Gerber Dual Force - First Look And Impressions

- Today we are looking at the latest release from Gerber, the Gerber Dual Force. A couple of the things that stand out with the Dual Force are the slip joint pliers, a first in a multi tool, and Gerber's inline outside accessible driver. Those features, combined with other tools featured in this model make it a worthy contender for a tradesman's multi tool.
Of all multitool reviewers, you are the only one who is realistic and any of the tools functionality and real life practicality. You are the only one I actually trust.
Honestly, I don’t think the lower quality materials/build is a recent thing for Gerber. They’re innovative, and have been for a long time. But they’ve always been a step behind in quality.
Ten steps on this one. Made in china
@@dualsportoutdoors yikes
@@dualsportoutdoors China doesn't automatically mean lower quality. It all depends on the quality control. You can just as easily produce junk in the USA or in any other country. Companies willfully choose to create lower quality products overseas by cheaping out on materials, workmanship and above all proper quality control.
@@meeder78 I have a Kizer Sheepdog knife that's made in China. S35V steel, carbon fiber scales and ball bearing pivot.
$200 and super high quality. It would easily be a good $80-$150 if it was made in the States.
Like you said. It all depends on the reason the manufacturer is using China for.
Lost my Leatherman a few weeks ago 😬. Always found the need for a needle nose limited, having to grab slip lock for most jobs. This looks like all the tools are perfect choices for common tasks I do. I'm sold! Thanks for the overview!
I've had my Leatherman for 25 years, it's seen Gerber knives come and go. Leatherman is my everyday carry, always has been
That's cool and all but this is a Gerber tool video
If it's not too late:
Before marring up the fasteners I'd recommend just throwing your lubricant of choice into the pivots and giving each tool some dedicated opening/closing time. This isn't ideal, but not that uncommon on new tools and can work wonders without messing with the pivots themselves.
Man! Can't wait to see what you think. Edit: yep, we need to do a 1 year review and rope in as many ppl as possible to get a lot of data points. The pliers will MAKE OR BREAK the Dual Force
Used it seriously yeterday for the first time putting together a diesel heater. Been using multi tools for decades and I tell you, this is the first time I felt like I had a "real" tool in my hands.
Best pliers I have ever had in a multi tool is still the Leatherman Crunch.
Agreed. Been carrying mine for YEARS! Won't farm without it.
Your reviews are top knotch. For independent review purposes my hope is that you'll remain independent, but I can't see why any good company wouldn't find a way to pull you in. Your reviews and tool understanding is something a company could use on the initial design end. I couldn't imagine the innovation that could come out for multitools if you were able to have input on that end. Great work.
I’ve been looking forward to this tool for a long time. Thanks for posting!
I don't own this tool so I can only assume, but my one perceived issue is those cutters on the back mean you have to aim a little better.
That being said I absolutely love the size of these monsters. As a guy in the pipe trades I can honestly attest: your multi-tool pliers are never as big as you need them to be.. and your truck full of actual tools is always parked a little further away than you think it is!
I watched another youtubers review of this tool before you posted yours and as soon as I saw the scraper/chisel I knew you would like it. I've never been a fan of slip joint pliers or layered steel for any type of pliers. I didn't like when craftsman made them. I do like the outside tools and the bit storage.
My concern with that chisel tip on the file is that I tend to support the back of the file with my index finger. If that thing comes up short and your finger goes over the end.. oh boy, grab the electrical tape and a corner of paper towel.
@@dgunn4408 good point. I do the same thing on small files like this
With you on the apprehension on the pliers design. Just not sure about that outer layer and the non sharp teeth. Also, can't imagine those plastic bit holders will hold up. Can see them breaking with a drop from 4-5 ft onto concrete. Great vid, look forward to a testing review.
For years I carried my diamalloy handyboy "multi tool" but it's come time to retire them. I'm looking forward to getting a pair of these
Looking forward to seeing the outcome of your testing.
