A little off-topic BUT the fact that you brought up their first name choice for Tex is hilarious to me, and only because a year ago I adopted a cat from a couple who had him since birth. 8 years they had this babe and when I asked what his name was they said "Idrk, sometimes we call him Blackie." ?! 1. This cat is mostly white with black mixed in and 2. You had a kitten/cat for 8 years and just never legally named him???

I remember reading these kind of books in High School for the heck of it. I think I read Maria at Christmas Time. It was like a Hallmark Christmas movie where the girl falls for the rich countrymen, and I distinctly remember this part they find a kitten out in the cold. Best part of the whole book. It's weird how I remember the animal in things... Like the dog... *In Garm Wars: The Last Druid.* And after doing some research recently, it's apparently worshipped like a god. Perhaps Garmi were dogs the whole time!
a lot of these older books are so r*pey T_T i read one that sounded great and i wanted to read about the hero and heroine getting it on in the jungle while running away from soldiers. but he was SO MEAN to her and assaulted her a few times! and it was framed as just being normal bc he was horny/she annoyed and/or misled him. horrifying!!!

You can really tell when the author is paid by the word
The longer it takes to get to the point in a book the better the book is
The way authors write often sounds pretty, but I find myself feeling grateful when an author learns to speak concisely AS WELL as prettily. You can use pretty words while keeping the description brief. You can also find words that sound nice, that people actually know the meaning of.

I read a book called "Born in Fire" by Nora Roberts. Dropped it after chapter three. The first chapter had me hooked with the wildest character death, but then the love interest is creepy and abusive and the main character loses development as she marries and eventually has a kid with Rogan fucking Sweeney. I literally skipped to a scene in chapter 7 where he gets so sexually enraged at the woman that he skids his car off the road and violently kisses her. I put the book down right after that. Then I read the next book "Born in Ice", which is much better than the first one but the guy is still a little creepy and the girl still loses some character development. I have no idea what the third book "Born in Shame" will be about but I am expecting a wild ride.

@@vijones usually, I'm all for sensitivity in language, but when it gets to the point where referring adding a -ie to a dog's literal fur color is racist it's starting to get to the same level as people who say calling your dog "a good boy" is racist because of how actual racists use the word "boy"
@@Enixon869 Well, it's not just a color adding"ie" pinkie is still fine bluey, etc. But bl*ckie has been used as a slur for centuries and still is in several places. So I can see why people see it as a problem.

I hate that the horrific first book’s title seems to be a play on words about nuns. “Black Veil Bride” is a woman who kinda marries into the faith. (Idk, I’m Protestant and Bi 🤷♀️) The title of The Blackmail Bridegroom HAS to be a riff on Black Veil Bride, and that author is either in hell or needs some kind of religious or moral system in their life
(In between these paragraphs, I thought “Authors in the 90’s were all criminals who smoked cigarettes” and “Keep the hard drugs away from authors, especially Stephen King. I feel sick when he crams disturbed shit into compelling stories.”

wait is naming a dog 'Bla**ie' after its dark colour offensive? Cause if so I have some old photos of the family dog with captions I need to redact...
I've never heard it referred to as such by anyone before nor used that way in any old movies that like to throw that type of language around for what that's worth. Since it's literally just a color with -ie added to the end I'm sure someone out there has used it like a slur, but honestly it kind of feels like acting like the name "Red" is offensive because some assholes call Native Americans various things using it, at some point you gotta stop letting racists claim every word as a slur or there won't be any left.
It's also the Japanese name of the Pokemon named Umbreon, I think you're fine. 😅
