This was their first "Evolution of...", in 2013. Their other evolutions are for single artists -- "Evolution of..." -- "...Beyoncé" (2014), "...Michael Jackson" (2016), "...Rihanna" (2018) and "...Arianna Grande" (2019). Their "90's Dance Medley" (2021) is a similar-style medley. And fans have done side-by-sides for all of these, with the PTX video and sound on one side and clips from the original artists on the other, which helps you appreciate the real complexity of these medleys.
They're 90s dance medley is awesome and they have a wonderful live version from their Hollywood bowl performance last year. But you really can't go wrong with any of their evolution / medley videos.
I’m 100% glad that the ‘60s and the ‘70s were my generation’s music. R&B, Folk, and Rock were my genres. My age group was lucky to have such a rich amount of music to form our coming-of-age. So much of today’s music that I love, has been influenced by the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s. Great reaction, John!
For non-Christmas music, the Hollywood Bowl concert in 2022 is a kind of 10-year retrospective. It was professionally recorded and they had a paid "live" stream. Some fans captured the stream and have posted on YT, especially Miles Reuben, but he has separate songs and I don't know if the whole concert is available in one video.
Oh, I highly recommend to listen to their other "Evolution of"! Also their cover of Gold has the strip back, sitting on a couch, live vocals, and just being awesome.
I was a teenager in the 1960's, a young adult in the 1970's, an older adult in the 1980's, and I believe I had the privilege of growing up with the best music!

Was not expecting history to go as far back as it did. Monk chants? They really know their musical history. They can also sing any song, any style and any genre. They are a special group. Their Evolutions are one take minimal editing. They do a few takes and publish the best one. They do some of them live.
As with a few others who've commented, I grew up in the 60's and 70's, and in San Francisco, which was quite the place to be. I was lucky enough as a young teen to be at the very last Beatles concert, which took place in my hometown. My father took me for my 16th birthday to see Simon & Garfunkel in a totally acoustic concert right when they were starting to hit big. Those were just 2 of the shows. Then I married a man who was in the music business (as crew and management) and ended up at some pretty darn iconic concerts over the years. As someone said, the 60's were a time when the old music concepts were pushed aside in favor of a whole new world of sound. My innovative, pioneering generation, in more than just music.
I recommend PTX Pop Spring 2016, an annual Japanese MTV concert series, so audio and video are top notch. PTX presents three original songs plus their evolution of Michael Jackson.
I grew up in 70's. Graduated in 1976. I saw Queen play live in Philadelphia. Saw Charley Daniel's Band do Devil Went Down To Georgia, Willy Nelson & MANY more ! I loved Surviver, REO Speedwagon. Love singers who are passionate, and just good music. I am a PTX Pentaholic. My husband passed 3 years ago in 2020 and I started listening to them on Utube at 3 in the morning. They saved me! Born 68, grew up with 60s and 70s music and spend my teenage years with the 80s....ALL of the 80s. Was hanging out with a local hard rock band but listened to everything under the sun. The music was so diverse. In the charts there was Metal beside New Wave and Pop. In Germany we've had something that's been called "The new German wave" (Nena even had success in the states) From age 16 to 20 I had a real music lover as a boyfriend and we've seen sooo many great bands....From AC/DC to Metallica, from Berlin to Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Jeff Healy, Huey Lewis and the News, Mötley Crüe and Gary Moore, Queen and U2, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, Prince and Marillion, Foreigner...I've seen them all. And I call myself very lucky because of it. Of course it sucks to get older, but man...I wouldn't trade those times for youth.
That one from the ‘30s was Hi-De-Ho from Cab Calloway, a legendary entertainer from the early jazz era. Look him up, he’s a ground-breaking artist with an amazing stage presence. As for my fave musical era, it’s the one I had - late ‘60s, complete 1970s and the early ‘80s. Although I have to say, I like disco way more now than I did then! Peace …
I was born in 1971, and I would not change it for anything, as far as music goes. Right as I was getting old enough to appreciate music, the 80s were starting, and all the hits from the 70s were still being played. Then through the first part of the 90s, I stayed in dance bars. Then got married and had children, and kind of lost touch with music, most of that had to do with developing migraines in my late teens, and any prolonged sound of any volume would set off a migraine. But I can listen to PTX with no problem.
