      I felt the exact same and yeah I agree too! It's a shame FIFA doesn't have more variety in tactics to be more precise cause I'd love having the ability to make your own tactics that aren't just ones you have to pick from. If like been able to make my own unique ones that nobody has used before or thought of

    In 1980, I was coaching a U15 team. At that time, many here in the US were still learning the rudiments of the game. We were using the 4-3-3 but didn't really know it, as the fourth defender was the 'sweeper'.... remember those?
    We languished midtable for several years until, after much thought, I put my best player at center half, changed the midfield to a triangle with the center up and the others back (as shown in the video), and changed the name of the center half to 'forward sweeper'. I encouraged the forward sweeper to 'underlap' the outside forwards when appropriate while keeping his defensive responsibilities in mind.
    We destroyed nearly everyone we played over the next three years, with average skilled players on the pitch.

      nicely done.. I did some boys coaching and although we scored plenty I never really built a strong defensive counter. Those boys had plenty of skill and heart sadly washout a defense I let them down.

    This is the single most useful tactics channel I know. I've been following Tifo forever, but they rarely get to the nuts-and-bolts of specific formations they way you do. I'll be coming here often.

    I am a U18 coach using the 4-3-3 now. I played this in high-school back in the 80s and loved it. The 4-3-3 is very solid and simple for beginners with the many wonderful potentials explained terrifically in this video-thanks!

    I guess the natural next step is the 4-4-2. People call it outdated these days, but there's a simplistic beauty that can't be matched by anything else.

      I’m not a huge fan of the 4-4-2. I lite to have lots of mids and 2 strikers sort of hinders that. I prefer the 4-5-1 (or 4-3-3 however you look at it) or the 3-6-1 (or 3-4-3). In a fifa manager mode I though of a 2-7-1. That’s the type of person I am.

    great talk. I have played a 4-2-3-1 and is very similar to the 4-3-3 . When you attack from a 4-2-3-1 in theory you would become a 4-3-3. Only different is when saying it as a 4-2-3-1 the wingers understand they have to go back and defend where as a 4-3-3 they might think they can stay up front. when choosing a formation you have to play to the strength of your players and not forcing them into doing that they are not good at.

      Personally had a bit of an opposite problem with the 4231, where the attacking and defensive mids would both stay too "literal" to their named roles and leave a big gab between them, both ruining our build up and leaving us with vulnerable spaces in opposite possession...
      Meanwhile it then worked much better as a set 433, as the three centre mids were much more focused on their roles as actual "midfielders" and the attacking wings knowing they also needed to support the perimeter defense whenever the opponent attacked on their side.. As another benefit, in the 433 the CF/"9" was supported better in our attack than it was playing as a 4231...
      Strange enough, as they are fairly similar systems, but I guess it ultimately always comes down to the individual players and their understanding/interpretation of the roles that they're given 🤷🏻‍♂️

    This video is absolutely stellar. I usually know the basic ideas of a formation but struggle to properly articulate it whenever I'm talking. Not only that, but the USMNT, the national team I follow, employs this formation with the absence of a creator, and it always feels like a struggle to make chances in open play. Because of this, a lot of people are calling for Musah or Reyna to start in that position instead of on the wing, but we've yet to see Gregg Berhalter do anything of the sort.
    You also made note of the biggest weakness of the USMNT this year - our transition from offense to defense is usually slow and dangerously so.

    My academy has been trying to teach these principles to the players for a year with little to no results but you've explained then perfectly in under 15 minutes. I honestly wish we sometimes had strictly tactical training, as all weaknesses and setbacks you explained are what's keeping us from finishing top of the league. (we often finish 3rd or 4th due to individual games where we concede too many goals.)

    Me and my team just won our first match of the season using the 433 formation. We thought we performed better with the 442 formation but nothing could be further from the truth. We were explicitly told to keep the midfielders close to each other, and it worked wonders.

    Great video. I have used this for years with my high school and club team to score a high number of goals each season. We are utilizing It now with my Girls premier U18 team. We scored 12 goals in our first 3 matches and only had 4 against. The team that score more than the other guys always wins!

