My daughter and I love your videos. She's 5. We just saw an Assassin Bug on a door outside. She was fascinated and wanted to learn more and we found this. Wonderful. Thanks.
I found them, here in Florida, on my front patio. We had several wasps nests that were forming and becoming aggressive. I was about to get rid of them when the assassin bug showed up and ate the wasps and their larvae. I first noticed them eating caterpillars then was surprised to see them attack the wasps.
I accidentally squeezed one this morning, it definitely has a stinging bite! Where it bit, gave me a blood blister & the pain was gone after about 4 hours. I have hundreds around my house. It seems like no matter where I go when I water each morning, there's almost a bug on every one of my plants! I'm sure glad to see them.
Good news guys! This is a wheel bug (who is in the assasin bug family) but is not a blood sucker. It is not the the kissing aka assasin bug that carries the parasites that cause chagas disease. So don't freak, although it does have a really painful bite!
I've been stung by one. It hurt like HELL!!! I was in pain for over four hours. It feels like pliers are squeezing the area where you are stung. It's a lot stronger than a bee or wasp sting. I've been stung by over twelve hornets at one time. That was nothing compared to being stung by an assassin bug once. It is extremely painful.
Just found some in my house along with wolf spiders and a scorpion or 3. Do they actually have a stinger? I thought they just stab you with the syringe like appendage on it's mouth.
@Kenneth Wood Years ago when I was kid living up in Northern California, we lived out in the country in a mobile home with a full deck attached and I was sitting on the deck in the dark and reached between my legs to pick up what I thought was a black cricket. I immediately started screaming from the pain of getting bit on the end of my index finger by a very large assassin bug, about the same size as a full grown black cricket, and about the same shape except black/red. I grabbed the assassin bug with my forefinger on it's mouth and my thumb on it's head like I would when picking up the black crickets I always played with as a kid facing that way. The pain was the worst I ever experienced and lasted very intensely for around 3 hours and still hurt bad for several more. My parents came running outside asking me what was wrong and I remember I couldn't tell them what happened because of the pain I was in. I'll never forget that.
I have two types of smaller Assassin Bugs around my place, black ones, and the somewhat smaller red and black ones. Find them all over, the black ones inside, and the red/black ones outside the garage, more some years than others. No bites or other problems from them yet, other than the over population of the red-black ones some years.
I was bitten on the finger by one of these many years ago. The pain was awful, and I screamed so loud, I'm sure it would have been heard from blocks away. I'd rather give birth with no pain meds then to go through that kind of pain again. And I still have the scar.
I actually have one as a pet. They are very docile when you hold them. I actually can go outside and hold my hand up to one and they climb on. Their little feet are cute
@@gardenmagik so she died yesterday but she left me her eggs. I miss her. I love my pets whatever they may be I can't help it. They are attached to the walls of her enclosure. I remember finding one of these a few weeks ago at my high school lunch table. I had an epic closed mouth shriek when I found it on my hand when it was on a bench and I was on a small wall it was suddenly gone.
Great video. What I like the most was your accent. Love it! What I didn't love is the reason I found your youtube page. I got bit by one of these rascals about two weeks ago, and it hurt! I was googling these critters and found your video. Well done you southern cutie pie!
Every time I grow peppers, I normally spot at least 5 of them guardians right before the first harvest. Noticed them more this year than last year…bad part is, they wanted to stay with my peppers and my tomatoes ended up getting eaten by pests lol
I've lived in Illinois most of my life and never encountered one of these before until just last week when I was sitting down in the basement and all of a sudden felt something land on the back of my neck and instantly got bit by the thing. I would say it feels a bit worse than a bee sting, but not as bad as a wasp sting, however a week later and the back of my neck is still sore if i rub or touch the area it bit me. Makes sense that they're related to sink bugs because after it bit me and I rage smashed it, I had to temporarily evacuate the basement because of the horrible smell which I would describe as indescribable.
Assassin bugs are only aggressive if feeding or handled carelessly. I wouldn't reccomend picking them up all the time, but if you do have to handle one, handle with care and they are slow moving and docile. Only time I've ever been bitten by one was while I was asleep.
i've been trying to attract some of these. i have no clue why but cabbage whites caterpillers, cucumber beetles and now squash beetles come back to my container garden year after year. ;.; i found a tiny bug that kinda looks like that but its too small to tell. I have however found plenty of "beaked" bugs, even the squash beetles that got my squash this year have beaks. But none of them really match the pictures i've seen.
careful that might have been a kissing bug. They're related to assassin bugs, suck blood and carry disease. Unless of course you seemed like a predator and it got you in the fingers.
If you do get bitten, check with your doctor for Chagas infection. Disease that attacks the heart and if unchecked can cause major damage to some vital organs and heart failure. No joke
I've seen quite a few of them around my apt the past couple weeks....thought they were really cool looking!! Thanks for warning me about them biting because I didn't know and tried to handle it lol.
I've had one sitting on my porch for 5 days now I find him in different spots every time I see him, but always on my porch. ..