Maybe a new rabbit hole for you John, react to some of the music artists from the 60's and 70's. Mowtown, Simon and Garfunkle, Stevie Wonder, Chicago, Jethro Tull, The Who, The Doors, The Moody Blues, Blondie, Heart, B52's ...
Add me to the chorus who have been to one of their concerts recently. Saw them in 2012, and recently in Charlotte, and they were just what I expected. Their shows have evolved enormously, but I think I preferred the simplicity of the earlier concert. Also, their sound system was great.
I lived the dream, so I wouldn't wish to be born in a different era. I was fresh out of high school and working in a record store with a Ticketmaster computer in 1984-5. I got to listen to everything (we just opened albums and played them in the store if we were curious) and see EVERYBODY (usually with great seats because the tickets that weren't originally on sale for "promotional" reasons would get tossed back on sale at the last minute - and we were in the unique position to know it). Also, $25 was an expensive ticket back then, so it's BONKERS to me that people are paying thousands to see today's artists when we didn't have to pay that much to see LEGENDS.
Generation X checking in! I was a kid in the 70s and graduated in the late 80s. It was a great time to be a kid, I wouldn't trade it for any other era. I feel fortunate to have grown up when I did.
I was born in 1964, so the 80s were my era - when I was really discovering music and learning to love it! I discovered Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac around 1983 and instantly fell in love! I've only been to two real concerts in my life - Duran Duran and Cyndi Lauper! Both were in the 80s and I LOVED both of them! So I think I was born in the perfect era for me! I got to experience (via the radio) the best of the 60s and 70s as well as all of the greats from the 80s and 90s! Good GOD how I miss those days! But I love how I get to re-experience all of those greats through the eyes of young reactors - such as yourself - as they see them for the first time! It was such a great era to be alive! :)
They have several "Evolution of..." songs, but this is the only one for general music (sadly, because it'd be great to see an updated one), the rest are for specific artists: Michael Jackson, Beyonce, Ariane Grande and Rihanna. Then on top of that Superfruit (Mitch & Scott) have a couple too for Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus, and a few non-evolution medleys for different albums (Beyonce's self-titled album, Taylor Swift's 1989, Rihanna's Anti, and Empire the TV show), oh and the Frozen medley with special guest appearance from Kirstie...and previous wine. I can't remember if you have checked out any of Superfruit yet, but I highly recommend it, Hip Hop Goes Broadway 1 + 2 are especially fun, I guess they could be considered medleys but they don't have the same flowing arrangement as the others.
A great reaction thanks John. I love your enthusiasm for this group 😆 If you want to get some cross-over feature goodness, did you know they have an original song called 'A Little Space', which they invited Ateez members Yunho, San and Jongho to feature on? There's a music video and everything 😍. It was the feature we didn't know we needed!
I was in high school and college mid ‘60’s to early ‘70’s and music was great to dance to/ listen to and never stopped listening but honestly rap and current music 🎶 doesn’t do that much for me.But I always have music playing.❤
They have a whole set of Evolution videos...Michael Jackson, Beyonce, Lady Gaga(Superfruit), Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus ( superfruit ..I think) plus the did the 90's Dance Medley and Empire medley ( Superfruit) Frozen Medley (Superfruit + Kirstie). All of the Evolution videos are done in one take. They do about 4 takes, review them and decide which one to use. The Empire Medley was paid for by the record contract for the show. It was meant for advertizing I think, but the show got cancelled after the first season. The Frozen Medley is Scott, Mitch and Kirstie having a lot of fun doing what amounts to a half-drunk skit of the highlights of Frozen's songs. It's hilarious and you MUST watch the bloopers at the end.after the big Subscribe screen. Many Superfruit videos have bloopers after.