    Good video. I have to say I was a fan of the 3-5-2 formation, for its flexibility and fluidity, you have to look at balance and as I like to have that and wingers, thjis seems to win the day.Not withstanding that England, to add to the list of teams you mention won a worldcup with this 4 3 3, it kind of speaks for itself.     look 433 is really a challenge,but if u have a great synchronization in ur team it is the way for simple and beautiful football. i really adore this playstyle

    This formation is so good because teams like Liverpool,man city,barcelona pins the enemy in thier half own half while they pass around,from what I have seen this formation also guarantees at least 60 percent possession for big teams,sometimes Liverpool will get a ridiculous 75plus percent possesion unless if both big teams face each other the possession will likely be shared

    Both as a player (when I played, select traveling team, middle school team, HS Varsity and in College) and later on as a coach - my favorite formation is/was a straight/flat 4-3-3 or attacking 4-3-3 with the left and right midfielders playing out wide. The defenders would cover from our goal to just a little over the midfield line, the outside mid would cover from our 18 to their 18 (except for the center mid who cover from our goal line to just over their 18, the offensive wingers would cover from just inside our half to their goal line and the striker would cover from just within our half to their goal line. I started out as the starting goalie and then later on I moved to a field player and was usually the starting center mid and at times (on my select team) the starting striker; unless the other team had all-star player (such as when I played against former American National and WC team captain Team Ramos (in a u-19 tournament) - then I'd be the starting center mid, mark him and shut him down.
    The 4-3-3 is also most balanced, yet attacking formation and the best formation for either "long ball" or a combination of "short ball" and "long ball". The key to the 4-3-3 working is the center-mid (which is like the QB in American football) he/she controls the midfield, the game and the pace - if you don't have a quality center mid; then your best to play a 4-4-2 or a 3-5-2. In brief.

    having seen mourinho's 4-3-3 while at chelsea, it is valid to say that the goalkeeper doesn;t have to be good at feet to play in a 4-3-3. Petr Cech was awful with the ball at his feet.
    Also in defending phase, the typical weakness of this formation is on the wings but not as you said. Cause of the use of wingers it has more space between the full backs and the wingers. Even for a counter attacking team which doesn't let the full backs roam forward. That's why the Inside forward role was created, fulfilled in a great extend by Thierry Henry.
    I think your analysis is more what you like when you see a 4-3-3, and not a tactic explanation. An example of what i;m trying to say given from your mistake assuming that Ajax of 95 played with a 4-3-3.They used 3-4-3 with a diamond in the middle. Cause of a loss in width support, the 3-4-3 of ajax needed to have more physical presences in the MC positions. Fortunately for them it was Edgar Davids and Clarence Seedorf who covered these positions. This is a natural weakness, in every way someone who playes a 3-4-3 with a diamond, will have to deal.
    The biggest advantage of 4-3-3, as said by cruyff, is that its the only system that can allow a team to have high technical ability from bottom to top and from right to left. That happens because of the defensive cover every player gets. There is no MC who has to defend the opposition winger like edgad davids did against Milan, in the whole game, in the 1994 final. To do that you have to hit the gym a lot and its very rare to see great physique with great technical ability combined in a player. It's just common sense that one thing gets from the other.

    For me, another key point in attack for this system is the attacking mids movement in the final third. Attacking mids can make runs in behind the opponent's backline between the center back and full backs (see Gundogan's movement). When wingers come inside, the attacking mids should also be able to make runs into the space that they vacate (high and wide).

    I would like to add that the 4-3-3 became highly in fashing as a counter to the, back in the day mostly played, 4-4-2. Most famously, Jose Mourinho used it to counter the 4-4-2 dominant Premier League back in the day. As a counter for the 4-3-3 the 4-2-3-1 became fashion, and still is the most prominant tactic to date. But, today you have a bunch of tactics all over the place, and the counter for the 4-2-3-1 is the mirroring 4-3-2-1. Some years ago (2014) just everybody played the 4-2-3-1 because the 4-3-3 lacks a bit of defensive stability while the 4-2-3-1 is the most balanced tactic there is.
    My favorite variation of the 4-3-3 is that of AC Milan in 2005 or so where Pirlo played in the middle as the deep lying playmaker (like a quaterback, create) and Gattuso was protecting him (defend), while Seedorf put in all his stamina and work rate to cover the pitch.
    Also Pep Guardiolas 4-3-3 has become super weird, they are more a 1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1 now. Numbers don't matter no more.
    PS. I like that the 4-4-2 Diamond is having a bit of a renaissance lately

    When playing FIFA i have observed the 4-4-2 as the most stable formation both offensively and defensively. 4-3-3 without the right players can stretch the midfied. Leaving it exposed.

      Mou exposed 442 formation in 04/05
      The midfield is dominated by the 3 v 2

    Interesting, I've been playing MLS league in FIFA 22 and my local team uses this form the most. My player in the Attacking mid right pos would start out really strong and help obtain a lead as I made him very fast. But on legend diff towards the end of the game when I've lost stamina or if I committed my player to far forward they would pick apart my back line and lead to high scoring games. Cool stuff!