Awesome evaluation of the dual force multitool. Ben you are the best. I rely on your evaluations and opinions for any purchases. Please start evaluating power tools. Breese IL
I just picked mine up today, I like the plier head a lot. The outside tools is what I use mostly. Love the 3” straight blade. My only complaint is when closed the handles have slight movement. Otherwise I’ll be carrying this along with my leatherman P4.
I also have the gerber centre drive, tools inside were to small to use effectively, awl could’ve been a bit longer, and instead of bottle opener a can opener be better.
Well in addition mine had the worst file ever.
Seems like a nice replacement for my Leatherman Crunch🤷♂️ Doesn't lock but pliers look a lot more useable than the needle nose that everybody else seems to use which is the primary reason I've carried a crunch for so many years.
Been waiting for your review on this one, and look forward to the torture tests you can think up.
Great ideas with the multy tools
Nice initial review. Looking forward to the follow up. I’m interested. 🙏🏻
Four weeks later, I’m looking forward to what you think about this Gerber after testing.
I just received this tool yesterday and I really like what I see and feel. Great review Ben . Look forward to hear your long term thoughts.
Where did yoy get it from? Ive been keeping my eye out for the US release, canada has had axcess to it for the last year or so
I ordered directly from Gerber .
Ben, what line of work do you and your crew do? Apparently, you fabricate stuff on sight for something? I am really enjoying your rope tutorials.
Thanks for sharing.
I am a millwright specializing in feed mill construction and industrial blast rooms.
@@txtoolcrib That sounds like fun work. I read your "About". I wish I had family members that had that range of stills and knowledge they gave you. I'm a retired welder/fabricator. I settled into medium to light fabrications specializing in TIG and, in 2001, CNC plasma cutting. I was fortunate having one of the best teachers in the state. Have fun.
I used the knipex cobra xs pliers to grab on the wired screw to loosen it a bit. The teeth on the cobra bite well in the grooves on that screws!
Cheers from Germany!
Glad you like a idea I sent to both Gerber, leather man and Sog
Lap the pivots
why cant gerber make some replacement 154cm cutters to swap out those carbide ones that I am to scared to use.
Excellent idea on a "special" branch or "special" type of tool, for the absolute top quality pieces. Some people might say over the top qualities, NOT ME! Lol
From what I've heard the plier head is made out of forged plates, so it will be interesting to see how it compares to the cast plier heads you get on most multi tools.
Great looking nut cracker. Luv Leatherman but my first tool was an Gerber tool, might get me one.
Hahaha... Nutcracker! Now I can't unsee it 😄
Yes it definitely needs standard forged plier head but awesome innovation. Waiting for a version with vise grips.
Leatherman Crunch is the only one we’ll probably ever see
I'm always trying different multi tools. One thing I hate about Leatherman is, I have had the tools so tight that I needed a small screwdriver just to open them. They also have the security lock down screw. When I adjust the tightness to the point it opens easy, then the Knife does not close smooth, it hits the handle I'm on the Gerber center drive now. I may try the Dual Force.
Aren't slip joint pliers kind of a out dated tool when you have channel locks and full range adjustable pliers ?
What about needle nose?
I use the leatherman surge with Gerber mp600 blunt nose. Works for me
Im getting one of these, i love my surge, but the weak plier on it and the lack of a decent phillips screwdriver annoys me, i dont need 3x flat blades ever.
Try your can opener on an SAK as spanner wrench for the pivot screws
Good idea
@@txtoolcrib use to carry a 600 and it worked well, I think it is the tallest screw head that is turnable
Enjoyed this 😃
Agreed 100%. Gerber makes a handful of super nice USA made products still. There’s no reason why this tool shouldn’t have S30V blade steel and a made in USA stamp. I would have no problem paying $150 if it was.
Really dig this one but won’t buy it solely cause it’s made in China.
