Continue the hole and let the base be in the middle of the hole zombies wouldn't be able to pass it
Sadly that doesn't work anymore without causing the colony to be put into Seige mode, which uses like 20x food and they'd starve.
SpyCakes if updates didn’t break games because of what happens you could probably do that in your old world.

You should have made the day time guards defend the work areas and the nighttime guards the sleeping areas
