I forgot to add to the video that there IS a pre-show in the graveyard scene. I didn’t add to much but I only got to see this on my final ride of the day. Just incase you were unsure if anything is missed with using single rider!
I don't know why this showed up in my recommended, but it's fun to see that they are still adding cool new attractions to the Efteling. As someone who is no longer living in the NL and went there last in high school, it was oddly nostalgic. Thank you for the vid! Also I thought the girls in the background discussing the absurdly high prices in themepark shops were hilarious.
Efteling is NOT about the ‘ride’ per se. It is about the STORIES. That is why there is not waiting line, only a ‘waiting journey’ where the story already begins. (Same as f.e. De Vliegende Hollander, where you start in the house of the captain, then you experience his secret stash of gold and the smuggling tunnels, then the tavern where he did his shady business and only then you get to the harbor. After that, you set sail into the dark night, see other ships etc. You just wouldn’t call it just a ‘short water coaster’.
True, but having done the full queue line later in the day, I'm glad I opted for the Single Rider as because of the language barrier it really didn't add too much to the experience (for me personally). That said, Efteling do a fantastic job of making queueing areas nice on the whole. But that said, it is a short water coaster, but not just a short water coaster.
The cat is actually the shapeshifting monster that killed the orchestra. It transforms into its monster form at the beginning of the show, walking around in the dark. Funny thing is that this was developed the same way as the madhouse. Efteling had an idea and went to a manufacturer to see if they where willing to build this idea. Which resulted in Villa Volta with Vekoma, Vliegende Hollander with KumbaK and Danse Macabre with Intamin
@@TheNextOutingThe cat is explained to be the Unnameable in the… I wouldn’t say preshow… But on the graveyard, there is a voice-over that tells you the story’s rough outline. And that is only in Dutch. So I can imagine there’s a bit of a language barrier there. But, for the most part… Not much language is really needed for this one. Music is a universal language.
Coming up with entirely new ride systems is indeed quite unique to Efteling. I think it is also a Dutch cultural trait that you see reflected in projects like the "Delta Works". In the Netherlands they won't step away when something has not been done before. They will face the challenge and figure out how it can be done and gather all the required expertise and actually do it.
It’s really interesting how the Motion Stage is being perceived the new, modern Madhouse style attraction. Especially since both debuted at Efteling. I do understand the comparisons. Moving around a highly themed room in a really cool way. Being a mix of (family-thrill) attraction and show. Preshows (or in the case of Danse Macabre a very elaborate queue, with a short pre show storytelling section on the graveyard.
All the buildings in the area are newly constructed and consistently themed. The ride that was there previously was pronounced "spoke slot" (written spookslot), which translates to "ghost castle". It was an automated walk in show that was built in 1978. I loved it, the atmosphere, the theming and the music, but the technology was old and the whole thing became a fire hazard. Therefore they decided to replace it with something new. When Efteling makes a dark ride they mean it will be literarily pitch black. They reused a tiny bit of the old castle, but basically everything you see is new and was constructed in the last 18 months or so. They did a magnificent job.
Weirdly on my first Efteling visit pre-vlogging I found myself in the building watching the animatronic shows. An easy one to miss. I was unware they've pretty much started again with the building. Thanks for watching and please subscribe if you can :)
@@TheNextOuting They actually had no choice than to demolish the old building. The main show was not compliant with current fire regulations and from what I understood there were issues with the foundations of the construction. The show was not popular anymore, although still very popular within a circle of diehard fans. Staring over was the only remaining option. They still had a wish list from the original designer, thing that could not be fulfilled due to the fact that certain technology was simply not available back in 1978. The main component being the conductor animatronic. It stood out to be unobtainable in the '80's and '90's. They made several attempts but never succeeded. One of those attempts ended up being used for "De Trollenkoning", a small animatronic show in the Fairytale Forest. They purchased the animatronic but were not satisfied with its performance as a conductor animatronic. Therefore they used it for a different show they had previously shelved. Thank you for your video. I have subscribed to your channel.