I’m with you. I was super hyped until I heard it was made in china. Gerber’s chinese line is junk and I don’t trust any chinese factories anymore after seeing so many posts where guys have had knives tested and found that they weren’t made from the materials the company that designed them wanted and aren’t heat treated to the company’s specs. Not to mention all the clone companies over there. Last but not least, china is a communist country. I’m getting rid of all the chinesium from my collection. I think I may have one or two more videos with chinese made things dropping in the next 4 months and then my channel will not have anything chinese again for the foreseeable future
Gerber is owned by fiskars now a Finland company that makes most of there tools currently are made in china
are there replacement cutters for the centre drive? I can't believe no one has made a steel set of replacement cutters yet.
This is the first video I have been able to watch at 1.75 speed. Good info though.
Great review, I love this but I can not find it anywhere.
I've always wondered what happens when you dull the saw? Can you send it in to get a replacement or are you just stuck with a dull saw blade?
Those thumb holes are needlessly tall. Makes the saw and knife blades weaker against breakage, for no good reason. I realize the argument of "just avoid abusing it and you'll be fine." Nonetheless, toughness is valuable.
Someone needs to learn how to properly use saws and knives before they complain about tools being "weaker against breakage" always treat your tools with respect and don't push boundaries and if you do expect them to break. Then again can't fix stupid and people claiming tools need to be "tough" you can only make a tool so tough before an idiot goes monkey brain and breaks it then complains about the design being "Weak".
@@Horde334 Yeah that's what 'someone' would think until 'someone' has a tool with a needlessly weak spot break under middling force even when it shouldn't have. 'Someone' needs more experience fixing equipment in the field at night with a flashlight in 'someone's' mouth. Then again, can't fix 'someone's' stupid, though.
Commenting here as a question, not necessarily a video idea. But could you put the surge T-shank adapter in place of the file on the leatherman curl? Also could you put in a pair of + pliers, the kind with the replaceable cutters?
Im now just debating with myself whether if I should carry the knipex cobras alongside with the dual force...
Really love your reviews! Gonna get me a Victorinox Farmer X cuz of your review.
I got the dual force I added a nite ize hip clip on it for pocket carry
The advantage of the layered pliers is two pivot points instead of one. This will give more stability and strength with open tolerance in manufacturing. It's a choice someone had to make to hit the target cost.
I think this is better but I’m still not ready to run out and buy a Gerber multi tool. I don’t like the layered “robo cop” looking pliers but the real proof is when you put them to the test and see how they hold up.
As soon as I saw that plier head design, I thought, 'That's not going to stand up to heavy use.' How's it going? I'd rather have some Knipex Cobras and a Swiss Army knife, and save some money.
I’m gonna watch this, even though I wanted to wait to see your review until mine comes in tomorrow. lol
My one tweak would be that I’d prefer Surge style scissors in the slot where the saw is. I seldom have need for a saw
I honestly rarely use a multi tool saw.
@@txtoolcrib after messing with my Dual Force today after it was delivered, I have to say, I think I like it!
Now that I’ve experienced the tool, I definitely wish they had gone with big scissors instead of the saw.
I greatly appreciate that the plier arms are more narrow. Definitely easier to grab for me than a Surge.
My only other nitpick is the grind on the blade has a sorta curve towards the base of the sharpened portion.
Diamond side instead of single cut side on the file would’ve also been neato.
Still seems to be a good tool, however!
How sharp are the edges on the tool? I had to stop carrying my center drive because it was ripping up my pockets.
Thanks for the review. And where did you get the Texas flag mat? Please and thank you.
I took a few time before to write. Already 3 weeks with thr DF a work pretty good. Pair with the Surge and sometimes with the Swisstool.
The blade is enough good for EDC, the chiesel is just great!!! The file is aggressive enough and pair nice with Surge which use a smaller and less aggressive. I don't use the saw a lot but is nice to have one there and keep the file in the Surge.
I been carrying the ICON mini ratchet with the bits at my backpack. Having a full kit of bits there and the Dual Force make a very nice combination. The arm is long but when tight strong have movement, when you do a lot of force.
The pliers fit very good in my hands. I had done 1-1/4 nuts rotate. Is a very nice Multitools to have in you small edc pouch or truck. It pair nice the Surge or any MT with scissors.