I was born in 1960. I've seen and heard some pretty wicked shit in that time yet, if I HAD to choose, I'd go for the 30s to 45s. The swing era. Big bands. Glen Miller, Benny Goodman, Billy Holiday. The fashion. The dancing. That said, I can't think of a single decade in my life that hasn't produced some truly outstanding talent and unbelievably creative music. I hope future generations get to stay on the ride.
❤ oh yeah! And yes just type in 'Evolution of' and there is a whole series but the rest I'm pretty sure are done by individual artist or group. And yes, they are all this good too! 😊❤❤
as a 70's kid.....I would have loved to have been in the clubs in the 70's. I was born in 1971 and I was right in time for the Disco age to fade into new wave of the 1980's. Disco kinda made a resurgence in the 90's when you think about it and that was when I was in the clubs. If I was a 20-something in the 1970's I definitely would be a groupie for ELO.....been one all time favorite band of all time since I first heard them in 1976 LOL
Genius at work in this compilation. My whole life and my parents and grandparents lives, just passed before my eyes while listening to this. Thanks Pentstonix for aging me so rapidly!!! 😨🎶
From the POV of what concert we'd have loved to get to, I was born a few years too late -- or realistically, maybe ten years too late, considering I'd have needed to 1) be an adult with a passport who could travel internationally, and 2) have the money to do it -- but if I ever had a chance to hop in a time machine and go anywhere, anytime, for a day, I'd have gone to Queen's Montreal concert in '81. It's all on video so I know what I missed, it's bleepin' awesome, with *the* best version of Somebody To Love that Freddie or anyone else ever did, and I'd kill to be in that audience.
I am actually surprised that you hadn't seen this one yet. It is incredible. I don't have the links. But, the Hollywood Bowl concert has a bunch of footage of it. Did you know ? 4 of the 5 members of the group worked the ticket box office from 11am to 1pm. They sold tickets, milled around the crowd and sang a few songs. The only reason Kirstie wasn't there. She just had her baby girl 3 months prior. How many groups do THAT? I was born in 1967. Graduated in 85. Definitely NOT wild. The concerts I went to were Billy Joel 2x Hall and Oats Little River Band Aerosmith-I didn't even know who they were when I bought the tickets. I just knew my soon to be husband liked them. Foreigner, John Cafferty and The Beaver Brown Band and Jeff Healy A jazz pianist Tom Grant Yes-but I was SUPER sick. ZZ Top was my last one. I was supposed to get to Pentatonix in September. But, sacrifices must be made sometimes for the greater GOOD. I am saving for the next tour. Sorry for the long comment. Oh, I absolutely LOVE your shirt.
I grew up in the 50s and 60s. But I never went to any concerts, largely because I wasn't near where they were being given and even if I had been we didn't have money for concerts. But the performer I most wish I'd heard live is John Lennon, after he left The Beatles. John was like a beacon to many in my generation, and "Imagine" was the song that moved us. And for those of us old enough to remember, the shock and grief we felt when John was murdered remain as strong today as they were nearly 43 years ago.
Like @Gwennedd below, I was born in the 50's and was a teenager during Motown, the British Invasion, and all the great groups! The group/person I would have loved to see live was Janis Joplin! She was so raw and talented! I wouldn't say the Beatles, because you would never, ever be able to hear their music...too many screamers! I went with my aunt (5 years older) to see "A Hard Days Night" and couldn't hear the movie! LOL It was a great time for music, fore sure!
I would LOVE to have been a young adult in the 80s and see a Michael Jackson show live. I'm so disappointed that I never got to see him live because I know it would've been life changing. speaking of MJ, you should add the Evolution of Michael Jackson by Pentatonix to your list, as well as all their other Evolution videos; they are all spectacular and will have you bouncing in your seat 🎼🎶🎼
Dude! You gotta check out Pentatonic 90’s Dance Medly.. I was married to you third wife and use to party every weekend (I’m was 50, she was 25) and I remember dancing to all of these! Look forward to seeing your reaction!
I would have loved to been a young adult in the 1940's. The big bands music was my parent's music and i just LOVE it. I was a teen in the 80's GREAT music!
