings Hi Rosie. The advice above from Monica is spot on and a bite block works wonders. Patients usually appreciate the block as it helps them to stay open without any effort. May I suggest you use your mirror to retract to get to excess saliva or water so you can see more clearly and also hold the cheeks away so you won't suction them. Some patients do forget you have to get in there to work on them. Also, don't fight with the tongue when the dentist is working on the lower right. Use your mirror to block by pressing on the gums/creating a block, not trying to drag the tongue towards you. Remember they are numb and usually can't feel where their tongue is going. Good luck and hang in there but mostly find a nice, kind dentist (there are many out there!) to work for. Your skills are in high demand right now.

This should be taught in dentistry school. This is the kind of Dr I would be so honored to work for until retirement. Education, with patience. Understanding and a willingness to learn from mistakes. It is a win win for all and creates a long term dedicated employee who is invested and proud of their work.

    From my dental experience, a person who walk into the office without experience won't learn, in 7 days impossible, I know this because I teach DA's and also train them. The most they do is clean instruments and operatories by the first week. Its easy to say but communicating with patient its impossible.

    • @garycarr1596
      @garycarr1596  6 лет назад +16

      For some, no doubt, it is impossible. For others, who follow our protocol, it is indeed possible and has been repeated
      in many endodontic offices. The 7-day claim concerns learning the necessary motions to operated efficiently under a microscope. It's a subset of skills that is easy to master, given an envoronment conducive to learning.
      If after 1 week, all you can train an assistant to do is clean instruments, I'd re-examine your training protocols.

I'm talking from experince, I been a dental assistant for about 10 yrs now and I believe that I'm still learning every day, I try to perfect my skills, I worked in general dentistry and now I work as a oral surgery assistant, and it took me all this yrs to become the super professional that I am. I believe that in 7 days you can give on idea of how to become and DA but not to make a DA. Dentistry for many people is really scary, (as a patient.) You dont want to throw someone with no knowledge to work on peoples Mouth.

      For sure, there is more to being a DA than just passing instruments. But within a certain subset of defined parameters, you can train almost any DA to perform at a very high level within that subset of parameters. The point is, most endodontists (the only experience I have ) don't train their people professionally. They train them on the fly----and then wonder why they are not well trained. High skill in this field is attained by professional, focused training, repetition, and learning one skill at a time---just as the video outlines.

      In some states the scope of practice is different , You cant teach a DA to do a dental filling in a week , you cant teach a DA to be a dental anesthesia assistant in a week , you cant teach a dental assistant to be a Orthodontic therapist in a week . Sad that over sea's that DA's / Orthodontic therapist and Dental anesthesia assistant are ss considered to be a professional careers , but here in the states most dentists / American dental association still think DA's are glorified spit suckers . smh

    how does the doctor allocate time to train the nurse?

    • @garycarr1596
      @garycarr1596  2 года назад +1

      One misconception about training is that it takes a lot of time. It isn't the length of time, but its frequency, that is the key. Another misconception is that proper training can be done on the fly. WRONG! The tenants of good training are:
      1. Dedicated time where there is only the Dr and assistant: totals focus with no interruptions. Excellence takes focused attention and dedication.
      2. Master skills one at a time. One per day. Repeat every day.
      3. Practice blindfolded.
      Keep sessions short---30 min is fine----but every day or even twice a day.
      4. Understand it is an iterative process---incremental progress based on repetition and small wins and Keystone skills.
      These are the things that are involved in training a person professionally.
      Most dentists have no conception on how to do this and therefore have no idea on how to actually train a person for excellence.

    Young girls help. From my experience they are not reliable workers but find the right one and they will be easy to train, quick on their feet unless you have a da that's been assistanting for a long time. But older ones 40 + that have no clue of the industry will struggle as I've seen.

    • @garycarr1596
      @garycarr1596  6 лет назад +9

      That actually has not been my experience. It may very well be that you have to approach an older assistant differently, but there are advantages as well. Older, experienced assistants know more, have a better sense of how things can go downhill quickly in the op, and have a clinical grounding that makes them eminently teachable.Many older assistants want to learn new things, appreciate getting out of their rut, and appreciate the time you take with them to learn a new, better way. In some ways, they are more teachable----as soon as they realize our method will vastly improve their clinical life and their ergonomics.

      Gary Carr It depends of type of practice. A standard 9-5pm laid back practice with too many staff on 1 shift i.e a receptionist, an assistant and sometimes a sterilization assistant with only one chair in operation is easy for anyone and where older assistants thrive. A practice that involves a shift which ends up with 1 assistant occasionally doing everything - reception, sterilizing and assisting as well as accommodating to emergency appointments is well suited for a younger person. This is a lot common in Aus and NZ. The practices I worked in were a fast paced moving environment that requires people to be quick on their feet, efficient and able to multitask. You could not imagine a 50 year old running around like that sorry unless of course they were fit and had a lot of experience under their belt.

      kris c In my experience, this role is more suited for a younger person than an older person. You wouldn’t put a younger person up for a bigger role like a manger. Dental Assisting is an entry level job.

    • @garycarr1596

      @@nostalgia9338 You clearly have a different conception of who a dental assistant is and what they do. When you are part of a team, there is no such thing as an "entry-level" job.
