- The Manager’s Villa at Stromness has become the focus for millions around the world inspired by the heroic story of the Endurance Expedition (Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition). It was here that Ernest Shackleton Frank Worsley and Tom Crean finally found rescue for their shipwrecked crewmates left behind on Elephant Island. To reach it they had sailed in the lifeboat James Caird to land on the southern shore of South Georgia and then crossed the mountainous, icy, unmapped interior of the island to reach Stromness on the northern shore.
The historic and iconic Stromness Manager's Villa still stands, but as one of the oldest buildings at Stromness, it is now urgently in need of conservation works to preserve it for future generations. SGHT, in partnerships with Friends of South Georgia Island and the Government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands, hopes to save the Villa and remove the oil, asbestos and debris left behind by the whaling industry that poses a threat to both humans and the island's wildlife.
This short film tells the story of the Villa's pivotal part in the inspiring Endurance story.