Fun reaction! Loved how you have the appreciation for 60’s music..😊. As far as live concerts..I would suggest Pop Spring (older but Epic!). Or the Hollywood Bowl for more recent performance..
I didn't catch this the first time, but you said they covered 100 years, actually they covered almost 100 Centuries. 1200 to 2100. So yeah. they did that 🤔
Born in 1966... old GenX- generation of "latch-key-kids" and outside play equal to "Survivor" the 'reality show' 🙄 Why we're so adamant about clinging to "our music" so tight! Nothing today compares.
Love this one - definitely in my top three PTX songs! As for when I would choose to be born, based on music I'd probably choose the late 1950s so I'd be experiencing the 70s in real time as a teen but not be pressured into joining in with the drugs & free love aspect of the 60s. But I'm not unhappy with my position in music's pageant!
I'm waaaay to knowledgable and interested in history to want to be in any earlier decade haha. Us in the vintage fashion world have an expression. "Vintage fashion, not vintage values". So I'll gladly enjoy the music from the past from the safety of the present, thank you very much haha
If you want to see the beginnings - check out the Sing Off episodes - that enabled them to get started. There are maybe 13 of them or so - very entertaining - from 2011. You can see them begin to gel as a group. They have done Evolution songs of Michael Jackson, Rihanna, Arianna Grande, Beyonce, and other mashups.
Evolution videos: Michael Jackson, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Ariana G. Also check out Gold, Popspring 2016 Live, La La Latch, SING, Can’t Hold Us, Imagine, Havana, Mad World, Cheerleader; 90s Dance Medley; etc. Honestly you can’t go wrong.
I love this compilation, and your reactions rock! I finally get to cross PTX Concert off my bucket list - flying to Austin in December to see them!!!!! Keep up the great videos!!!
I was a young adult in the 70’s. We had the best music back then! Pentatonix did a great job with this, but I wish they had included songs from Motown. 4 minutes wasn’t long enough. Great review!
The sad part is that we had more music previously to the Middle Ages, like Ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt and even Sumeria, but they didn't know how to write music and if they did, we can't interpret it. So many lost songs, specially since Greeks loved theatre. What we have now are popular songs that are probably a ''broken phone'' version of the original ones.
They have a whole series of “Evolution “ songs. Michael Jackson, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Ariana Grande - they do them all in one take and they are so good!
I hope they'll continue to stick around for a long time, but if they ever do break up, I hope they manage to do an Evolution of Pentatonix medley as their last song together. It would be a bittersweet but very appropriate way to end it, and I don't think anyone else could do a better job than they could with such a task.

I grew up in the 60’s and still listen to that music. Beatles, Rob Orbison, etc. Love it!
I was alive and lived it up in the 80s. I will be 55 in October. Saw so many concerts.
Born in ‘72 and can attest to the brilliance of being born into this little segment of GenX!
I love Pentatonix and watching this shows how much growth they have had over the years. They age like fine wine.
I was born in 1965, so I was a teen and young adult in the 80s and 90s - it was an awesome time musically!
You never go wrong with Pentatonix! They are phenomenal ❤
Generation X checking in! I was a kid in the 70s and graduated in the late 80s. It was a great time to be a kid, I wouldn't trade it for any other era. I feel fortunate to have grown up when I did.
I was born in '74. I grew up with some of the best music!
Born in 69 and I am very appreciative of my music!
i was born in 1958 ,so later 60s thru the 80s awesome time to be young
I am generation X. I high school when MJ was huge. Love that I grew up playing outside and none of all the electronics they have no a day.
I was a teenager in the 80"s and went to see Def Lepard live, it was amazing!! Love the 80"s and 90"s!
The 80s are the best decade ever!!!
A great reaction thanks John. I love your enthusiasm for this group 😆
If you want to get some cross-over feature goodness, did you know they have an original song called 'A Little Space', which they invited Ateez members Yunho, San and Jongho to feature on? There's a music video and everything 😍. It was the feature we didn't know we needed!
PTX 🔥🤘
I was in high school and college mid ‘60’s to early ‘70’s and music was great to dance to/ listen to and never stopped listening but honestly rap and current music 🎶 doesn’t do that much for me.But I always have music playing.❤
Saw them Thursday night in Washington State. The concert was incredible and so much fun.