IMO is one of his kind and deserve a good spot. Just bought the leather sheath and the bits to complement and having stuck in my truck console. Looking to add a metal clip and make it easy carry.
The plies look a bit like Russian Ratnik 6e6 multi tool.
On what planet?
Good video!
Half joking here: You might have received a Canadian version: anything you can wrist flick will not cross the border…so a lot of knife manufacturer tighten the crap out of those pivot to get them across
На мій погляд, напильник досить тонкий, и до того має послаблення в основі, там виріз для відкриття однією рукою. І стамеска на кінчику такого напильника це не досить надійно...
Інше покаже лише практика
Дякую за відео👍
Why a massive thumb hole on the file? A file is naturally grippy by its design it doesn't need a thumb hole to open it, more file, less hole.
You are incorrect regarding slip joint. Gerber, Craftsman and Buck have all had them.
They put that locking driver setup on an armbar and I am use that many people will change their tune on it. The lack of a locking driving turned me away more than anything else on the tool.
I’ve yet to see any laminated tools that have any significant hardness to hold an edge on the teeth I remember craftsman tools dabbled with laminated designs for both water pump style and also locking pliers thought they were a great gimmick but that’s all they really were was a gimmick not very sharp. Now they are just dust collectors
I was super disappointed with how dull the file is and the cutters are not great. The rest of the tool is a win for me though.
This should have been leatherman garage #02
Least Gerber is going for innovation! Leatherman it’s been a while 🤷🏻♂️😞
I think the problem is that Leatherman knocked it out of the park with the Wave\Surge\Charge. Every innovation they've done since then has paled in comparison.
Like the Free series with magnets and bushings to appeal to the OCD fidget spinner demographic.
If any other company introduced that it would be seen as a win but since Leatherman's older stuff was already far better, it's seen as a misstep.
Heck, half of this tool's "innovation" is that it copies the Wave's idea of 4 big outside tools and smooth handles when opened. Now, it still needs to copy\innovate the pocket clip, and diamond file, but I have faith that a future Dual Force plus will innovate from Leatherman even harder.
I got the leatherman garage #2 the dark side. 🔥🔥. Going higher than mr crunch prices on eBay
Please send me one !! They don't sell it here. 😅😉
Where did you buy it from ?
Gerber Gear
@@txtoolcrib worth buying?
I’m getting my Leatherman pst heritage edition probably tomorrow
Better without sound.
This thing would be infinitely better if it was USA made. I was going to buy one until I found out it was made in china. I was super excited too because finally Gerber had a Center-Drive style driver and a saw
I don't know. I own this tool as well as a bunch of Gerber's USA made multitools : Center Drive; Center Drive plus; 400; 600 standard; 600 buntnose; 600 bladeless, etc.
This has noticeably higher build quality than all my USA made Gerber tools. Though, the blade and driver seem similar to the Center Drive, unlike Ben's issue, mine has a great fit on the Dual Force and instead it's my Center Drive(s) that are too tight.
In my experience, Gerber's USA made knives are far better than their Chinese stuff, in the case of this specific tool however, it wins. It's literally the best multi tool Gerber has ever made IMO.
It's not as good yet but it's as close as Gerber has ever gotten to competing with Leatherman's good stuff like the Surge.
@@Claudius_Nero let us know how it is a couple months or so from now
Slip-joint pliers a “multi-tool first”? Hardly- Craftsman made one decades ago with a slip-joint set up and multi-bit screwdriver. It was made pretty well, too- I had mine for years until some degenerate broke into my car and glommed it out of my glove box.
Yes, I think it was based on the old Schrade tool with some tweaks.
If is flimsy is not reliable, if is not reliable is not worth it to purchase no matter how cheap it is.
Just go with a Wave
Another Swing And A Miss For GERBER!!! Year After Year After Year In Their Multi-Tool Lineup.
Ruined it with laminated plier head, I'm sure if laminated was stronger, knipex would have made cobras that way.
TOO MUCH HYPE!

Gerber is just silly
