    I have known several people that have hunted and shot trap with the Maverick 88. No one had anything bad to say about them. Back when I was shooting trap we would meet on Thursdays and shoot between 100 and 150 rounds. This went on for several years, so we quickly figured out which guns and ammo had particular problems. The Maverick 88 was not one of the problem guns.

    Good choice, sir! The Maverick 88 is an excellent gun and an outstanding value. Edit 2019: watching this again. Realize I would have no idea how to put that gun back together.

    The opsol plug makes it so mossbergs will cycle the mini shells

    I expect you'll have some fun with that. I've had a couple Mossberg 500's (pretty much the same as the Maverick) they worked well. A decent gun for the money.

    I went with the field version of the Maverick 88 so I can use choke tubes. I absolutely love mine. A VERY fun shotgun for the money!

      I have the 18.5" Maverick. I love mine as well. I recently traded an 870 express + cash for a 1903 because the 870 was not as good as I originally thought. It'd get stuck with cheap Winchester bird shot. The same bird shot I have ALWAYS fed my Maverick without any problems. And the 870 rusted easily. They don't make 870s like they use to.

    You'll enjoy that a lot. I did 2 things on mine. 1. Got a choate folding stock (they make a top and side folder). 2. I got a 20 inch barrel with choke tubes. I wish the 18.5 inch barrel had choke tubes, but oh well. It makes a great pack gun.

    I have the 20" 7+1 Security 88 and I have thrown a 5-pos rail, a 6-shell side saddle, and a fiberglass/poly heat shield on mine. I thought about sling attachment but haven't done anything about it yet. lol.

    Hi from South Africa. This is how I discovered your channel. Was looking for opinions on the Maverick earlier this year and saw your take on it.
    At the time I could not make up my mind. There was a Mossberg 590 A1 called the "Blackwater Edition" at one shop for
    R 14 000 ( our Rand is currently 15 against one US Dollar) whilst the Mavericks went for
    R 7 000. The 590A1 was a good buy, it was old stock that was recycled, a guy had bought it but could not get a license from the police for it. We are a tight gun controlled country.
    The Blackwater gun had all the bells and whistles but the Maverick is short and handy, as I was looking for a gun to use around the house.
    I waited too long, the Blackwater was sold so in April 2019 I bought the Maverick and the waiting for the license commenced.
    Got the license 3 weeks ago and could pick the gun up. I am impressed with it and your review helped me to pick up a good gun for the money. Locally the Mossberg 590's now go for R 18 000. That is 1 200 US Dollar at current exchange rates.
    Only concern I have is that the cylinder bore spreads buckshot very quickly. We do not get good quality US shotgun ammo here, it will be too expensive. So we only get the third-rate European stuff. Their small shot is ok for trap and skeet but buckshot is another issue.
    Ordered a Lee buckshot mold and will try and reload. It will be great to emulate the Federal FliteControl we always hear about.

    Have this same gun I got to keep around the house and man is this thing fun to shoot.

    I was lucky to find a Maverick 88 with the full length hunting barrel and 18.5" cylinder bore barrel as a package deal. Love it to bits, the only problem I have is the damn thing is always empty and with empty shells strewn everywhere for me to pick up! lol.
    I have heard those mini shells can be a bit dicey to reload as they use quite a reduced powder charge compared to 2 3/4 shells with the same shot weight etc which is actually a bonus for component price. might be an interesting project to get into :-)

    I've purchased three Maverick 88's over the past three years. Two of them I gave as Christmas presents to my two sons.The third one I kept for myself. All three have been used to shoot trap and all three have performed flawlessly. Whenever anyone asks me to recommend a shotgun, I recommend the Maverick 88.

    Yeah, them Mossberg Maverick Model 88 is a very solid gun. The second gun I ever bought was a Maverick 88 security 6 model just like the one you bought, I dolled mine up though. The fourth gun I bought was a Mossberg M500 Police Tactical, that one has a 7-shot tube mag and a 20 inch barrel with a heat shield and raised front and rear ghost ring iron sights.

    Up here in Canada, removable choke tubes and 3"+ chambers rule the shotgun market.
    Largely in part to regulations that only allow steel shot for waterfowl hunting, which has killed interest in fixed full choked guns. If you in the market for one of the classics (model 12, Ithaca 37, 870 Wingmaster), its definitely a buyers market.

    I bought a bunch of old shotgun fiber wads at a gun show last year thinking I'd like to load up some of those short shells. Haven't gotten to that project yet. If I ever find myself in a barn with a dozen rabid raccoon I'll think of you. lol

    • @logcabinlooms
      @logcabinlooms  7 лет назад +2

      +Buckrun11 I picked up a big bag of cork wads one day, don't know how I will use those, but I figured I might never see those again. I always figured on getting some brass hulls for use in my old Winchester 97, they would seem appropriate for that.

    You wouldn't happen to have some Winchester model 67 parts would Ya? That's the single shot .22. I just restored one today(cleaned the rust off and re did the stock, ish.)and in taking the bolt apart one of the rusty springs inside the cocking knob broke. I don't know where I can get one. I may just have to buy a whole new bolt because the guns not even mine and I want it to be complete. I cleaned the gun up for a friend.

    That's the right tool for the job you describe. Absolutely. There was a time when I would've preferred the 870 for this purpose but not anymore. I myself am thinking of getting a mossburg.

    • @logcabinlooms
      @logcabinlooms  7 лет назад +2

      +youngn9na92 yes, I have had it for years, but it's a long barrel, full choke. Its a great shotgun for hunting, but I wanted a short barreled gun to shoot things like slugs. It's been in a few videos a while back, one that comes to mind is shooting a snowman, but I have also been in a shootout with one of them with my 1895 Nagant pistol.

    • @youngn9na92
      @youngn9na92 7 лет назад +1

      logcabinlooms Oh, that sounds interesting. I will have to look for it. I haven't ever seen an 1897 in anything but 2 and 3/4 in. though, and I don't believe that was your objective here. The maverick looks like a sound option. May have a little trouble putting pin tar on it though. Just kidding of course, I wonder if you'll get a new stock? I've seen used ones for reasonable prices in the past.

    • @youngn9na92
      @youngn9na92 7 лет назад

      logcabinlooms In my first comment I meant to say "trench" style 1897, I think those have 20" barrels normally. I believe you touched on looking at a cut down one though.
