I apologize I forgot to mention that I was a bit saddened by not seeing any penguin sliding let alone just the penguins showing up so that was a bummer, and then also I thought the actor who plays Sozin was GREAT for just the few minutes he's on screen! If they adapt two more seasons I would love to see him return for the scenes his character does have in the cartoon.

There were penguins in the background, while Sokka and Katara is still in there canoe. And I don't think that, that particular scene in the cartoon wud translate very well in the live action.
That wud have to be pretty large penguins in order for them to slide on it.

I really like how it is Gyatso's words that calm Aang down.
Because the original "We're your family now!" was always WAY too quick....Guys, you two know him for less than a day, those words do not feel earned just yet....
She does say it in the (SPOILER) though, which is a lot more of an appropriate point in the story - They've been through much, they have traveled the world for months...A true bond stood the test of time, and so her saying that he is their family does feel genuine and earned

And another important detail that I adore - I love the scene of Sokka "passing the torch" to the oldest boy in the village, so it won't stay unprotected and without a leader.
It always bugged me how Sokka tried so hard to protect his tribe, and yet left it...
In Live Action - he finds a worthy person to take his place as the men of the tribe

@@BytesizedL Better than the Movie, still hot garbage.
      Awkward inexperienced acting
      Poor character development
      Poor chemistry between actors/characters
      Poor ability to condense story
Replacing Roku's relationship with Aang and giving it to Kyoshi which was extremely important to the progression of the story was a huge mistake (maybe for DEI reasons they had too?)
Actors don't have an understanding of characters context and history leading to stale emotionless responses
It's as if the writers and directors received a summarized explanation of the show and made that the meat and potatoes
The play from Episode "The Ember Island Players" was more accurate than this adaptation
They did Katara wrong, she has nearly no personality and barely any lines.
They made Commander Zhao a emotionless manikin, which is unfortunate considering hes suppose to make your blood boil and he has the demeanor of a CVS Pharmacy cashier. Just occupying space waiting for the clock to tick to the end of their shift while they pray you use the self-checkout.
If you know nothing about the anime, it's probably not bad although there's contradictions throughout the episodes.
For instance, When Aang and the crew are approaching Omashu he states Omashu is known for it's delivery system through the city. Once they meet Teo, Son of the Mechanist; he states his father (presumed age 40s/50s) is responsible of the cities delivery system. In the show he was responsible for the refugees camp at the air temple and the technology developed there. If you're going to condense the story, perhaps not say that someone created a delivery system for the city that was developed over 50 years prior to his birth.
Confused why they made Shu female when it didn't add to the story other than making Oma and Shu a lesbian couple for the sake of DEI. If you're going to do that, at least highlight that in the story between the two villages to give value to the story. They could have made it meaningful and state that a same sex union was frown upon in the villages. Make it reflect the Oma and Shu story changed the views on same sex unions and created a more acceptance when the two villages combined to created Omashu.
As episodes continue to find more contradictions in the writing and additions that don't progress the story telling. If I were to point out every writing mistake, it would be a novel in itself, the show doesn't have to hold scene for scene with the original but at least don't make as many mistakes and contradictions.

Give us a season two. All the actors' hearts are in the right place. I've mostly enjoyed the series so far. Sure there were some unnecessary changes, and some of the dialogue tends to run on, but this is a kid's show at the end of the day. As such I can understand why the writers felt the need to elaborate on or explain some things a bit more. This does lead to some awkward moments, but I am absolutely willing to look past them. I believe the casting for this adaptation is near perfect, and it is for this reason I remain hopeful we will get a season two.

You get the air bending tattoos cause you are one of the most skilled and talented air bender. You are basically a master, Aang just happened to get them at a very young age. So having Aang doing these stuff shouldn’t be a surprise. People hating on this cause they probably didn’t listen to the dialogue clearly. Gyatso, surprisingly was one of my favorites even though he barely got any screen time. The short time that I saw him I knew I was gunna like him. Appa personally looks great, that’s the big fur ball I love. The genocide was emotionally impactful cause it was an ambushed. Just seeing his friends and teachers getting burned to a crisp brought tears to my eyes. I’m kinda glad the fight didn’t get dragged on between Gyatso and Sozin, just to show how ruthless he is with the power of the comet on his side. Okay, when Gran Gran said those iconic lines my smile honestly dropped, because that’s just a missed opportunity. I was actually kinda wanted to see Aang to go into the avatar state when he fell into the water. I don’t want to say it but this reminded me of the movie, I was eager to see it here so it was kinda a let down. That’s just my opinion. In the southern air temple I’m glad it was Gyatso that calm him down it was a nice change. Overall this episode I’ll give it a 9/10 it’s actually one of my favorites out of 8.

