When I coached High School Softball, I told my players "I don't condone bragging, or any other unsportsmanlike taunting's. You as an individual do any of it, you will not play at the next game. You as a team do any of it, we forfeit the game whether we are ahead or not. I do not want to see any disrespect of any kind towards the other team. We are all here to have fun and play as a team, and as a community." And I also told them that even though the other team may do it towards us, we don't let it affect us in any way shape or form. Yes we are in a competitive sport, but it doesn't mean we can disrespect people cause of an achievement. If we give a little encouragement towards their players showing frustration due to say a strike out, we are showing sportsmanship and support. If they have a player that got injured, help them to their dugout if they are coming off the field. Even if a player took a spill, or slid at a base and is having a little trouble getting up, lend a hand to get up. If they refuse, at least you offered it. We aren't being soft, we are being sports about it and showing sportsmanship. There was only 1 game I had where the girls forgot my rules about disrespect and taunting. We won the game 10-1. But even though the game was over, I went to the ref and told them we forfeit the game and are taking a loss. Ref asked me why, I told them my reason and rule. They understood and respected my wish. Opposing team didn't want to take the win after learning what had happened and took a forfeit as well. Their coach knew what I was doing when they learned about the forfeit. They followed in my steps and did the same out of respect. Their team were clueless on why it happened. Reason I know this is cause after my team gathered by our dugout, I walked over to theirs away from my team and apologized for the teams actions. A few players asked why we forfeited, I told them my rules that I have for my team. Their coach spoke up right after and said that because of my sportsmanship actions as a coach and trying to keep the respect in the sport at its highest, they too felt that they should forfeit and keep it as a tie of sorts so no one team of this game has a win. The players understood and thanked me for not only the apology, but also for the teaching of sportsmanship. I already know that after saying all this, most of you die hard braggers will come on here and blast me with a bunch of "Your Soft!!!" insults...bring it. It wont bother me at all. I'd rather see proper sportsmanship in the game of sports, instead of total upright disrespect such as these clips here and many others. I still have players I coached tell me about the way they learned about my teachings of sportsmanship, and using it in real life applications at their workplace, as well as in the community.
