  • Himachal Pradesh has its own peculiar Architecture ranging from the coldest to the hottest regions , depending on one’s personal interests in building homes and commercial properties. The upper Himachal , is quite different geographically & culturally from its lower counterpart and same thing applies to home ideas, designs & architecture.
Houses in upper Himachal regions subsequently make use of abundant woods of Cedar deodar which not only keep them warmer but are fragrant too. The cedar wood is highly durable and resistant to termites and other possible defects.
Modern houses are built up using Brooch , a special stone replacing the conventional plastering, thus eliminating the need of maintainence regarding wall painting and putty. Apart from that, since the snowfall is a natural phenomenon, slanted Tin fabrication is highly used to provide an overall conical or V / W shape which in turns drains any accumulated rain water or melting snow. In rural regions of upper Himachal, it is a widespread architectural tendency to use specially chiseled squares stones to build a slanted roof. The purpose behind this kind of construction is economics as well as utilising abundant rock pieces in such remote areas where possibilities of modern construction are meager due to lack of motorable roads.
In upper urban areas, it is not uncommon to see highly sophisticated and modern expensive houses duly constructed using costly cedar wood and native brooch rock with fabricated tin roofs. However, in Lahaul and Spitti & few areas of Desert Kinnaur, it is practically important to build such designs which not only keep the residents warmer in long winters but also fullfill their storage needs as there regions are cut from rest of the world in harsh winters. People in these areas build home on a traditional Tibetan architecture and Buddhist artistic impression can be easily seen. They use wide variety of materials to fabricate their houses. The use of stones layers one over another and internal plastering and wood furnishings are common.