No the building isn’t reused it is completely new. Only some walls (not part of de building) are reused from spookslot. You missed out some amazing theming by choosing the single rider. We have a video about the backstory online and on a short notice one with 66 hidden details at Danse Macabre.
Thanks for the extra info! I did actually do the main queue at the end of the night just before the ride closed for the day. The pre-show I couldn't follow due to the language barrier but still really enjoyed it. Thanks for watching and please subscribe if you can :)
The old building was in such a bad state that it wasn't possible to safe most of it. Only parts left are some rock you see somewhere in the queue or the exit I believe. The story is that the people at the organ at least the man is the family of jozef charlatan the gyluy You walk past in the queue he disappeared with his full Orchestra and has never been found. And they discover he has been take by the unknown and they discover that all and they give you a try to fight the unknown. The little cat in the queue with the yellow/blue eyes is the unknown. The ride system is the prototype. Efteling is know to have some prototypes. Villa volta is a prototype madhouse. Fata morgana is a unique ride fully constructed by efteling themselfs. And now they have the first platform ride in the world from intamin. And efteling has said they still are seeing what they wanna adjust to the flow of the ride. I'm happy the didn't do the default screen what's often seen with these kinda ridesystems.
Efteling will rather use animatronics over screens which in my opinion makes Efteling stand out compared to other parks. I love their creative choices. By the way, the new Dance Macabre ride was originally budgeted to cost 25 M Euro. During the whole process of construction and theming they choose to do things properly and that resulted in them spending 35 M instead. They happily went 10 M over budget knowing that you can only do it right once and you won't have a second chance to make a first impression. They went the extra mile because otherwise they would have regretted it. They delivered a world first and delivered it well.
I'm also a big fan of the lack of screens. There are subtle projections which enhance - but love that screens aren't plastered everywhere. It was just great fun all round. Thanks for watching and please subscribe if you can :)
Thank you for for the extra info. I agree, I'm glad they didn't go down the screen route too. Any media they use always seem to enhance (thinking of the projections in Baron here). Thanks for watching and please subscribe if you can :)
You’re saying everything in you can see on ride is above you… but actually, there’s a crypt below the ride system. It’s not that easy to see and I’ve heard the park is still working on trying to optimise the programming so you get to see the crypt better. But there are animatronics and such in there too.
Good to know! I had tried to avoid all spoilers so was unaware / didn't see much in the lower scenes, but it makes sense. Upwards as I said, is great with everyone getting a front row experience really. It'll be interesting to see what they do regarding seeing the lower scenes. Thanks for watching and please subscribe if you can :)
You are correct and I saw this on my second run through. I meant to put this as a graphic but forgot! The pre-show (most likely due to the language barrier) didn’t add much. But was a nice idea. Thanks for pointing this out!

Oh that’s really interesting. So was this added before the media preview day? I think once the initial hype dies down this scene won’t be run as it currently is, but still a very nice scene to queue through.
@@TheNextOuting Yes, I understood that the change was made after comments from the employee preview. then the narration of the story was added just a few days before the media preview.

The drop is a bit flawed and is supposed to drop down to the tomb under the abby. But Intamin has some issues working it out. Intamin stays on site I heard from people at the park to get all the flaws out of this new system. Disney and Universal have shown interest and visited Efteling to come and watch what this ridesystem can do. The ride feels unfinished. I do not think you can compare a teacups ride on steroids to a madhouse to be honest.
It’s been stated the park will continue to tinker with Danse Macabre’s programming. They will go into the crypts more. They will add a bigger drop. And they will probably continue to try and optimise certain seats so there’s not as little of a disparity between them as possible.
The drop did feel a bit weak but I just thought there were going with something to match the thrill level of the ride. I understand it's appear to younger ones. Interesting to hear they are still looking at tinkering with it! Thanks for watching and please subscribe if you can :)
