Right now there’s a $200 difference in price, I like D Star but the lack of APRS (52) is an issue for a $600+ radio. No doubt the audio is better and the BT functions are a plus. The 52 is more of a at home radio for me (no D Star repeaters locally) for monitoring downstairs away from my base VHF/UHF and use on my ZUMspot 3.5 hotspot. I own both and they have a niché. The 5DR seems like a more rugged radio. I am looking forward to what Kenwood will have at Dayton (D74 replacement). But no telling how expensive it may be. Id like to see a somewhat stripped down version without the wide band coverage while keeping APRS, D Star plus adding full duplex, a fully accessible TNC and better BT.
@@HamTechRadioScannerDrones merry Christmas to you too. My antennas have arrived and 🎅 is bringing my HF rig, unless I get on the naughty list between now and then 😜
The ID-52A is being released here in the US in December according to dealers here. It's being listed at $649.95 and can be pre-ordered. Yep, I'm gonna buy one.
I have Both, Because they are High Quality Japanese Radios, I love the Way that These Two Companies have Very High Quality Standards! I also have a Alinco DJ-MD5 DMR HT to!
I use a microSD-SD adapter with my FT3D. I'm a photographer, so I have a couple of card readers already at hand. It saves on the spendy Yaesu programming cable. 73 KN6NPZ
Yep. Card to store 240x160 pictures was an awesome idea :) Don't remember if i used it once. Why not to embed 512M storage, that not increase much a price. Maybe even cheaper then to install a connector and teach firmware to negotiate with different cards.
I use all the mode and Dstar is very busy and has amazing equipment dmr is also busy the equipment is good value but alot to learn fusion radios are good and simple to use -cheers 73
Did you forgot to say FT-5DR doesn't work. You went for a weekend and forgot to bring that 1990 cord charger for it and no, they are not selling it on a fuel station :) You have USB for your phone and camera. But your FT5DR is just a brick :) On another side ID-52 not a wide band receiver. Not even 220 on receive side. I think good to wait Yaesu with USB-C one day :) Yaesu has a very pleasant screen. Easy to read specially on the dash of the car. Once it get stolen i feel blind to see other tiny HT screens.
I’m about to buy my first HT, which is also my first ham radio period. Is this radio too advanced for a newcomer? I want quality, and I’m willing to pay for it. My concern is that I order one of these and discover that I’m in way over my head in terms of complexity of operation.
Hi its a really good time to buy the ft5 as it's 50 pound cash back , yes it's advanced but u won't need to buy any other Hand held - I will help u learn the 52 is expensive and a bit big .
Great review, thanks for that. I've got the FT2D and was wondering whether to get the FT5D or give Icom I D-52 a try. That's a great unbiased review. Thanks again. Andy- M0BAH.
We think we should buy the Yaesu FT5D and wait for the new/next Kenwood Tribander D-Star HT with RX SSB. The icom ID-52 is outdated even before they release it. We can't believe after the IC-705, a very fun and good radio, icom built the ID-52. It's not ok. It's not worth having. We're sorry we won't buy this on5.
I agree compared to the 705 its outdated the band scope quality is poor but overall it's a hit with Hams and will be a best seller , what I want to see is a Yaesu qrp radio like the Icom 705 - cheers
You started to show a scan on the FT5 but did not complete that. It completely masks both VFO and Memory scans which is complete BS because one cannot stop a scan predictably in a band or in a memory list. It is an infuriating cheesy design that Yaesu does not inform a prospective buyer about. This renders the FT5 as a neutered and inferior product, forcing a user to navigate to specific frequencies or memories by cranking the knob unlike ANY amateur radio in history. AVOID the FT5. It COULD have been the perfect HT, but this infantile engineering oversight renders it as trash.
@@HamTechRadioScannerDrones Just look what you can accomplish with ID-52 and its integration with a phone or a tablet via BT link. FT5D BT supports audio output only. Wouldn't be handy to type APRS message on your phone and send it to FT5D via BT for delivery? There is a Chinese HT which can do just that. People control all sorts of devices from their phones. Why Yaesu does not get it?
@@malanalan1 My 4100 can pair with my phone, got the BT module but I never use it after I got it setup. Seems cool, but for me not worth being out and about and not only messing with your HT but your phone or tablet at the same time. I like my icoms but dstar is not as popular as other modes.
hi great video as usual. it never ceases to amaze me that Yaesu make quite cheap cases for their radios considering how much they cost
Agree Yaesu could do better on some modesls.

I have to say, I am very impressed with my FT5D after using a borrowed Baofeng.

I also have both but the Yaesu's wideband coverage is far more extensive than the Icom because it covers the HF band for AM broadcast.

Bluetooth on the Yeasu connects to nothing.

Nothing against ICOM, but I would go with DMR and FUSION. They have a much wider base and growth potential.

i like the icom id52a better because that's what i bought
Both very good the FT5 has C4FM fusion mode and costs less I have both .
What did you mean "they will last for 3 years anyway"?
ICOM gave 3 year warranty once I think.
What about battery life?
Hi function radios always need a spare battery but u get about 8 hours
Analoog klinkt beter... duidelijker!
ok
That repeater database feature is an idea that Yaesu needs to steal.
They prefer up to use WIRES X PDN Mode .
no ssb?
what a bummer.
D74 or maybe the new D75 :)
SSB receive in the FT3D or FT5D would have been sweet. Don't understand why it is left off the HT's

Hi Dale yes yaesu should not have had the scan in this way otherwise it's an excelent radio that has hundreds of good functions.and is well priced .
I have the FT3D which scans VFO and MEM properly. Keeping this radio. Was going to upgrade to the 5 but not now.
Has this been fixed?
money well spent?
Yes agree
they are turning in to cellphones
NO
D star is much better fusion does not have as many repeaters
Depends where u are.
No mention of ID-52 superior Bluetooth functionality. Dude, your review is very weak in substance. FT5D is old technology and old concept
Why is 52 bluetooth superior please give details, why is FT5D old tech please give technical details thanks.