I agree and actually I think that of the 3 seasons, 2 might be the one that can translate the best to live action. Bc over half of the episodes in book 2 take place in ba sing se and the writers would have an easier time incorporating the different stories. But for season 3 idk, there’s a lot of side adventures in the first half of the season, then you have the day of black sun, then Zuko needs to join the gang, then we need the Zuko field trips, and then the finale …idk book 3 might need to be split into two seasons fr 😅😭

I swear people have no concept of how wildly different the method of media used to tell the story: live action of eight 40+min episodes that's released as a whole VS a cartoon of 20 episodes of 20+ mins each released weekly. Two very different methods that require unique methods of execution. Also people forget how exposition heavy the cartoon actually was and how the cartoon hinted and implied a lot of heavy concepts for a kids show, but couldn't actually show or explain them in the detail required to flesh them out because it was precisely made for a kids network television company.
The show is streamlining the themes, events while explicitly delving into the ideas that the cartoon only elaborated on in vague and unexplicot ways. Again because it was made for 16 and younger kids, not 12 year old to older people which this show is rated for. TWO TOTALLY DIFFERENT MEDIUMS.
The actor who plays Iroh had the right idea when he said that it is not a copy, nor a remake, but a REMIX because he understood the medium of the story (form of media used) is inherent to its method of portrayal.
Again people wildly overestimate the cartoons handling of the more mature concepts - the fact they were even alluded to or just plainly part of the narrative was enough to warrant the fact it effectively delves into those things because ot was for kids explicitly and how it had to exposition dump in different ways because it was for children. The nostalgia simping and hindsight 20/20 musings of the show that everyone has had for 20+ years is blinding everyone to the extremely creative adaptation.
It is not as good as the cartoon, but it isn't wholly trash TV. If we, as geeks and nerds, can mostly agree that the Revenge of the Sith is a masterpiece despite its obvious flaws in dialogue and story telling, then we can at least try to appreciate the live action adaptation of our beloved ATLA. The cast and crew obviously have love for the original work. That being said, it could have been another Witcher fiasco. The showrunners had no love fpr the source material. The makers of NATLA simply do not have that same contempt for their own source material.

I appreciate you bringing this forward because I have had many fans come to me with reasonings behind why certain things are the way they are in the live action for them to like it but maybe someone like me was not as on board with them originally. The media formats definitely offer a different look on how to execute certain things.

Thanks for a good review. I've watched the first 4 episodes (and will probably finish the rest today/tonight)...but as requested I'll keep my comments focused on EP1. First...the production value looks very good. The CGI is done well (for the most part) and I really enjoyed the earth bending at the start. I feel they pretty much nailed the bending. Surprisingly I thought the character that was best "re-created" was Soka...he just seemed to give the aura of the carton version. I thought the other characters were fine...and did adequate jobs with their parts. Visually I pretty much like them all. Uncle Iroh was probably my next favorite...although I miss the gravelly voice of Maco but know they probably decided there would be problems with that. The cadence of Iron's lines were delivered well. Zuko was fine...I actually like what they did with the scar/wound. The changes to way things are introduced and play out was fine. The opening was very good. However (there's always a however)...I'll echo what my wife said as we watched. "A good show...but doesn't really "feel" like ATLA". They seem to have lost all of the humor and fun....and jumped start into the "dark". I know they are trying to make this more real/gritty...but I agree with her...other than a couple lines from Soka....there was NO fun. In short (after all those words) "a good well produce episode...with scenes added that improve the story flow....but...the spirit of ATLA Season 1 seemed missing to me.

It feels more like a coincidence that he ended up in the iceberg and in the original, it's a pretty big deal that he feels guilty and ashamed that he ran away so that's really surprising that they changed that.
But other than that, I feel like they mostly did the show justice so far. I don't mind the (younger) actors being a little bit awkward or that the show is more adult now and less goofy. I just hope they don't change the core messages too much.