I was in high school in the 80's. It was a great time, musically.
PTX are so talented... thanks John... looking forward to what comes next !!
Their new rules x are you that somebody mash-up is 🔥 🔥 🔥
I am actually surprised that you hadn't seen this one yet.
The concerts I went to were
Billy Joel 2x
Hall and Oats
Little River Band
Aerosmith-I didn't even know who they were when I bought the tickets. I just knew my soon to be husband liked them.
Foreigner, John Cafferty and The Beaver Brown Band and Jeff Healy
A jazz pianist Tom Grant
Yes-but I was SUPER sick.
I spent my teen years in the 80's and I wouldn't have it any other way. ❤️
Born in 1971. I wish I could have been around for early Three Dog Night, early Rush, Santana, Sha Na Na, Iron Maiden, Ac/Dc.
I was a teen in the 80’s and it was awesome. I would like to have experiences the 60’s as a teen. ❤❤
I turned 16 in 78.... Best time for music; late 70s and 80s! 😂 That being said, I feel like I should have I lived in the Victorian or Guilded age!
You should watch their "100 songs challenge " they're phenomenal.
I wouldn’t change being born in 1970. I just wish I would have made the time to go see more concerts.
Great reaction. I loved ;your facial reactions...and frankly, your facial amazement. Oh, and did you catch it was all done in one take?
I didn't catch this the first time, but you said they covered 100 years, actually they covered almost 100 Centuries. 1200 to 2100. So yeah. they did that 🤔
Born in 1966... old GenX- generation of "latch-key-kids" and outside play equal to "Survivor" the 'reality show' 🙄
Why we're so adamant about clinging to "our music" so tight!
The early 80s were pretty great musically, especially for rock. In my opinion.
If you had played the video to the end, you would have heard on how they picked the songs to sing as they explained it on the vid. 🙃
Dude you have to hear their rendition on Radioactive with Lindsey Sterling
Yes!!!!!!
Want to see their epic creativity? Check out “The Wizard of Ahhhhs”. It’s amazing!!!
I'm waaaay to knowledgable and interested in history to want to be in any earlier decade haha. Us in the vintage fashion world have an expression. "Vintage fashion, not vintage values". So I'll gladly enjoy the music from the past from the safety of the present, thank you very much haha
Musically, I should have been living in the 1930's-40's. Swing? Big band? Jazz? I would have been at the dance clubs every single night.
Not a hundred plus years - a thousand plus years.
Evolution videos: Michael Jackson, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Ariana G. Also check out Gold, Popspring 2016 Live, La La Latch, SING, Can’t Hold Us, Imagine, Havana, Mad World, Cheerleader; 90s Dance Medley; etc. Honestly you can’t go wrong.
They should to a part 2. That would be cool.
They have done evolutions of several artists including Michael Jackson, and Beyonce.
👍 Great and interesting as usual. 🖖❤
I love this compilation, and your reactions rock! I finally get to cross PTX Concert off my bucket list - flying to Austin in December to see them!!!!! Keep up the great videos!!!
I just saw them in Houston on the 7th, was gobsmacked the whole show, they are astonishing
I was a young adult in the 70’s. We had the best music back then! Pentatonix did a great job with this, but I wish they had included songs from Motown. 4 minutes wasn’t long enough. Great review!
I'd pick the 60's, no question. I was born late 50's, si i didn't appreciate the music then, but i do now.
80s was the best. Gen x
I recommend PTX Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)
How about their Live at the Hollywood Bowl
The sad part is that we had more music previously to the Middle Ages, like Ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt and even Sumeria, but they didn't know how to write music and if they did, we can't interpret it. So many lost songs, specially since Greeks loved theatre. What we have now are popular songs that are probably a ''broken phone'' version of the original ones.
have you reacted to there 'wizard of ahhhs ' that was the video i discovered them by and it's so good
Any generation that has me seeing Michael Jackson live just once please 😭 for maybe 80s early 90s
