Honestly there's nothing to say that he wasn't a samurai. We honestly have no idea what kind of life Yasuke led under Nobunaga. The historical record mentions him twice and depictions of him have as a white skin Japanese man. But it's just weird that they chose the one singular black man in Japanese history and make that guy one of the protagonists. The guy that was one of the biggest oddities in Japan at the time.

Sadly no matter how many criticizing posts we Japanese audiences throw at Ubisoft Japan on X, they remain completely silent. Probably ignoring us intentionally because they are still trying to reach ignorant audiences who does not know about criticism against their game. I think we can see the pattern. The issue they had with Ghost was that it was too japanese.

The sad thing is, Yasuke could have easily worked as side character tormented by the survivor's guilt because he was unable to save Nobunaga, the man he viewed as his benefactor. Give him a kanabo, a weapon that matches the description of Yasuke's strength, and boom, the side quest writes itself. As a main character Yasuke becomes way too detachable from reality as we have to believe his proficiency in fighting with a katana, speaking Japanese and most likely understanding old Man'yogana writing system, all learned in one year he's been in the country. I doubt there was Duolingo to help put.
The Netflix show did this so much better. And a whole lot more respectful to both the cultures involved and the time period, despite having robots and death lasers.
I agree; there was enormous potential there to tell a memorable story, to humanize this historical person but instead they sensationalized him. What a waste...

They did hired Japanese Consultant for advice, but they hired a Japanese that wasnt qualified for the job when she doesnt study on culture and history. If I give her a generous judgement is that she did have some studies on culture and literature, but Japan's culture and history is so VAST that any expert on it need huge amount of hours and studies to know almost everything. However the consultant Sachi Schmidt-Hori main focus on her studies is gender and sexuality, which should speak for herself that she isnt qualified.

sadly these are probably the best looking open world games to play at their release. The markets actually pretty dry on decent open world "RPGS" . I don't see these failing but I could be wrong. I will play them just to check them out but I will not buy them lol ;)

I was very uncomfortable watching the Assassin's Creed Shadows PV.
I'm Japanese, so I didn't understand it before, but I feel like I understand a little bit about racism after this incident.
I now understand how Westerners see Japan.
I now understand what Hiroyuki Sanada meant when he filmed the Shogun, saying that he wanted to eliminate the misconceptions Westerners have about Japan.