My biggest nitpick was how many times they reiterated the Avatar cycle - we hear about it first from Sozin’s advisor, then in an homage to the original intro, again from Gyatso, and then a much weaker, near verbatim homage to the intro from Gran Gran. That was definitely the weakest part of the episode for me, but man did it start out strong with the Earthbender spy! I’m 5 episodes in and that whole chase sequence is still my favorite scene, right next to ***mild spoiler alert*** the chase/fight scene in Omashu

I think the disadvantage this show had in season 1 is that Book 1 of Avatar was very weirdly paced at times and sometimes things didn’t connect, and that doesn’t translate well to live action. Im sure Season 2 and Season 3 will be automatically better just because those seasons are better suited as a continuous story than Book 1 that has a lot of messing around and not a lot of progress.

    • @legendarymemer1095

counter point: “messing around” was providing bonding and screen time of the gaang actually getting to know each other, plus having adventures *together.* Not Aang going to Roku’s temple on his own, or playing Bumi’s game by himself. (Literal reason why he played along Bumi’s rules in the show is because Bumi threatened his friends)

@@legendarymemer1095 Yeah I know but when trying to adapt something to 8 episodes, adapting all those little episodes would have hurt the pacing of the show a bit and spread too much budget/time away from the bigger and more important moments, so I understand why a lot of changes in the story timeline had to be made, and why a lot of events had to be blended together (eg: Omashu also having the mechanists and the freedom fighters, which I actually liked since it added more importance and depth to Omashu) they do only got 8 episodes. But almost every episode in Book 2 and Book 3 are more focused on making progress towards the goal so it will be easier for the studio to adapt without changing too much for time constraints. One thing that this does tell me though, is Netflix seriously needs to rethink their 8 episode limit on original shows if they want to continue with One Piece and Avatar, its really making it harder on the writers and directors of these shows, 10 would be perfect.

It is far from perfect (what is perfect though?). I enjoyed it from start to finish, but not ignorant to the flaws.
Some changes I dislike (not hate) and question just why!? The opening, it is so iconic in the original that to not include it to me is questionable.
Changes they made were still made with great respect for the original compared to what a lot of adaptions do. Sure there were things I would have loved to have seen adapted but nothing I hated. We were done out of the "yipyip" scene and Appa Ignoring it, but I genuinely enjoyed "Sky Bison! Sky Bison!" scene just as much in this version. I think we should have seen Penguins BUT actual Penguin sledding would look weird that would not fully translate to live action quite as much as well as some people think. Plus, it would have been a filler scene more than anything.
It was not (thankfully) shot for shot recreation of the original but it was still very much The Legend of Aang as opposed to being a twisted and mutilated version with an Avatar TLA skin and name like with most other adaptations are.

Watched the whole show through. Episode 1 alongside episode 6 is my favourite by far. Hence why I don’t have much to say, or at least critique.
Mostly, it was a silly writing mistake to make Aang not actually avoid his responsibilities of becoming the Avatar and leaving for good and only leaving a letter to Gyatso (important regarding to his grief and guilt), but just go on a ride on Appa to clear his head, then decide to come back, and just accidentally get into a storm which basically nullified his fault and erased Aang’s main flaw during season 1 - avoiding responsibility and being a goof.
This fact also makes some conversations in the following episodes rather questionable, such as Bumi guilt tripping Aang? I feel like I watched a different cartoon from that producers of the live action did when learning about the source material..

Suki was creepy weird girl, she just met Sokka and they almost had s**, that all was too quick. Yue’s line being already a spirit and everything about that was unnecessary. And I hated everything about Bumi! Just EVERYTHING! Then, they didn’t have any trainings with Pakku, but I hope they will show it in the next season. Would be cool if they will do like the team was in The North Pole for a while, and the comet will arrive in 2-3 years, not few months. That would make sense for Gordon growing up because they filmed it more than 2 years ago and the next filming is not even planning yet. How is that gonna look? And, please, somebody, tell Aang’s and Katara’s actors to get some acting classes before they film the second season!

My only real critique is that some of the acting is a little stiff in places, but I also temper that with the fact that this is a first time gig for the kids, so I expect some flaws there; I do feel like their hearts are in the right place, and experience will get them on track, so I'm not overly worried.
Absolutely agree with the "Order 66" vibes during the genocide, that whole sequence was pretty harsh. One thing here that I actually appreciated over the original: the fact that all the Airbenders were arriving for the Comet Festival shows that Sozin's Comet is a well-known occurrence, while in the original, it's kind of treated like an anomaly, in a way. Sozin was well aware here that the Firebenders get a boost from the comet, so it's likely fairly common knowledge, at least within the Fire Nation, that that's normal, and just no one was expecting them to start a war with it this time around, so I liked that added detail.
Not gonna lie, that little exchange between Iroh and Aang on the ship was a plus for me. It kinda shows that Aang is good at reading people, because he's picking up that Iroh isn't quite what he seems in terms of being supportive of the war.
Altogether, I enjoyed it, Imma say 8.5/10, and again, I think that's down to the kids being inexperienced. If we get a Saeson 2, I feel like they'll be more natural and in character.

I ended up accidently binging the whole 8 episodes, I'd planned on trying to do 1 a day. My reaction throughout the entire season was humming and hawing because whilst they gave a faithful, if rather altered in places, adaption of the original story, there was always something missing that I couldn't put my finger on until I saw some reviews abs comments. It lacked the heart of the original, and I genuinely hope that they address that in season 2 because overall, the castings are more or less perfect apart from some of the chemistry not quite hitting the mark at times, it's just some of the direction and delivery that needs work tightening up and maybe the score could use some tweaking to provide an even better live action adaption than what we have. Having said that, it's already miles better than the 2010 monstrosity.
In regards to the episode itself, I actually didn't miss Sokka's sexism and actually found it jarring and a little out of place in the original, given how the women must have had to take on "men's" roles within the village given that the village was small and after the men had gone to war leaving only the women and children, making Sokka the closest thing to an adult male in those final years before he and Katara found Aang. I liked how the tribes felt different, whilst in the original the North felt too much like a carbon copy of the South except mostly untouched by the war due to the South being much closer to the Fire Nation border than the North is. A lot of the dialogue felt stiff, forced even and tonally could have done with being more natural.
I agree that the monologues at the beginning could and should have been switched. For me, like the season overall, the first episode was a bit of a diamond in the rough.

I’ve loved the bending scenes, and yes the cruel parts where a knock off but they truly put us in the mind set of how powerful the benders are and how dangerous they can be.
The only thing I really displike the most is the CGI part of the weird intro in the first episode. That was unexpectedly ugly and disappointing 😗

The new live-action show hurts to watch due to significant changes in the storyline. Although the script is written well, there is not enough emotion displayed through their tones and actions that are taking place in the live-action would never happen in the original.

Netflix is a joke there's no difference between the normal fire bending and power of the comet

Not sure I would agree with that, yes sure there's not a MASSIVE change with how much bigger the fire is but you can definitely feel the power of which the fire benders have when they decimate everything in their path

It’s all downhill after this episode.
This show doesn’t have shit on the original. Some of the castings are fantastic, and others are HUGELY miscast. We got discount Katara instead of a girl who knows how to act. We got characters that were teased at the end of season 1 or even introduced in season 2, that are introduced almost straight away in this first season… Azula in episode 3?? The fuck!? 🤦🏻‍♂️ They couldn’t even wait and just had to show firelord Ozai in episode 3 as well?? Instead of teasing him and building towards his reveal at the end of the season….That’s what was great about the og cartoon, they built him up and teased him in the background, but here there is no buildup or anticipation. It’s just bam there he is, right next to Walmart Azula. What she gonna do, foodbend her way to victory? 🤦🏻‍♂️ That actress does not embody the character at all, looks nothing like her and acts nothing like her, I bet a cosplayer could deliver better acting… terrible miscast. Don’t even get me started on Ty Lee and Mai… oh god what is that actress doing playing Mai? 😩 The three of them couldn’t act their way out of a paper bag, and they look THE LEAST like their animated counterparts. Why bring them in a whole season early anyway? Rather than take the time to cast those characters properly. It’s crazy how people will acknowledge the excellent casting of Aang, Zuko and Sokka, but won’t acknowledge the horrible miscasts of some of the female actresses. 🤦🏻‍♂️
Even commander Zhao sucks ass, has no intimidation AT ALL. He feels like he belongs in the live action movie. 🤣 Iroh looks the part, but unfortunately does not act the part. Honestly they’ve changed things that did not need to be changed, and have NOT improved the story by doing so. Aang meeting Kyoshi before Roku? Why? Downgrading part of what made the OG story work so well. This is the kind of crap I’d expect from the Disney channel. Sorry but I wont be watching season 2, which hopefully it doesn’t get the green light for anyway.

LOOOOOOVED THE INTRO !!!! Made me CRY 🥹 IMMEDIATELY 😍😍😍 So I guess we all can be smart of what they should have done differently, but I would not go as far as calling it better ! What is better for you, is might be worst for me, or others ! This team got payed 15 mill / episode, I am sure they found the team that knows what they are doing 😉
